I have just received a request (paying request!) to make a quilt. There is no pattern available and am trying to make one from a pic. I have drawn up the pattern, figured the measurements 3 times....seriously taxing my brain.....and come up with the necessary yardage. I want to make a test block. Have you ever tried to copy a pic with no pattern? What tips can you give me?

Yep I have, I finally bought Eq6.

I use grid paper. Try to draw the picture over the squares. Marked the squares into a block. Hope that makes sense to you. What is the picture? Gook Luck. Keep us posted. BrendaK

Sorry, but that was very, very funny. Double check your math. And then check it again. |
Use graph paper
|
EQ...it is the ONLY way to go! Also make sure you are not trying to reproduce a pattern that has a copyright!

I use Microsoft Excel. I format the rows to be a row height of 14.5 and column width 2. This way I can fill in the squares with color but easily move them around if and when needed. I also type the scale above the cells to easily calculate blocks or pieces needed to make a certain width.

Draw it out on graph paper. I normally use 1/4" graph paper. If the block is small enough, I make it true to size. Otherwise, I let 1 square = 1/2" to go half size. Once you've got the block drawn out correctly, identify your pieces and group same fabric pieces together. Figure out the finished size of each piece, then add your seam allowance into the measurements. Test it in scrap material first before using the good stuff.

yes, i have duplicated many patterns from pictures. i usually bring up my EQ5 and play. i just love my eq
|
I do this all the time. I will spend hours in EQ playing with a pattern that I just put in there from a picture. So easy to change size, color, boarders, etc. These then go on my "want to make someday" list ;)

Sorry, but that was very, very funny. Double check your math. And then check it again. As suggested graph paper will be your friend ... and don't forget about the seam allowances. And also, if you're doing HSTs that it takes extra yardage if you're making them using squares and then cutting in half. Think it thru as to everything you'll need, including border and binding. And then when you go to buy your fabric ... buy extra!! If not needed, you can add it to your stashes .... or have extra when you change your mind and decide to make it differently or add an extra border, etc! |
Use graph paper or spreadsheet in Open Office. I also use Gimp for coloring.
I can't have EQ on my computer so I had to find alternate ways and it's all free. :-D Here's a good tutorial on Gimp if you're interested. http://www.quiltingboard.com/t-141145-1.htm |

I just finished making a test block with scraps. I think it turned out ok, and actually ended up with the size I wanted!   Not too bad for my first log cabin block, ever! And I have a call in to the maker of the copied quilt to get permission.
15 inch test block |
I might be a bit easier to do it with half square triangles if you want the look without the log cabin squares.
That way it would be an inspiration rather than a direct copy...and much easier to draw out on graph paper! |

Thanks The current version is 7 (but even v5 is still very useful with a ton of features). http://electricquilt.com/ |
Are you going to make just ONE humongous "O" with the buckeye leaves and burrs? I'm trying to picture it in queen size and, gee, I
WOULDN'T do it. Perhaps I am not understanding the concept. (And you could do better buckeye leaves.) Anyway there are several OSU quilts on that post, do they want the first one? |

If you don't have EQ then maybe you have a friend who does. Even have done the outline formats for quilts that were retreat quilts so the ladies could check out where which color went before cutting and all.
I've done several for friends and we all ahd fun with it. ali |
