Tired of this project. Wanna start new.

Been working on this 42x54 scrappy top for over a week and so so tired of it. Would love to start new but afraid if I do I will have given birth to a new UFO. Seams (LOL) to happen quite often. Get sooo close to the finish line and ....LOOK a really cool pattern ! and I have the perfect fabric!

quiltingcandy 01-26-2021 10:59 PM

Every project I work on I get tired of before it is finished. If I don't force myself to finish, it becomes a UFO. There are so many projects I want to work on and each one takes a lot of time. (You should see my stack of patterns and let's not talk about the fabric that was totally irresistible.)

Rhonda K 01-27-2021 04:13 AM

Are we sisters?

That happens all the time.On top of that one, I get totally lost when it's time to choose a new project and can't decide!

Sewing? Embroidery? Applique? Quilting? Layer Cakes? JR? Charms? or Scraps?

jmoore 01-27-2021 04:19 AM

Julienm1, didn’t I see your name in the 2021 UFO thread? LOL. Just sayin.....

sophia 01-27-2021 05:43 AM

I know what you mean, I get so bored sometimes with what I am working on and I start a new I now am doing hexagons lol I guess with everything going on in our world and having to stay at home. because of this covid I can't keep my mind on one thing so I find it a little challenge and just keep on rooting through my things that have started this helps me keep busy even if it does not get finished busy hands keep my mind clear on theses dark and wintery days. we just got to hold on and do what makes us happy.

Snooze2978 01-27-2021 05:56 AM

I tend to have a couple projects going at the same time. This way if I start to get tired of one I can work on the other until I either finish it or get tired of it. Then I can go back to the other one and work on it again. Right now I've lost my sewing mojo and can't seem to get interested in quilting what I do have finished up to that point. Right now I have 12 large quilts plus 2 table runners sitting waiting for me to get my mojo back. Usually I do most of my quilting in the winter time but have construction going on upstairs in the kitchen and every time I feel like quilting I either fall down the stairs and have to sit it out for awhile or the contractor is working upstairs and I'm afraid they'll turn off the power or hit a wire in the walls while I'm working and zap my machine.

Onebyone 01-27-2021 06:25 AM

I can stop sewing on a quilt and put it up for months before I go back to it. I put everything I need to finish it in a project bin with it. Even the ruler if I need to cut speciality pieces. I can pull out a project and start where I left off. I like having quilts that need finishing that I can grab and sew.

Jordan 01-27-2021 06:52 AM

I am right there with you Julienm1. I have been making blocks with elephants and just yesterday decided I am tired of making them and wanted to work on something else. But---onward I must go to finish these elephant blocks even tho' I got fabric out and ironed to start another project. What is wrong with me or am I just among a lot of quilters that have many, many UFO's?????

Kitsie 01-27-2021 08:02 AM

This is why I love doing my 6" blocks! A new one everyday and very few duplicates! (Although I have been loving making the twin baby girls quilts!)

Tartan 01-27-2021 08:49 AM

When the fun leaves, start something new! I like to work on several things in rotation so I don’t get bored.

Kelsie 01-27-2021 08:55 AM

I am in a similar predicament. I can’t seem to get to the sewing machine. The project for our bed is the one that I feel I should be working on but it has developed problems. I told myself the other day it would be better to do anything rather than just sit and read or watch telly. Even if I do create a new UFO.

Peckish 01-27-2021 10:10 AM

I refuse to force myself to do anything. I quilt for fun, and if it's not fun, then I put that aside and do something that IS fun for a while. Life is too short.
Funny thing is, usually it stops being fun when I'm struggling with something. Putting it aside for a minute allows me to think, problem solve, and grow more skilled. More often than not, when I return to the original project, I'm able to fix the issue and finish the project, which makes it fun again.

sewingpup 01-27-2021 11:16 AM

yep...I quilt for fun...if it isn't fun....I don't do it. I have plenty of UFO's and plenty of unstarted new projects....every once in a while I get hit with a "let's finish up things" bug....and then I pick up a few of the UFO's to finish and I feel good about it....but I don't keep working on something I find a chore to do. eventually...if I live long enough, it will get done. Of course a good audio book really helps move things along sometimes when I am just trudging along with my quilting....

And this is why I didn't sign up on the UFO thread, lol! I've got enough stress in my life I think... but doggone if this scenario doesn't hit me pretty much every time! https://cdn.quiltingboard.com/images...s/rolleyes.png

I'm with you. I like the designing. So after that it's work. Put on the music. I'm thinking of putting a TV in here for movies. The project currently in progress was all cut out and some of the sewing completed, but it called for more designing. Added 5 red 2" squares to give it a surprise and pop. Then off to sewing to see if my idea worked. Yep. Now it's get it finished. Just have pressing and stitching rows together, pressing. Then it gets measured, folded and put in plastic bag with all leftovers. It'll be in line for the LA. It's in a room off the garage and right now it's pretty cold out there. It needs music in that room.

The LA is the hold up point. I need ideas to make it more enjoyable to do that part. What motivates you to do the step of quilting?

Karamarie 01-27-2021 02:07 PM

When I am working on a project and get tired of it, I go work on a puzzle or read. If I'm really desperate, I clean house a little and then am ready to get back to my quilt project.

mjpEncinitas 01-27-2021 04:53 PM

I always have lots of projects going on at once. I’m trying not to start anything new. If I get tired of what I’m working on I switch to another project. I usually have one piecing/top project and one FMQ project out at a time. I can move from one to another. Keeps me motivated.

oksewglad 01-27-2021 06:42 PM

And this is why I am on the UFO threadhttps://cdn.quiltingboard.com/images...es/biggrin.pnghttps://cdn.quiltingboard.com/images/smilies/eek.png! Working on some 6" stars now and nearing the finish line of getting 63 done for the planned quilt...just keep sewing just keep sewing...Good thing they are from scrap fabrics and add a little variety in the outcomes. BTW I think I have 10 more to go.

aashley333 01-28-2021 04:28 AM

I noticed that project was singular! I bounce from project to project. Finished binding Ocean Quilt, quilting blue jean DP quilt, interrupted quilting to make tote bags mentioned in a post, Cut the glass for my Surfer Girl stained glass window, and finishing besties 4th, yes 4th, window for her bathroom. (will post pics in non-quilting forum)...And that is this week. Already looking for next project with ombres...

the fun hasn't left.
it's only that more fun has caught your attention.

Tartan's advice is "spot on."https://cdn.quiltingboard.com/images...es/thumbup.png

I finish one project before I start another . That way I avoid UFOs. If I get bored what I will do is take a day and make string blocks or crumb blocks . When I have enough I make a quilt.

gramma nancy 01-28-2021 03:42 PM

If you are more than 50 percent done, don't worry about making it a UFO.. Think how quickly it will be completed when you get back to it.

That's what tends to happen to me. I pick up a UFO and usually am amazed at how quickly I can finish.

SusieQOH 01-28-2021 05:11 PM

I hear you, Julie! I get bored so I usually have a couple or even a few projects going at once. That way I don't get bored. I don't do many scrap quilts but I have one going with those Creative Grids Scrap Crazy templates. If I just want to sew I sew up those blocks. It's been there for awhile but it's fine. I'll eventually finish it. Sometimes I just want to sew without thinking :)

zennia 01-29-2021 04:58 AM

I was in the same boat, getting bored with a project. So I picked one day a week to work on another project. I call it my Sunday , whatever day you pick, box. I am more content working on my projects this way. I also have knitting to do when I am tired of the sewing machine. I am thinking of doing 7-day boxes. Would be different each day.

I am the mother of creating UFO's and, that's OK.
I get to them eventually.
I have a list on my wall and mark them off as they get done, add them to the bottom as they get created. https://cdn.quiltingboard.com/images...es/biggrin.png I figure I 'm not going anywhere and they won't go bad, so why work on something that isn't giving me joy right now?

Like your list idea, so am going to tweek it. Write each project on a note and pin to design wall. On the note write any pertinent info + date stuck on wall. At one time I had a special board divided into 3 catagories; in progress, waiting and finished. This way I didn't have to wonder what needed to be done, the note was in view at all times so the project could be filed and finished gave me satisfaction I was making progress. Maybe put on note some reminder of what the project looks like (pieces of fabric, photo, pattern, etc.).

I needed a break from current "big" project of bear paws. So whipped up a baby quilt for my pregnant cousin in 2 nights. Not gonna lie. I felt pretty boss.

rryder 01-30-2021 05:16 AM

I always have multiple projects going at once. When one project gets boring, I can move to another machine and another project. Of course, this means my studio often looks like a fabric and thread explosion happened in there https://cdn.quiltingboard.com/images...es/biggrin.png. I also don't mind putting some projects away to save for later, which is why I will always have UFOs. The UFO thread is great for helping me keep them to a manageable number so I don’t overwhelm my storage space.

I too give birth frequently to many UFO's. When that happens I cut out my next quilt that I just have to do. Then I go back to the UFO's. It's like I can't wait to cut the fabric for each quilt I want to make.
