I had trouble FM quilting with my QE4 too, and finally had success when I changed to needle to either topstitch, or Jeans needle ( can't remember which one).

I had problems with my thread breaking also. I changed needles, different thread, different batting. It would always break. Could do straight stitch with the sandwich no problem.....fast slow it didn't matter. Had a talk with my dealer, he recommended usung a good polyester thread, gutterman or Madeira, and to go at a fast speed. With the sample I had it worked!!!!! I really do like the machine, it has some wonderful features. I will keep following this thread, hope to gain more insight.

What helpful and supportive replies. Many thanks for taking the time. I've had a bit of a breakthrough today and feel so good. I'll try the 'spool in the cup' trick tomorrow. It makes such a difference if you feel you're getting somewhere at last. What a fabulous forum.

do you have a thread cone holder I use mine instead of the little one on the machine

Another good tip. I'd thought of ordering one so will try that too. Thanks

Might need a different type of needle.

FMQ with QE4

Just in case anyone else is having problems with their QE4 when FMQ'ing, this is what seemed to 'cure' my breaking threads and skipped stitches (I was getting about 10 stitches and then mayhem).
* drop feed dogs
*Spring Free Motion (in toolbox)
*Tension-4:6
*90 needle (new)
*Medium speed (press button and use arrows to adjust)
*One-eyed footplate
*Thread in stand up position (will be changing to separate holder when it arrives in the post)
*Pivot height -3 (in toolbox)
*Stitch length to 0
*Open-toed foot
*Auto foot lift to off (in toolbox)

***Re-thread top and bottom (bobbin) after any subsequent breakage

If anyone needs any elaboration on any of the above, please PM me .

Hope it helps someone else
I'm now in my second day of FMQ heaven.

Annie
