How rude!! Doesn't she get paid to sale fabric? Has she been to your home? Are you required to show her all of your finished projects?
You gave her a big opening. You don't owe her any kind of excuse or explanation. "I'll take the last two yards also." Period.
If she makes a snide remark, just say loudly, "Bless your heart, I can't believe that you say such rude things to your customers." In a sugar, sweet voice ofcourse.

My sister owns a vinyl graphics business and she uses coroplast. It is an acid free plastic. She custom cuts the pieces for me. I use them to wrap my fabric around (on the bookcases) and use as dividers in my drawers and shelves. She sells lots of them on e-bay for quilters to do what I did. I love being able to see my stash without having to mess up piles when I just want to pull one or two pieces.

Christine M. Scheppard 01-23-2010 11:50 AM

it's like explaining to someone why you have to go to the ladies room.......I hate explaining!

Honey 01-23-2010 12:19 PM

In the first place, it is none of her **** business if you go in and want to buy out the whole place!! The owner of my lqs would do cartwheels naked down the street if I won the big one and came in for 3 yards of everything!! For that matter, so would I! And if I worked in a quilt shop, I would NEVER take home a pay check. Charismah, I think you show great restraint by not spending the whole thing there! I always buy the end of the bolt if there is only a little left. Sometimes when there's more than a little left! I am very compasionate and would not want that little bit sitting lonely at the store! Where is the Mill Ends place in MN? If it is close to my nephew I may have to go visit!

pittsburgpam 01-23-2010 12:49 PM

Thank you, thank you, thank you. I have been feeling quilty about buying fabric and I have NO WHERE NEAR what you all seem to have. There are a couple of collections out right now that I love but I think... I already have fabric that I don't know what I'm going to make with. Then I think... but if I don't get it now there won't be any more of it. Then I think... but there will be other ones that come along that I will like too. Then I think...

LOL Pam I can so relate to the mind game thing. I did the same thing all this week. A not so LQS that is about 50 miles from me is having a sale this week on batiks at 20% off. I argued with myself all week should I go, shouldn't I go. I already have fabric separated out for 3 quilts and think to myself, I really shouldn't add to my stash until I use some of what I have and at least get started on 1 of the 3. I ended up not going and working on different UFO instead. I figure they will have another sale and this summer I am planning a trip to Lancaster County so if I don't buy now I can buy more then. Plus I want to save up for my long arm.

Christine M. Scheppard 01-23-2010 01:47 PM

Pam - you are so funny - I do the same thing when I go food shopping - by the time I get to the middle of the store, I can't push the cart and then I start putting things back and end up with nothing. That is something I am working on - lol - I'm worth it!!! Not to sound like a L'oreal commercial.

I look at it this way. Jim has never given me a hard time about buying fabric (or anything else). So I do what I want as long as it does not cut into the money for bills.

Hey Misty, I would love to know what that wall unit, or rack is that you are using on the wall with the 1-2 yard fold pieces? Is it a local store item I can go pick up, or can you tell me what it is and where to find it? I am finally organizing my fabric just like you have yours..funny, great minds, same track teehehee...but that 'hangin' unit or whatever it is is great for those smaller pieces. I am slow at organizing, but I am going to get there. Signed on, on the other thread, to admit I am a fabric aholic, and will never go for the cure!

Fabriholic 01-23-2010 02:59 PM

WooHoo ... $2.00 a yard at the LQS! I know that I wouldn't have been happy with just the one piece of fabric and would have had to buy more. You showed great restraint. As to her comment, she knows we quilters buy LOTS of fabric and if the "kidding" tone wasn't in her voice, then it may have sounded sarcastic.
When I present the bolts at the cutting counter and am asked "how much do you need" my response is "I don't need any ... I JUST WANT IT." That is why I'm Fabriholic.

rainbowquilt 01-23-2010 03:23 PM

It's unbelievable just how much fabric you can accumulate. I was even in a HARDWARE store today and they had fleece $1.99 for a 50" x 70" pieces! Well, guess what ---- i bought about $40 worth LOL

Can I come over and play??? Your stash is wonderful. It is like having your own quilt shop.

Your organization is just great. You must be so inspired everytime you walk in there.

WOW!! 87?? You could quilt for years and never run out! I guess that is another way to look at it, if the world came to an end you could quilt for a long time.

Misty, HOW do you have that fabric folded, so it stays on the shelf like that; like books at the library..I love the way you have it, but have NO idea how to go about folding it, to make it stand like that......please share with us how you do it....so I can be a copy cat...........4dogs/ Judy

(I still have several more containers of fabric that haven't made it into this room yet to get organized.) Prior to this last month, I didn't really have any place to put my fabric where it could be organized, so my stash grew in large part because I didn't know where my fabric was, so I had to buy more when I wanted to do a project. Now, when I think about sewing, I can just walk downstairs and "shop" in my fabric room. Hallelujah!

Can I come shop at your house lol! You have more fabric than my LQS and I am not joking!

vickig626 01-23-2010 05:27 PM

Our LQS is clearing out older fabric (fabric that's just not selling much anymore) so she's got them in a pile for $10 or $20 for the rest of the bolt. The $10 bolt has at least 4-5 yards left and the $20 bolt has 8+ yards. Great way to buy quality backing fabric.

My sister cut those white "boards" for me to fit my shelves. They are coroplast (that sign makers use) which is an acid free plastic 1/4" thick. I just slipped them in the shelves. (I did the same for my dresser drawers to hold my fat quarters.)

I was tired of my stacks falling over onto the stack beside or off the side of the shelf if I pulled the stacks out, so I asked her if she could cut them exact for me and she did.

It is wrapped around coroplast and paper clipped (with plastic coated paper clips). I could never get it to stand up like that on it's own. I saw a website a few years ago that sold something similar, but by the time I got done paying for the shipping and the clips to keep the fabric on their boards, each board would have cost about $1.50, so I started looking for an alternative. My sister had some left over coroplast from a sign she had made and gave it to me to "try-out." It worked great and I now have over 300 of them in use. I only put the 2 yard+ cuts on them, so I know that I can plan a quilt around each fabric if I want to.

I suggested to her that she make the boards available on Ebay for other quilters and she has sold hundreds and hundreds over the last few years. She charges a lot less than those I have seen in quilt stores and on-line, so it is not that expensive to get organized.

sewgull 01-23-2010 06:21 PM

When my mother passed away my sisters and I divided her fabric. I am saving a piece of her fabric to pass on to the next generation of sewer in the family.
Fabric is so relaxing to sit an look at the colors.

bob1414 01-23-2010 06:21 PM

That person should not be working there. If the owner knew what she said...............

I'am with you all. My DH said I could start my own store.. But I tell him I get most of it on sale and when I what to make a quilt or sew a new skirt or something I usually have it and don"t have to make that trip to the fabric store..

lisalovesquilting 01-24-2010 03:38 AM

My friend who owns the LQS asks me what I'm going to do with certain fabrics I buy. I usually say I don't know, I'll think of something.

Hobbyhorse1027 01-24-2010 11:10 AM

I always try to give people the benefit of the doubt. Maybe the sales person was not trying to be rude. She grossly misjudged your response. Perhaps she was just trying to make conversation. I've had employees and the store owner make comments about how often I visit the store. Usually it is to see if I have a project in mind or to make conversation, and never to judge. These brief conversations made me feel like I wasn't just another customer. If a comment bothers you tell the clerk right away. How else will she know that it bothers you. Just my 2 cents.

Her name is Gwimpylou on Ebay. If you go to her store, you can find her listings. Mine are 8" x 11.75" (I believe) so that I can fold my fabric in half, then half again and wrap them around. This allows me to use a regular bookshelf. She sells them for fat quarters too.

Isn't it lucky for them that you chose to spend your $$ at that store. Your pile in part contributes to her paycheck. She was probably upset that she had to cut the "cheap" fabric, since we all know that expensive fabric cuts so much easier. (I need that sarcasm smiley).

Just for grins, has anyone actually taken stock of how much value is in your sewing room? I tried it the other day and decided that it is "a fortune." No need to define it any further than that.

I shop from my stash all the time. It is the greatest thing to just open my cabinets and start pulling fabrics spur of the moment to whip something up. I just did it again an hour ago.....

I was only going to buy a yard of halloween fabric that was in the red tag section today, but there were 30 inches besides left on the bolt so it came home with me lol I'm always checking the remnant bins as well.
