What thread color do you find yourself mostly using? I find myself using browns alot. Don't know why.
I just thought about it and I would have to say white, and I don't know why, either!
I use a very light gray Gutterman as it blends right into the fabric when piecing. Of course, when I top stitch then I use the color of the fabric I am using.
mostly neautrals, like cream, off white ,taupe.
if i'm using mostly whites i use white and black with black but for patchwork i use the neutrals, of course i have every color i could ever need in my stash! |
For piecing white- for applique and quilting I try to match the fabric color
I use lots of gray for piecing.....
Mostly white and creams!
A grayish green - sort of like the color that the Easter egg dyes made when they were all dumped together.
I think the name of the color (Coats & Clark) is "smoke" It blends with almost all medium to dark colors. |
I use grays for piecing mostly. I don't know why, except that it's probably what I have the most of.
I use whatever thread color I have in my use up thread basket with a 70# neutral bobbin thread. I have half used spools of thread that are just in my way.
Neutrals for piecing, usually grey or cream. For quilting it depends on whether I want the stitches to show, but they usually blend with the top.
I use any colour Bottom Line in the bobbin and usually beige or grey Aurifil on top.
For piecing-grey or taupe Aurifil 50wt or Masterpiece by Superior Threads. Whenever I have matching colors, I use it. For hand appliqué, I use YLI silk neutrals or Masterpiece to match the fabric. Connecting Threads sell a set of YLI and a bobbin donut of 36 Masterpiece colors. For quilting, I use whatever color Aurifil or King Tut or Perfect Quilter by Superior that I think will give the look I want. I still have a stash of DMC, Mettler, and C&C hand quilting thread, but new purchases will be Treasures by Superior.
I love varigated and use them whenever I can. I have one multicolored one from Valdani Threads....I'm on my 3rd cone....I use it a lot.
I'm glad I started this thread because it's given me some ideas instead of using brown all the time for piecing. Again don't know why I do but I'm gonna pick up some greys and more creams. thanks guys
I use grays a lot, then light browns unless it is a predominately white quilt.
I use light gray or ecru the most because it blends in nicely when I machine/hand piece.
Some years ago, in a class, we were told that sage green will blend with almost any color, easily--so I keep it on hand for all work with colored fabrics, when sewing on black, I prefer to use dark brown thread, just in case a seam or two need resewing--it is much easier to see the seam, and it does not show after the block is pressed. And, I am a dedicated Aurefil user. piecefully, the old one
I use a medium grey or taupe for most piecing unless it is white or black.
For piecing its always cream, or gray. For applique- match the applique piece, for quilting...the sky is the limit! :D:
I used to think the thread had to match the main color of my quilt and then was told neutral grays and beiges are best. Now I have a hodge podge of thread but still prefer using matching thread, although no thread really shows on the piecing, so you are pretty much safe with either.
I use mediun gray and for applique was suggested to use variegated thread.
Hoppa |
Ecru, off-white, light to medium grey.
i was taught to use no color darker than the lightest color in your quilt.
I use Ecru for the ight colors and Charcoal for the darker colors and the same in the bobbins. That's what my cousins said to use and they both do beautiful work on quilts and other things they do....
I'm with you Murphy, I use a lot of gray and light beige, they seem to blend into invisibility more than other colors. If I'm working on a really "special" quilt, I tend to splurge and match the fabric lol

Beige or light gray.
I'm using white to piece together a quilt. I'm thinking I'll use many different threads to quilt it.
White of off white,...but for Quilting i use the same color as the blocl it self
mostly cream or tan.
I usually use Anton Robison oatmeal for piecing. Will use other colors for dark fabrics but oatmeal works well.
neutrals....off white
neutrals for piecing :-)

This is the hardest subject to respond to. I had to walk away from a large sewing stash for reasons of personal safety, (no longer an issue, thank you for caring) and if I had any idea, how hard it is, to replace a 35 year thread collection, I would have found a way to bring it to Oregon. I got very spoiled being able to just reach for a color and know it would be there. I just bought new thread when I finished a spool. Now, it is 6 years later, and my (thread spool) holder is still half bare. Now when I need a color, I just buy an extra of that color.
The good news is, a neighbor of mine, was thrilled in the extreme when I called to invite her over for coffee, and she arrived to learn that my stash was all hers. We filled her car twice. (She makes quilts for nursing homes.) |
White!
Don't know why.... just do! Hugs |

I use a very light grey Rasant 120 thread. The reels of thread are 1000 metres. It is a wonderful thread and I have never had a problem with it. When I was manufacturing I used to buy all my threads by the box as they had to be a perfect match. So I have plenty of colours on hand. For quilting I usually stick to light grey or light beige and use a matching bobbin unless I feel something else would be a better match for what I am sewing at the time.
Rasant is made by "Ackermann-Goggingen RG". Don't know if this is of help to anyone. I am in Brisbane Australia. lol - Gleniveve |
