Fon's and Porter has a ruler now too that you can use. You just draw on both sides and then sew on the lines and cut down the middle when done. Same concept, different tool.

Do they tear easy when you make your own or do you use tissue paper?

I have that tool. I only drew the center line though, and I would use that to get my 1/4".

First of all - Kim, that quilt is awesome. What pattern is that?

I just used thangles for the first time. They were great to work with and I don't think I could have done these without the thangles. I recently read about sewing the outside of a square and then cutting into triangles and will definitely try that on larger half square triangles.

If you use this method be sure to starch your fabric like crazy, because you end up with 4 bias edges on the finished blocks. Or I suppose you could cut your original square on the bias and after cutting the edges would be on grain.

I have made them. It is so much easier, and as said before, it is an exact cut. I enjoyed making that quilt, I made another one!
