When I tie a quilt does the quilt have to have a lot of batting to make it puffy or can it be a low batting?

I tie low loft often, without a problem. If you prefer a puffy look, that would work also. I prefer low loft.

The loft doesn't matter. You can tie any quilt.

It can be anything you want it to be. I do both low and high loft batting.

Any batting can be tied. Just look at the package, and it will tell you how closely you need to quilt it so you know how closely to place the ties.

My mother in law has a hand tied quilt WITHOUT any batting at all. One of her friends made it for her and called it a Summer Quilt. It's lightweight for the summer bed. I love it!

High loft or low loft -- you can tie with both it just depends on the look you want. The only caution is to be sure you read the directions that come with the batting and make sure you follow the directions about how far apart to quilt. I have a friend who tied a quilt with warm & natural batting and the batting did not hold up to a lot of washing because she tied it too far apart.
