I will try it with pins. When the rep was here, she said to attach each piece of the quilt with straight pins. When I was taking it off, I got a deep gash from one of the pins, so I switched to safety pins, like the video showed. But I think I will try straight pins for attaching the top to the back, as you mentioned. That sounds like a great idea - thank you

It is a learning process especially if the rep didn't take the time to teach you all about quilting on the TL18. Is there a shop nearby that has the TL18 that you could go and watch? Or maybe a friend or someone in a guild that uses the machine or perhaps at the LQS. Anywhere you could get some hands on experience would help. However, the dealer you bought it from owes you the training, you have already paid for it in your package deal. You need to demand the training, what you received is the equivalent in reality of a major part being missing from your order. Think about that. You've been cheated out of that part. Also explain that you do not want the same instructor as before, and while you're at it, tell the company exactly how much traing you did receive.

I have a Viking Branded Tin Lizzie 18LS. I also just use long straight pins to attach the backing fabric to both the leaders. I first pin about every 4-5 inches, then go back and put another pin in between. Then I float the batting & top, and just use the pins to pin them to the backing. I carefully measure the placement of the top to the markings on my leader to make sure it's on straight. Works for me, but I'm going to get some zippers...

ETA: I attach the backing to the leader for the roller under the arm of the machine (take up?). I carefully roll all the backing onto this roller, smoothing all wrinkles out & checking the ends.. this way I know it's on straight. Then I attach the other end, and roll it back, again very carefully! I use those long yellow headed pins from the notions wall at Joann's. As far as I am concerned they are worthless for sewing, but work great for pinning the quilt!
