you need to read the batting packaging- some batts are not good to use for tied quilts- they will separate and ball up inside the quilt when washed

a batt good for tied quilts will say so on the packaging- or batts that will allow up to 10" between quilting stitches (most of the time) work alright.
there are many different (lofts) available in good batts for tied quilts - anywhere from thin 1/8" loft- up to 1" loft---which is almost comforter fluffy!
just have to make sure it is not going to separate and ball up- become an unsightly mess of your quilt after just a few washings

not quite (correct) the batting is the determining factor---some batts ARE NOT SUITED FOR TYED QUILTS you can find different lofts to use- but you need to read the packaging- if the batting says it needs to be quilted every 2"-4" it IS NOT SUITABLE for tyed quilts- it will pull apart and ball up between the tyes- after just a few washes.
batts that are suitable for tyed quilts-say so on the packaging.
