I basicly just use my mat lines and use my olfa ruler for actual measuring

And a word to the wise....Use the SAME rulers throughout the making of a quilt. I had a terrible problem when I accidently picked up the wrong ruler when cutting strips for a project. Finally noticed that the strips cut with the second ruler were ever so slightly smaller...AAARRRGGGHHH.

Good to hear that your DH and your Mom are doing better and that you are getting a chance to enjoy your sewing once more!!
I hope you didn't cut any fabric that you were extremely fond of when you were using the 'bad' mat!! Thanks for the info!!

I agree with Kayluvs about using different rulers - I try to use the same ones for the whole project too.

For many, many years I've seen that Olfa brand replacement blades, cutting mats, some scissors, and a few other tools, were rarely "perfect", always appeared to be seconds or damaged when I had bought them or seen them come to classes with my students. I

learned to order mine from Hancocks of Paducah in bulk for students before I had a shop. I never had problems when I ordered this way. (Hancocks of Paducah is NOT the same as Hancocks Fabric Stores - it's independently owned.) And they were quick to replace anything that wasn't right -- such as one cutting mat that arrived in Texas warped during the summer's heat.

I'm still leery of products from Joanne's (no Hancocks in my area), though I've seen that some of their fabrics are up to LQS levels now....and so are the prices!

That's my story and I'm sticking to it.

You would think it wouldn't be that hard to mark a cutting mat correctly! Sorry you had this problem.

Sorry about that.

However, I wouldn't ever suggest someone use the measurements on any cutting mat . That's what our rulers are for. The lines on the mat are great for lining up the material before cutting or squaring up.

I was reading a book last night. "Best Tips for Quilters" It said do not use the mat for cutting. It is almost always off.
I knew it already and it was not fun learning.
