Totally freaking out

I bought my husband a new grill yesterday. It's gas and charcoal and has a smoker. Today, he decided I should get a new sewing machine. I currently have the Singer Confidence Stylist. I don't have any complaints, but I have been saying a wider throat and embroidery features would be great. So we went to our local dealer. He has Janome and Husqvarna. I didn't have a budget, other than I myself didn't really want to go over $1000. I get buyers remorse before I even buy, so spending money is hard for me. I ended up with a Viking Topaz 30. Obviously went over the $1000 budget, by another $1100! He added in 4 other feet and I get 25% off any accessories. I also get lifetime unlimited classes. It was a good deal, but I have a hard time spending money on myself so I'm freaking out. I hope I love it. Right now though, I still have sweaty palms from the check I wrote!

Congrats!!!!!!!!!!!! Your DH must have loved the grill you bought for him to buy you a new sewing machine.

maverick 03-02-2013 01:48 PM

Listen girl you only live once ..... enjoy and don't look back. You've got a nice machine, enjoy and sew up a storm.

AlienQuilter 03-02-2013 01:50 PM

Enjoy your machine and your DH is a keeper!

ktbb 03-02-2013 01:53 PM

The topaz was rated by consumers digest last year as the best buy in embroidery machines....can I suggest that you get the viking three year extended warranty? It covers EVERYTHING for the three year period - including cleanings! and given the cost of cleaning, and assuming you'll get it cleaned annually as recommended (tho you can do it more often), you'll save lots...since the cost of the warranty is about the cost of one cleaning!

Raggiemom 03-02-2013 02:01 PM

Congratulations and enjoy!

Barb_MO 03-02-2013 02:06 PM

You have a very nice husband to do that for you. Accept it, give him lots of hugs and kisses in payment and get to sewing.

joyce888 03-02-2013 02:45 PM

Congrats! Hopefully the nerves will calm and you'll enjoy your machine.

Tartan 03-02-2013 02:53 PM

Congratulations and you're worth it!

Skratchie 03-02-2013 03:00 PM

Sounds like you both will be "cookin"!
congratulations, have fun

pinkcastle 03-02-2013 04:26 PM

I do understand buyer's remorse. I go through that every time I buy something on the expensive side. But I get over it in time. Enjoy your new machine! Have lots of fun!

Dragonomine 03-02-2013 04:45 PM

Congrats! A sewing machine is WELL worth every penny for someone who uses it as much as we do! It will serve you for many years and pay for itself a few times over!

newbee3 03-02-2013 05:06 PM

I also have the topaz 30 love it

BellaBoo 03-02-2013 05:22 PM

I feel great when I buy something I want, it's fun. Enjoy your machine as much as your DH will enjoy his new grill.

quilter2090 03-02-2013 05:22 PM

You remind me of a friend of mine, she gets so anxious when she buys something for herself she really doesn't enjoy it. Enjoy your new sewing machine. As long as you can afford it, why worry so much? Have some fun with your new sewing machine. Not to be morbid, but, no one knows what the future holds. Live life to the fullest. I am now disabled and sewing is very painful for me, but, I have to keep going even though it hurts me physically. Relax and enjoy that you can use your sewing machine now, at some point that may not be the case. When that time comes, it is better to look back and truly enjoyed yourself. Sorry, don't mean to be a spout off, but when you are in my position, you learn to not sweat the small stuff!

SewFarBehind 03-02-2013 05:24 PM

Congratulations! Love my Husqvarna! It is 20+ years old!

mighty 03-02-2013 05:57 PM

pattypurple 03-02-2013 06:05 PM

Must be the weekend of sweet hubbys. I just posted that mine has said I can get a new machine also. Congratulations and enjoy your new machine

carrieg 03-02-2013 06:24 PM

I know what you mean! My first sewing machine was a $400 Babylock. When I got to the car with it, I just started crying. LOL We are not used to spending $$ on ourselves I guess.

Enjoy your new toy!

Charming 03-02-2013 07:32 PM

First congratulations on your machine. My friend has it and she loves it and I have all Viking machines and they are all great and I love them. I felt the same way when I got my first Viking machine which was $2200 plus tax, but trust me after the fourth one no remorse at all...I welcome the fact that my husband love me and I can buy these machines :-)

sonisew 03-03-2013 02:18 AM

Congrats on your new machine!!!! I have a Viking Topaz 30 and I love it.

QM 03-03-2013 03:58 AM

Have fun!! I'm sure you don't question purchasing a reliable car. You should get quite a bit of "milage" from this machine. My Viking was still in great shape after 20 years when I gave it to my son.

wolph33 03-03-2013 05:12 AM

you only live once and you will use it-it is a tool for us quilters.don't worry be happy-and enjoy your new tool.I have 2 Vikings and love them

Suzette316 03-03-2013 05:19 AM

Gosh I am exactly the same way! I have the hardest time spending large amounts of money on myself! Buyers remorse kicks in for me too almost immediately!:)

But if you're like me, give yourself a couple of days, then that will pass and you can enjoy your wonderful new machine! And good for you splurging a little on yourself! We all need that once in a while. :)

MamaO2011 03-03-2013 05:43 AM

Thank you all for the encouraging words! It's good to hear I'm not alone! I also love that so many that have this machine really love it and have a good history with Viking machines in general. The salesman said "this machine will still be purring along when your girls are in high school." And then one of my best friends said the same thing, so it's good to know it's a lasting investment. I'm up this morning and plan on getting it out of the box and trying it out. I will call the shop Tuesday and set up my first of what I'm sure will be many one on one lessons with it. We met with our small church group last night - 3 members head our community's youth football league and mentioned they have a lot of items they'd love to get embroidered - so now I'm not feeling so scared about the machine not "earning its keep". The excitement is starting to ooze out...so what am I doing here? I should be unpacking my machine!!

And yes, the hubby is a keeper. He's also an enabler - I wanted a less expensive machine, but he said "just get the other one - I don't want to have to buy another machine in a year or two so just get the nicer one now and enjoy it." He is too good to me. He drives me nuts sometimes, but I do love him dearly. He supports any idea that pops in my head and never complains about the cost. He just makes it happen for me. You can't go wrong with a man like that!

Michelekolt 03-03-2013 06:19 AM

I know how you feel, a couple of years ago I did the same thing. I went looking for a new machine only wanting to spend about $500 and I came home with a viking saphire 875. It was like I was buying a car to me, but my husband and my mom both told me I needed to buy the nicer machine.

Now we have been looking at long arms for quilting. Talk about being freaked out! Will see what happens.

Scakes 03-03-2013 06:24 AM

I know the feeling but Congratulations! Enjoy your new machine!

JenelTX 03-03-2013 06:28 AM

Oh, that's so great!!!!! Freaking out in a very good way. I completely relate to how you feel about spending money on yourself... but turn that guilt into motivation to do beautiful work that will be treasured.

lizzieann 03-03-2013 06:45 AM

I've been reading about this machine on katiesquiltingcorner.com. I hope you don't have as much trouble as she has. I have a Husqvarna Quilt Designer and I love it. Good luck.

purplefiend 03-03-2013 06:55 AM

MamaO2011,
Congratulations on buying yourself a lovely new machine that you deserve to have, its a sewist's power tool!!!
I used to sell the Viking machines, love the Topaz 30! You can do quite a bit with it as it takes the bigger hoops. You can quilt with the Topaz 30, just take the embroidery unit off and slide the tool box on.
I bought the Sapphire 875, its great for quilting and garments too.
Sharon

quiltingcradftylady 03-03-2013 06:58 AM

Its only money. You can put out a lot of love with that machine that the money can't buy. Hugs.

hudgoddess 03-03-2013 07:13 AM

Go push some fabric through it. Play with your stitches. Play with your feet. Then give your husband a great big kiss for taking care of you better than you take care of yourself!
Then go marinate some meat for him! Sounds like a fun day!

Mariposa 03-03-2013 07:17 AM

Your hubby thinks that you are worth it! Breathe deep, then enjoy your new machine!!

girlsfour 03-03-2013 07:32 AM

That's great - good for you!!

rjwilder 03-03-2013 09:00 AM

You are worth it, you deserve it, I'm sure you know that by now. Besides life is too short and you never know what the future will bring. Enjoy your new machine and give extra hugs and kisses to hubby and the kids.

MamaO2011 03-03-2013 09:05 AM

So I gave it a whirl! It is much more quiet than my Singer, and I love using the foot pedal to do needle down. It also takes up a ton of real estate on my sewing table, but it's okay. It sews beautifully. I tried the embroidery functions as well, and it was a lot easier than I thought it would be! I think I'm going to have a long, happy relationship with Margaret. (I named her after a nickname that was bestowed on my mom when she was a kid. Not sure why it was Margaret - her name was Juanita Molly - but, when I took the boxes up to my sewing table, that name popped in my head, so there you go!)

This made me smile!!

Just think of all the money you will save having it...that is what my husband said when he bought mine and he was right!! I do my own FMQ'ing, make many things besides quilts now. Pillows, animal toys, table clothes, curtains...the decorative stitches make a huge difference...makes me want to make more. I do want to start making some dresses. Oh just have fun...no regrets!
