Thread nippers?
 

I have some thread nippers (I guess that's what they're called... it's what I call them... LOL!) that are as dull as watching paint dry. They are just cheapies that I got years ago... I think they were a give-away at the LQS or else were just super cheap. They aren't a name brand or anything. But I really like using them to cut my thread. Who out there also uses nippers & what kind do you have? I really need to buy some new, decent ones. Any help would be much-o appreciated!

I have a cheapy pair too! I think I got it at Walmart and it was packaged with maybe a tape measure and a seam ripper. I know I didn't pay a lot for it. Under 3 dollars. . .

I have several cheapies...but love my fiskars best from JoAnns...also have a new package here from Hobby Lobby that has a sewing guide, seam ripper and nippers made by SEW-OLOGY..price on it is $1.99

I previously had some cheap nippers from Walmart. What a pain. You couldn't nip with the tip, and you had to hold them just so to get it to cut thread consistently. I wanted to throw them across the room since they were darn near worthless to me.. Bring on the Gingher.

I love the Gingher brand nippers the absolute best - but they don't leave my chair-side table.

I bought several pair of nippers from Nancy Zieman's catalog. I love those little tools. So handy and super sharp.

I also bought mine in a sewing pack from Walmart. Did you try sharping your by curing into a fine grade sandpaper? It is an old tip for scissors, but it is worth a try

Manicure scissors with the curved edge. Work great. I even will use them in place of seam rippers.

I just use a small pair of Fiskars. Have had them for years (read decades). Use them for my hand quilting and needlepoint/embroidery threads. Have another pair of no-names upstairs in the sewing room. Also have several other pairs of larger scissors in the sewing room. I grab what's handy.

My wife loves her Gingher stork embroidery scissors for cutting threads, but my favorite is 88650 on this page. It probably has a lot to do with hand size, right- vs. left-handed, hand strength, etc. Thanks Ellie for the link!

I like to use them to rip, too. Of course, I like to use large, long quilting pins to rip, too (we all know I'm weird). I just can't figure out how people (like Eleanor Burns) rip with rotary cutters...

My favorite nippers are made by gold seal. They are the same kind that are used in sewing factories and last a long, long time. They can be sharpened just like any good pair of scissors, they have a ring on the side to wear while you are sewing at the machine so you never have to set them down and pick them back up to use them while working. The point is thin enough to use for small un-sewing tasks.

I got mine on ebay....50 cents a pair, but I had to buy a dozen.....should last me a while.

I recently bought the Fons & Porter snippers (on eBay) .... they are super sharp and I like the color ~ bright Red, so I can spot them easily!!

I buy $3 to $4 pairs and use them for 3-4 years and then rebuy. It is too expensive to have them sharpened.

I had my grandmother's snips that her teacher gave her when she was in high school. They were heavy and felt great in my hand. Easy to get sharpened too being quality metal. I took them to a class at my guild and left them on the ironing board. I went back to get them a few minutes later and they were gone. I immediately asked everyone to look for them for me. No one could remember who was at the ironing board or around it. No one ever returned them. I still get sad thinking a guild member took them. One day they will forget and have them at a class or workshop! I learned to leave my good notions home and take the cheap ones to classes and workshops.

My DH is nearly obsessed with sharpening things (he has stones & ceramic sticks & who knows what all kinda tools to do so) but the blades were so short, I didn't know they could be sharpened. I'll have him give it a try.

I have several Fons & Porter tools & I love the red handles... so easy to see amongst the piles!

Lots of options! I keep a pair at my machine made by Gold Seal. I've had them for about 40 years. Hadn't sewed in many years and when I started quilting a few years ago I couldn't find them. I bought a small pair of scissors, but my fingers always got caught in the holes. Finally found my Gold Seal in with a bag of old sewing notions and I love them.

As someone mentioned earlier, I take the "others" to classes and workshops as I don't mind so much if I lose them. :)

I had never used them, then I bought something else I needed, and it had a few things in pkge, I think I got it at Hancocks, and now I love them! Not sure of brand though.

Years ago, I found some of the Gingher snips on eBay for about 5 dollars a pair, I think I bought 5 pair, I have them all over the house. I love them.

has anyone tried sharpening them by cutting through aluminum foil? I`ve heard that that can work but I've never tried it.

I have a pair of curved up embroidery scissors that I use and bought them @ Jo-Ann's, love them. They are by my machine all the time now. Wish I would of had them before, loved the stork scissors until everytime I bought a pair DH would use them umm for his nose hairs and after that I never wanted them back (found him doing his thing one day, he used to put them back into my sewing kit until then) !LOL

My DH has to go to the dressing clinic whenever he has an accident (and he has a few using a stanley knife) so I grab the scissors from there, they only use them once a throw them away as they are no longer sterile. I must have had a dozen or more over the years, they are great for threads,

In addition to trying the sandpaper, I have read that cutting several layers of aluminum foil will sharpen scissors. I LOVe my Ginghers nippers. Have had for 20 years and I wear them around my neck at home--never take them away.

I use the ones that doctors use to take out stitches. They are stainless steel and they are very sharp . They throw these away after they use them . So if you know someone in the medical field, they should be able to get you some.

I have a pair of Ginghers and they are absolutely the best I've ever had. Three years of snipping and they are just as sharp as the day I got them. Can't say enough good things about them even though they are a tad pricey.

This may sound weird but the best thread snips I have found are the little scissors that you buy for cutting your toenails! They are very sharp and a compact size. I have a few pairs because you can ge them at the dollar store. They even fit in where all my machine feet go so I kow they are always handy! I have seen some decorated ones at Fabricland and such but I figure for a $1 I am not out much when they get dull!! But for the record I have been using the one pair for about a year now!!

same thing happened to me with my Martelli rotary cutter. After that I stopped going to that group.

They should be! There is a basket in our guild closet for 'not mine' items to be left there. The person wanted them and kept them.

I have used nippers for years....my cheapy one actually fell apart and now I have a Gingher one...super fine point, just love it!
