than to come home from the fabric store and fold my new fabric. I went to JoAnn's to get some batting and bought a bunch of black/white fabric for a distant project. I'm sure I'm not alone in my fondness of playing with fabric.
|
I do that too, as soon as I can I will take my fabrics out of the bag, fold them nice and neat and admire them.
|
I like to just keep rearranging my fabric and refolding it....don't get new fabric that often. but first of the month is getting closer...I am going to buy a yo yo maker...ya!!
|
Feeling fabric is very therapeutic. When my quilting friend comes to visit if she is in a foul mood she will sort and put away my fabric and will even iron pieces.
|
Last week 2 friends and I took a RoadTrip to 3 (new to us) quilt shops. I do not want to see my Discover Card bill!! We had so much fun but I agree-the best part is coming home and folding and feeling and loving that new fabric.
|
I don't have to buy it...I go around feeling it for nothing!! :D
|
LOL...DH teases me all the time about just looking at the candy.
I bring home fabric..and I take it out of the bag..refold it..run my hands over it. Then..I take out a plastic container to store it in...It has to be in that box just so. I put the lid on it..then take it back off and admire it some more. |
I do that too. But I usually let it sit on my cutting table for a day or two so I can look at it and admire it. Then I decide just the right place to put it, with reds? or florals? or fusions? etc. The other day my 9 year old GD offered to help me sort my fabric and put it all away. Sounds like she is getting the bug too.

Love playing with fabric! It got me in trouble while working at the fabric store. Bad move since I rarely came home with a paycheck! Lol
|
LOL..the manager of the local Joann's asked me to come to work part time. I came home and told my husband..and he didn't like that idea at all. He said it would cost him money for me to work...LOL I love staying home anyway.
Peace and Blessings |

I love to feel fabric. If I've had a bad day I go to the fabric store and just touch the fabrics. My favorite day at the store was when I had brought DGD with me. She walked by some fabric and suddenly turned and went back to it. She just kept petting it and had a wonderful dreamy look on her face. She called me over to feel it too. Needless to say I bought her some of it. She has the fabric bug too.

Going fabric shopping is like shopping in a candy store. It's all eye candy to me and no calories
|
I bring all new fabric home, wash and dry it, fold with my ruler and put it into my big fabric cabinet. After that is all done, I usually buy quite a few yards at a time, then I stand and just look at all I have.
|
ayya!! I see Im not alone!!! my DH says,, why are you playing with it,, I said because it is so prety, he just smiles and shakes his head,, lol...

Little boys collect matchbox cars, girls collect "little pony" or dolls... for some of us, fabric fills the exact same place. We shouldn't be surprised; there's still a child in each of us...

...I LOVE to PET the fabric...used to call my friend and ask if she wanted to go pet fabric...LOL!
Absolutely!! Petting fabric is a wonderful stress reliever. Ruth |
Just came from Joann's. I have had a miserable week and needed to get away from the phone and life in general. So I went to the store; only bought yarn for dish cloths, but looked at the fabric and just let my mind wander up and down the aisles. I feel better already.
|
I love to shop for fabric, get home and show it to my husband, it will stay in the bag until I have somewhere to put it. I have a lot of fabric all over the house but not much storage. Love to look at what I have and feel it! :XD:
|
I know what you mean. Some days I just sit and pet my fabric and let me mind wander or maybe meditate would be a better word. The cats like to hang out in the fabric closet with me, they nest and fall asleep. It is so relaxing, but my husband thinks it is so odd. I compare it to his doing puzzles.
|
OooOOooo yes! Isn't it fun to look over it all again and then to decide to wash it and iron it and put it away or using it right after! I don't have ton's of material, but I can say I just love buying when I can.

At least I'm not alone! My DH couldn't understand why when we moved back to the States I HAD to pack my entire quilting room-every scrap! He thought I was nuts to pay all the shipping/excess baggage to get it overseas in the first place, then pay shipping to get it all back! He just laughs when I told him so incrediously, "but it's my STASH!! Of course I have to take it with me!!" I LOVE fabric-the smell, feel, colors-next to chocolate, nothing these days excites me as much! LOL
this is an early photo of my stash before I ran out of space in my shoe/sweater organizers. |
Know what you mean.
My DS just e-mailed me she found a new fabric shop (to her) in CT near her and says it is 5-6 times the size of ours here. I feel a road trip coming on before school starts.. |
I bought fabric for a project, last weekend. Haven't taken it out of the bag, yet! I just keep looking at that bag. By the time I take it out, it will be like looking at it for the first time! The anticipation gives me goosebumps!

Grann6, please tell me about your dishclothes.

Fabric has always held a tactile pleasure for me ever since I was 9 or 10 and wanted to start sewing. In my early adulthood I was a dressmaker with the privilege of sewing for a high end fabric store with cashmere and silk and swiss cotton. A fine 100% cotton fabric is like heaven!! Fold, stroke, wonderful!
|
Yep! I'm a fabrifolic too. When I get home from fabric shopping I sew up the ends of the fabric, wash and press, enjoying and admiring the fabric.
Fold and store.  |
I love to feel it, sort it, look at, fold it. My family thinks I need therapy. That is my therapy!
|
Hi Joyce, I used to live in Midland many years ago while my husband installed a computer at Dow Chemical. I use cotton yarn and knit two styles after trying many patterns that stretched out and got misshapen. My favorite is started at one corner with 3 stitches. Next row knit 2sts, yarn over, knit last st. Next row, knit 2 sts, yo and continue on this way till you have 60 sts on your needle, then start decreasing this way. Knit 1 st, knit 2 tog, yo, knit 2 tog. Keep doing this till you have 5 sts left. Then knit 1, slip 1, knit 2 tog, pass the slipped st over the stitch you just knit tog, knit last st. Now you have 3 sts. Knit them once, then knit all 3 together and you're done. It takes me about 4 hours to knit one.
|
I have made about 40 so far. I give them as gifts. My kids love them. Even my single son took one. Whenever we have a family get-together I take a basketful and let people help themselves.
|
Thank you Grann,
That is a pattern I can adapt to a knitting machine. I usually use what is called a tuck stitch on the machine. These are also great face-cloths as well as dish cloths. Do you crochet or knit toppers for hand towels? |
Hey Joyce. I used to knit them on the knitting machine too. My daughter loved them, but started having trouble finding cotton yarn for the knitting machine, mine is mid gauge and hand knitting yarn makes them too stiff. I do them while watching TV, especially during my NASCAR races. No, I don't do the towel toppers. I do make big ones to use as dish towels. I keep one on my counter to set my dishes on after washing them. I love them for babies faces too. I put my knitting machine away, because it was taking away from sewing. And all I seemed to be doing was making swatches. I will get it back out in the winter, maybe.

I can assure you - you are not alone. As soon as I get home with new fabric, I wash, starch, press & fold it. Then sometimes I just sit, admire & pet it for a while. I used to think my sister was crazy when she talked about "fondling her fabric".
Now I understand! |
Do you think fabric can get "worn out" from touching it too much?
|
I apologise! It just hit me that I hi-jacked this thread.
I'm so sorry. |
I really am a quilter, but I'm beginning to think that I just collect fabric. Love adding to my stash
|
Hi I just bought one last month & I have a circle maker so my circles are perfect and it is easy to use . Making the yo-yo are easy & fast. happy going around in circles.. Shirley
|
Yea,, I guess we all love our fabric, ood or new.
