Here's what I do for my everyday threads. I have my embroidery threads in closed plastic drawers that I got at JAF.
I keep bobbins with matching threads.

I have two four drawer units stacked upon two wood storage drawers. It stands in the corner like a tower. I also put small sewing needs in a couple of the drawer and embroidery threads separated from the sewing threads. I have a piece of fabric hanging down on the side where the sun could fade the colors. I thought of lining the drawers inside with a paper that would not allow the sun through. But they are so full I think it would get scrunched up and be worthless. That being said, I also have a sewing desk and two of the drawers have regular thread size spools separated out by color with plastic baggies. I just lift the baggie out as needed and see which color is best.
It is convenient to have them close by and easy to grab.

I have three of these which I cover with Saran Wrap so I can see the threads and keep any dust off.. I also have two or 3thread boxes for basic colors like black, white, gray, beige

Matchbox cars containers, clear plastic, are the best for thread storage. They hold 44 plus spools of thread, and keeps thread clean and dust free.

I have two of the 6 x 10 wall peg boards for a total of 120 spools from Walmart. I live in the Delta and dust is a constant problem. I sewed a cover that pulls down over the thread. This stops the dust and also bleaching from the window and overhead florescent lights.

I use the small plastic containers for my bobbins. They hold 25 bobbins each. When I put thread on a bobbin, I put a small piece of tape on the end with the thread # so I can match it later.

4 of them hold my embroidery thread and the other two hold my sewing thread. I love them because of the extra long spool pins, I can double or even triple up my small Madeira spools on one pin, or remove a pin to store a large cone. I keep bobbins on the pins with the spool of thread they're wound from.

I use plastic fishing tackle boxes. They are clear, divided and flat and hold many spools (not cones though). Much, much cheaper than the ones sold at JAF and Hobby Lobby. I've also bought this same type of box at Harbor Freight for even less money. They were recently on sale at HF for $2.99 each. Each one has 24 compartments and one compartment holds one spool. I use smaller versions of these boxes for bobbins.

I have a narrow set of 7 drawers bought from Ikea. I store spools by color in the drawers. I keep basic colors with their bobbins in a drawer in my sewing machine cabinet. I would love to display thread on a rack for both convenience and appearance but I believe that light and dust are bad for thread.
