Any glazed thread, or any thread that says Hand Quilting, will burn out the motor to your machine along with messing with a bunch of other stuff in the machine. It's a big NO NO!!!

My husband made a hanger for my cone thread. Put a loop in the ceiling and hung a rope with a washer at the botton. The rope can be moved to put on new thread. Works great. Almost everyone has a scrap of rope and a washer.

I think the thread is the problem. The glace has a wax coating on it and is designed for hand sewing. I was told the coating will gum up your machine.

The thread you are using is hand quilting thread from Joann's.
I use it to hand quilt my quilts... Coats and Clark is okay for machines but I really like the thread from Connecting Threads... they have cones also and a cone holder... Lots of threads out there from real expensive to ones I can afford..

I almost always buy the cone thread as it is cheaper (larger quanity for the price.) I have mine sitting in a large coffee mug, right behind the machine, and as close to the normal thread holder as possible.......havent had any problems doing it that way.

To use the cone thread - on a machine the has the spool pin standing straight up - take a straw (from a drive through -like McDonalds - soft drink) put it over the spool pin, then the cone thread. It stays on the pin/straw very nicely. Thread the machine as usual. This only works IF the spool pin holds the thread in an upright position.

You should not use coated quilting cotton in your machine. The coating will interfere with the tension discs of your machine and gunk them up. Use the coated cotton for hand quilting. It is made that way to slide easily whilst you are hand quilting. Mettler brand quilting cotton is OK to use in the machine, as it doesn't have the coating, but you have to check which Gutterman thread you are using. it is usually marked as hand or machine quilting cotton. Most brands differentiate in this way so that you don't use the wrong one.

The thread you've been using is for hand quilting only. The coating on it is bad for your machine, it'll gum up the tension disks and cause the problems you describe.
I like Gutterman cotton thread, also the Essentials cotton thread
