Is this too soft?

1 Attachment(s)
I am not sure that is the right question, but I want to make a quilt that isn't bright, where nothing really "pops." (My last two have been so bright that I almost needed sunglasses when I sewed.)

I have laid these five inch blocks on my design wall, and I like it. I even like how the two fabrics tend to blur together.

But now I am wondering if it is too "soft," colorwise. I have been looking at it for a day now, and I am ready to actually sew the blocks together....but I am wondering if I am stalling because it is too soft?

So, I should proceed, right? If I like it, it doesn't matter what my guild would say about it? (My quilts always seem so different from the others in Show and Tell.)

Hey, that's because you are you. Be yourself! That's how new things come about. You don't follow the crowd. I like it. You have a dark, a medium and a light. Go for it.

ArtsyOne 08-21-2012 07:52 AM

There's nothing wrong with "soft" coloring - I think it's very pretty.

crafty pat 08-21-2012 07:52 AM

I really like the color's you chose. It will be a beautiful quilt.

janedee 08-21-2012 07:55 AM

I think its really pretty and if you like it - why not - you're probably still dazzeled by your previous quilts !!!!!

DogHouseMom 08-21-2012 07:55 AM

It's great ... even though it's "soft" you still have good contrast to bring the pattern out.

Crqltr 08-21-2012 07:57 AM

I like it. If you think it needs a little more you could make a narrow border with a darker purple then soft again, that would add a liitle pop.

charity-crafter 08-21-2012 07:59 AM

I like it, the darker purple is just a hint darker then the other purple. It doesn't pop but it's still nice. Sometimes nice is good. You're eyes will thank you when you are quilting.

Treasureit 08-21-2012 08:01 AM

Now THIS appeals greatly to me! I love comfortable colors and your design has enough contrast to make is stand out, but not SCREAM....

Deborahlees 08-21-2012 08:04 AM

I like it, that is the fun of sewing/quilting...one day you can be loud and one day you can be soft and then one day you can be just plain silly :D

I like your quilt and it's good to try new things.
You don't need to please others...just be yourself.

I have always loved scrappy quilts.
The more colors, the better.
Then I decided to try a quilt that was 3 shades of one color.
I couldn't believe how much I liked it!
Scrappies still make my heart sing but I am so glad that I made the other one.
Since then, I have made 3 other 'soft' quilts.

Prism99 08-21-2012 08:59 AM

I like it as is. If you want to "punch it up" just a little bit, I would maybe add a narrow sashing type border. Perhaps cut 1.5" strips of a deep purple fabric and run that along each side between the last two blocks. Repeat that fabric in the binding. The quilt would stay soft, but there would be an added design element in it.

I love the softness of it. The contrast of your lovely fabrics is just right.

bearisgray 08-21-2012 09:04 AM

I like it - sometimes soft and soothing is very pleasant to have around.

bearisgray 08-21-2012 09:07 AM

I see no reason why every quilt has to 'pop'!!

That's what guns do! That's what pants seams do when there is more a** than fabric to cover it! That's what Rice Krispies do! That's what some chewers do with their gum! That's what knuckle crackers do to their joints!

valleyquiltermo 08-21-2012 09:10 AM

I love it just the way it is, of course purple is my fav color. Saying that I really love Rangers blue quilt also.

QuiltnNan 08-21-2012 09:16 AM

i think it's wonderful just the way it is!

cjsews 08-21-2012 09:24 AM

I like the softness of this one. I tend to vary from darks to brights. I don't know what keeps me from the soft colors. They are so comforting looking. Maybe add a darker binding if you want that little pop.

Anael 08-21-2012 09:36 AM

I love it!
Ranger, your quilt is lovely too.

My thoughts exactly!! I like your "soft" quilt.

5moose 08-21-2012 10:39 AM

I think it is very pretty and "soft" but I like pretty and "soft." I think a dark purple border followed by a light border would be stunning!

Dina 08-21-2012 11:18 AM

Thanks for the comments, ladies. I think I am ready to continue now. :) Ranger, I love your blue quilt!

It's beautiful!!! I find it refreshing, to see quilts that don't "pop" one into a migraine! I LOVE your colors together!!!

cad_queen_2000 08-21-2012 12:11 PM

I like it. I also agree with everyone else about the darker border. Don't ever let anyone tell you what you like. Go with your heart, it knows best.

debquilts2 08-21-2012 12:19 PM

Nice dark purple boarder would make it look prettier to you

Cybrarian 08-21-2012 01:48 PM

I think it's beautiful -- variety is the spice of life!

alisonquilts 08-21-2012 01:52 PM

I like it very much, and I bet "in person" it has even a slight bit more contrast. Go for it, and possibly consider the narrow dark purple border idea when you see what it looks like shrunk down from sewing.

lynnie 08-21-2012 01:52 PM

I just love it!!!!

LadyElisabeth 08-21-2012 02:13 PM

I really like it, but then I am a lavender/purple person

alfosa421 08-21-2012 02:21 PM

I think it's lovely but if you have a touch of "need to spice it up " use boldly colored thread to quilt a design on it!!! Soft is good

ckcowl 08-21-2012 02:46 PM

i don;t think it's too soft at all- i think it is lovely...sew it together & enjoy it :)

wolph33 08-21-2012 02:53 PM

beautiful colors.

Amen! It's gorgeous, just as it is!

tesspug 08-21-2012 04:44 PM

It reminds me of lilacs. Some are pale with just a hint of contrast. I think it is very pretty.

nannyrick 08-21-2012 04:49 PM

I think it is very pretty.

hperttula123 08-21-2012 05:36 PM

I think it's beautiful!!! It may not have the pop you are looking for, but it's purdy.

katesnanna 08-21-2012 05:42 PM

Don't know about your guild but I think it's lovely. Not too soft but I get what you mean about the colors blurring. Very restful. It's your quilt and you like it and that's all that matters. Let you creativity flow and let the rest worry about their own quilts.

Lucy90 08-22-2012 04:48 AM

I like the soft look of your quilt. We all need a soft colored one to work on. Be yourself and do what makes you happy.

star619 08-22-2012 04:48 AM

Lovely, lovely quilt. If you finish & decide you are not pleased, pm me for address of loving home to adopt it!

lillybeck 08-22-2012 04:52 AM

This is very nice. I agree that it is up to you what you make. So many times I do things that people say they would never have done that, Your colors are beautiful..
