Thread question??
 

Does anyone else us Coats & Clark Dual Duty XP General Purpose thread for piecing? I just want to check so that this thread will hold up after my quilt has been washed many times. Thanks:o

Also when quilting, I am ALWAYS supposed to use the Machine quilting thread right? I am not supposed to use a general purpose thread correct? Thanks :o

I use it quite abit ... and has held up just fine. As for machine quilting, typically I use a machine quilting thread as I like the heftier weight/thinckness... but not always. When I want a less pronounced look to the quilting I use a all purpose thread.

You can use any thread your machine takes to quilt. It's up to you.

Can't help you re Coats and Clark - don't like their thread and never use it anymore. Gave away all I had from when I began quilting.

I imagine most, if not all older quilts have used this thread and they are still here.

Many years ago, Coats & Clarks was the "best" thread I could get...those quilts are still going strong. One of them was for my daughter when she was born, has been washed too many times to count, and is still in great condition after almost 40 years.

As for quilting, with all the choices we have now, I think you'll find that machine quilting or machine embroidery threads will work well for quilting and give you less trouble while you're quilting. I wouldn't use general purpose thread for FMQ with all the beautiful quilting thread available now.

Some times it is just a question of what you can afford to use. I have used everything for everything....the only one I really stay away from is Hand Quilting thread, not recommended for sewing machine use.....I have A LOT OF older thread, and am trying to use it up, "Waste not...want not"....but if I was to buy new, now that is a different question. I would only buy Superior Thread "King Tut" for machine quilting.....love the look, love the fact that it is very low lint, but it is $9 a spool....so I buy on sale when I can. I have quilted with serger thread and embroidery thread, I have used polyester thread on cotton fabric and cotton thread on polyester fabric..... sometimes the color is more important.

Oh thank you all so much! I like the Coats & Clark and I can get it on sale, I also have machine quilting thread as well, thank you all for easing my mind that I am using the right stuff!! :)

Right on Deborahlees. I frequently use serger thread for piecing and final quilting. Fabric usually wears out long before individual threads.

I do and it is a good thread. Has been for years.

I'm not that hung up on what brand I use. I go by wt and ply. I use 2 ply thread for piecing and at least 60wt or higher for my bobbin. Needle size is very important when choosing what thread you use. I bought Aurifil thread on sale and have been using it. It's 50 wt 2 ply and works great in all my machines. For quilting on a machine, weight and ply is more important then what brand. Thin will sink in the fabric, thicker thread the quilting stitches will stand out.
