I received the McCall's Mar/Apr 2010 magazine today and read that the iPhones have "apps designed especially for quilters, including several free ones. You can use your phone to figure yardage on the run, check out photos of antique quilts, or dive into entire block libraries". Anyone with an iPhone or thinking about getting one this app might be great tool! I personally don't have one but now I want one :)

amma 01-28-2010 06:11 PM

How awesome is this!!! :D:D:D

Stitchnripper 01-28-2010 06:13 PM

I have an iPhone (love, love, love it) and have two free quilting apps. One called Quilt Fab and one called Quilt Ref. Haven't used them yet, but, play with them now and then.

pam1966 01-28-2010 06:39 PM

I have Quilt Fab on my iPod touch, have to check those others out!

craftybear 01-28-2010 06:43 PM

Wow, that is interesting! Can you store list of your quilt books on it also?

deedum 01-28-2010 06:43 PM

Love my iphone, now I am gonna check those apps out! Thanks for the info.

hehe- got my apps

skyle1968 01-28-2010 08:26 PM

I also have an Iphone & have QuiltFab & QuiltRef too.

deedum 01-28-2010 08:28 PM

I downloaded one called "Anne Smith quilting stash" podcast, anyone tried that?

nursie76 01-28-2010 08:29 PM

I just got my issue today and was excited to read that. I have an I phone and am definitely going to check it out.

BellaBoo 01-29-2010 07:01 AM

I have the ITouch, does the same as IPhone only no phone. I like my old Nokia open face cell phone, (the battery still lasts for two weeks and I have four bars everywhere). I have the C&T Publishing app and it's great. I'll have to get these others!

BellaBoo 01-29-2010 07:13 AM

Got em! That was fast. I was surprised they were free! Here is the website to read about the apps.

The C&T Publishing app is Quick and Easy Quilt Block Tool. I use it a lot.

laadw 01-29-2010 10:15 AM

I used the quilt fab app all the time and even wrote about it on my blog. It is free and really works.

Now I want one too.

I'm glad you like my apps, QuiltFab and QuiltRef. It's been fun creating them. Let me know if there are features you'd like to see. I have another app in the works that has some fun eye candy to play around with. Since I've retired as a programmer, apps and quilting keep me off the streets!

Just downloaded both! Thanks! Glad you are creatively occupied and not on the street! ;-)

Thanks for the info! I'm going to do some research. If the apps work with the iTouch then I may get that instead. I can't text with the iphone, my fingers are a little big

Try using a pencil eraser instead of your fingers.

Jingle 01-29-2010 08:28 PM

22 yr. old Granddaughter has an IPhone, doubt she would be interested in that app, she has no interest in quilting. I hope when she gets older she will, hard telling what they may have by then.

littlehud 01-29-2010 09:32 PM

OMG there is an app for everything.

mpodlecki 01-30-2010 04:13 AM

Yes, they work on the iTouch (a.k.a. iPod touch). They will also work on the new Apple iPad that will be coming out in a couple of months. It's bigger (9.7" screen), so the onscreen keyboard is bigger too!

coconuts 01-30-2010 07:14 AM

Does it work on the I-Pod?

QuiltFab and QuiltRef work on the iPod touch (which is similar to the iPhone, but without the phone part), but not any of the other iPods -- there's no way to download apps onto the others.

coconuts 01-30-2010 08:54 AM

I have the I-Pod touch. Thanks for the information.

Sorry, but a pencil eraser doesn't work. These devices use a "capacitive material", which means it monitors changes in electrical current. Some people even have skin that is too dry to make it work very well! But you can buy an iPhone stylus, or make one with half a snap fastener, some dental floss, and an old metal ballpoint pen! If you'd like to try making one, here is a video:

http://lifehacker.com/5277112/make-a...greasy-fingers

Tip: be sure it's a metal pen and a medium size snap -- these techie guys don't understand snaps!

I have the Verizon Droid, and am still learning how to use it, but I can't find those applications anywhere. Can anyone help me with that?

Sorry, but each type of device (or manufacturer) have their own "store" and set of apps. The apps mentioned earlier are only on Apple devices. I'm not aware of any quilting apps on the Droid (it's still pretty new). But my sister, who's an avid quilter, has one, and I'll ask her when she comes back from her retreat week-end. She uses the Droid as a cellphone, and the iPod touch for other things -- like quilting apps! (She also has a lot of other toys like a Kindle, an embroidery machine, and a long-arm quilting machine!)

BellaBoo 01-30-2010 01:57 PM

I would love love love a simple quilt design app!

That's an interesting idea! These quilting apps don't handle your quilting library, but it set me wondering about that. I use librarything on the web to keep track of my roughly 200 quilting books.

It's a really nifty setup. And since you can surf the web from the iphone or the iPod touch (or the Verizon Droid), that would work, but it isn't really set up for the small screen size. I'll ask my sister, the librarian and iPod touch (and Droid) user -- and quilter -- what she would recommend. There must be an app for that!

quiltswithdogs 01-30-2010 02:00 PM

I don't have an iPhone or iPod but if I ever do, I'm getting those quilt apps.... amazing!

I'm really a slow learner of technology, but when I'm reeeeealy interested and have a patient teacher, I can eventually get the basics. My immediate goal is how to deal with photos from camera-computer-sharing with people. By the time I can get and learn the iPhone, there'll be something newer and more complicated. I can't keep up!

I have an iPhone. It is so easy to take a picture and email it to someone right on the spot. No having to deal with downloading pictures, putting them somewhere on your PC, naming them (if you do that), then remembering to email them to someone. I love my iPhone for picture sharing! I downloaded the QuiltFab app a while ago but have not used it yet. So glad that an iPhone quilt app developer is a member here!

deedum 01-30-2010 06:04 PM

Agree, I have the iphone and love it! The apps are so cool, and love QuiltFab.

Thank you! I am going to download them on my Iphone, too!

Will they work on a Blackberry? Just got a new phone after 10 years so all this new technology is new to me (and confusing).

mpodlecki 05-31-2010 03:03 PM

I'm sorry, but every device maker has their own language for apps, and these quilting apps of mine only work on Apple mobile devices. But Blackberries may have some quilting apps in their store. Let me know if you find any!

Maggie_Sue 05-31-2010 06:27 PM

Isn't it interesting that phones now have apps for quilters, but we cannot keep fabric locally??? Techies are in the know!!!

bookworm 05-31-2010 06:29 PM

Oh wow that's cool. I'm going to have to take a look.

craftybear 05-31-2010 06:34 PM

awesome

rainagade 11-05-2011 08:04 AM

I love the quilting apps. I put them on my IPad, take it along.

Apps I use:

Free apps:
Quilting Calculator <--- how much do I need for this project
Quilt Shops <--- ever wonder if an QS are around?
Block FAb <--- enter block size, get yardage

Paid App:
Fabric Stash <--- oh wow, enter fabrics, pictures too, enter project, select fabrics.....i love it but i will never get all my stash in this, so I am starting with the new stuff.

Embroidery apps: Both are free apps.
Papff Embroidery
Huskyvarna/Viking

then there is grocery shopping, I have gone paperless. Helps reminds you if there are coupons out there. Its a free app too.

Grocery IQ

Have fun

DebraK 11-05-2011 09:03 AM

I don't know how I ever did without my grocery app. I never forget my list anymore. I have an app right next to it comparing nutrition information just by scanning the barcodes. Love it!

As for quilting, I mostly just hunt for quilt shops and take pictures.
