What do most of you all use for your piecing and/or machine quilting?

some good links

I use machine quilting thread from Joannes (less expensive stuff for piecing)
I plan to switch to polyester for machine quilting as I heard good things about it
I use hand quilting thread for hand stitching the binding
I plan to buy silk for needle turn applique (haven't tried hand applique yet)

One of the big pointers I picked up is that different machines work better with different threads (for no apparent reason). One thread type/brand may work beautifully in one machine and may not work in another.

i love the threads from connecting threads- now days i pretty much buy all my thread from them-
their new machine quilting thread is wonderful.
for hand work/applique and piecing i use silk thread...i just love using it- it is fine-strong and smooth great to work with.

I've only used Coats & Clark on my featherweight...works great, and I have a ton of it that I'm trying to use up. My Viking works well with many brands, except for Connecting Threads brand. I generally use Aurifil, Wonderfil, Gutterman or Coats & Clark. The Aurifil/Wonderfil spools last a long time and I think it's better price for the quantity than some of the other brands.

Aurifil 50 wt for piecing, 12, 28, or 40 wt for quilting. Or Masterpiece by Superior for piecing, Perfect Quilter or King Tut for quilting. I love Superior's titanium needles. They have TONS of info on their website.

Polyester will melt from a hot iron

I like Marathon threads , for piecing and for longarm quilting

I like Connecting Thread's Essential Pro on the cone for most of my machine quilting. I have some of every brand of thread there is bought on sale over the years. I got a lot of Aurifil thread on clearance and it's very good. Glide from Fil Tec is excellent for colorful machine quilting. I like WonderFil thread and of course my all time favorite thread is YLI silk thread. Superior thread is almost perfect. Guttermann is great. Mettler is strong. Star seems a little linty but good. C&C works when others keep breaking. Sulky is glamorous. Robinson Anton has a great selection of colors. Each brand has a pros and cons. You'll find your favorites as you start using all the different brands.

That is the most eloquent and informative description of quilting thread I have ever read. Thanks for the list of different brands! Do you use cotton or polyester?

I am not much of a machine quilter, but for piecing I prefer to use 100% cotton, 50 wt, 3 ply thread. I like Auriful and Guttermann, but have also used other brands.
