I was taught to never use the mat to measure.......that's why we have rulers. I only use my mat to square up my fabric and I've used the angle lines when tube quilting or cutting other angles.

Same here, when I first started quilting, not to use the cutting mat for measuring was a rule printed in all the quilt magazines. Not many will print that now, most have the brands pay for advertising. June Taylor mats have always been accurate in mat measurements. It's a hard mat so easier to be accurate from what I have read.

I have heard that rulers are often off, too. One teacher said they might be off less than 1/8 of an inch. She said when you start with one ruler, try to use the same ruler all the way through your cutting, so at least you are off all the way through the pieces.

Be warned, June Tailor rulers don't agree with most other rulers either.

I always have checked my different rulers & mats with a metal tape measure...guess I've been lucky...have only had one ruler be off 1/16" at the start..after the 1"...all was exact. I do use my mats to measure...but like I said, I check them first. I haven't really had any problems at all. I think it's the manufacturing process...and the larger the mat/ruler, the more likely for there to be a slight difference in that first inch measurement.

Mats are not for measuring,that`s what rulers are made for.After reading this I measured 2 different brands of mats that I have and both were off.1 by 1/2 inch and 1 by 1/4 inch.So for correct measurment use your rulers.

I just an OLFA from Hancocks two weeks ago. Just ran in to check mine and it measures true. Thankfully!

I don't think you should blame Hancocks unless you tell them about it and they still keep carrying the same brand. They should give you a new one or your money back. If you get a new one just check it out before you take it home. You shouldn't have to do that but the reality is that you can't trust anything anymore.joogoo
