(yet another one of those tips that I "just don't get it")

So please explain how pushing out just the bottom fabric would solve this problem? Doesn't that cause the seam allowance on the bottom piece to be a full 1/4" and the top one is the only one that would get the 'scant' measurement? So one piece of say a HST would measure correctly and the other would be 'off?' Help.

btw, thank you to THIS person who actually took the time to put up a big honkin' picture taken STRAIGHT ON and up close to show exactly what is meant by this 'scant' quarter inch. Every other video that I've seen has the person sitting at the machine while the camera is positioned somewhere to the left of the sewing table and/or too far away to actually SEE what's going on, which is NO help to those of us who need to SEE it.

I have a special foot but it never said on it which part to line up with the edge of the fabric. When I measured it, it turns out to be just inside the inside edge of the presser foot. Reading this now I am thinking that it must be the foot is for use with a different needle position, but I am used to it now...... Was hardly worth spending money on though.

I m certainly going to give this a try.

I will try but feel like this will make my problem worse as the trouble I have is that the seams are a generous rather than scant 1/4".

Guidelines4Quilting has a Prep Tool that gives you a scant 1/4". I've had it a couple of years now. You can buy their Guides, which are sticky tabs that adhere to your sewing machine and leave no sticky residue but are super thick and come (I think) 5 to a pack. I have been sewing scant 1/4" seams for so long and am finally making blocks that come out the correct size. Just go to Guidelines4Quilting.com and look up prep tool. It's good for other uses, also.

Thank you for posting this. I had this problem last night as I was finishing a project. The bottom layer of fabric wiggled over and missed stitches entirely. Can't wait to try your tip today.
