Three fabric quilt!

Anyone have a pattern for using only three fabrics in a quilt?

ManiacQuilter2 07-10-2014 04:43 AM

BQ and BQ2 by Mable Island require only 3 fabrics. If you do an advance search, I know there have been pictures posted here. It is also a very simple pattern.

I just ran into one when looking for jelly roll quilts. Lover's Knot by Eleanor Burns - they have a book of it at Joann's.

This is my 3-fabric quilt. It's a lover's knot.... in red, white, and blue.

nanna-up-north 07-10-2014 07:31 AM

OOps, I guess it's 4 fabrics.... sorry.

krafty14 07-10-2014 07:32 AM

I just finished one. Let me see if I can find a picture. I don't have a pattern though, but it is sort of easy to figure out. It is made of four patches, half square triangles, and a focus fabric.

Nanna--that is a lovely quilt (and a great picture! I want to crawl in there and take a nap. :) ). I just ordered a book of three-fabric patterns, but it hasn't arrived yet. The author's last name is Weiner.

Eleanor Burns, Day and Night quilt. It can be made with two or three fabrics. But you have to buy the book to get the special ruler to make the quilt.

There is a book called 3-Fabric Quilts - very simple patterns. You can see it on Amazon.http://smile.amazon.com/3-Fabric-Qui...-fabric+quilts

I made this quilt using one of the patterns. I don't remember what it was, but I did do something wrong on this pattern. I might have been supposed to use the white where one of the prints is. Like I said, I don't remember, but I had a lot of that print yardage and wanted to use it up and quickly. :)

Here are a couple of my BQ2 quilts. It's an easy pattern that goes together quickly and I get great compliments on them.

I usually make scrap quilts, but this is one that I made with 3 colors. I used the Kaleidoscope ruler

Double Irish chain is a classic three color quilt. If you go to the gallery, you can see lots of ideas for this pattern. Go to picture section and click on the first sticky note, then search patterns until you see Irish chain, I think it is on the fourth page.

3 fabrics

you can make many blocks with only 3 fabrics. The basics like a split rail or use three in a nine patch (2 around edge and the third for the center) even make it a D9P for more design choices. You can even do a log cabin with only three. I would do that one as a curve (logs are 2 1/2 and other side is 1 1/2). Try printing out a favorite block in black and white to get a better idea of using only two or three colors. Remember, it is your quilt - use the fabrics you want. I tell my students to start with the fabric that makes you smile and then compliment it.

sparkysmom, MaggieLou, Chesterthebunny and trolleystation--thanks for sharing your quilts. smom--love how you made your pattern your own!

Warm Wishes is a good three fabric quilt and easy to make as well as the Triple Irish Chain.

solstice3 07-11-2014 11:31 AM

Don't some of the turning twenty patterns lend themselves to that?

GagaSmith 07-11-2014 01:53 PM

This is an easy three fabric and three patch block. If you click to go to the next page you will see the many different ways is can be arranged.

I've seen a tossed nine patch done with three colors. It was cool.

Check out Jo's Country Junction. She has 2 quilts in red, white & black that she has just finished in the Rail Fence pattern & they look really nice.

You can go to Quilter's Cache. They have a lot of three color patterns. I have made several of them since I like to do samplers. I love to pick out my colors and go from there and I like the three color quilts. Edie

paoberle 07-12-2014 03:56 AM

Split rail.

squires1042 07-12-2014 08:28 AM

If you go to quilters cache she has the day and night block on the site. It does not require a special ruler to do it.
