Traded to something not vintage, I'm pretty happy with my trade...
 

Early last week, a lady contacted me about a machine that I had for sale in the local buy and sell.
She said she loved it, and wanted possibly a couple of machines I had to do up a display wall in her quilting studio.

While talking to her, she mentioned that she had a B-Line King sized Frame and a Juki TL-98Q that she was going to sell (She's just received a gorgeous computerized Pfaff Mid Arm with a frame.). She bought the frame and machine about 5 years ago, but had some health problems and didn't even finish the original quilt on it. It still has the original needle in it! She told me what she thought it was worth, and a quick Google said her price was more than fair, if a little out of my budget, but a heck of a deal anyway. OK, a lot of out of my budget, but I’m selling machines slowly. ;) I figured if she took a few machines, I'd find the money somehow to pay the remaining amount.

Well she came by Wednesday to look at machines. She picked out a ton of machines :shock: and she wants me to find her a 221. She picked out enough machines that no cash needs to leave either of our hands. :shock::shock::shock:

The frame and Juki came home on Thursday, after I tried it out of course, and immediately bonded with it.

Turns out I'm missing the plastic runners for the 7ft and 12ft configuration, so it's setup in the 10ft configuration at the moment, but as soon as she finds them, or I figure out where to get them from, I'll be shrinking that frame so DHs chair doesn't have to sit 2 feet in front of the wood stove anymore. I told him he'd probably love it in the winter,... built in bun warmer... He's the one who insisted that it be set up upstairs. He said that I wouldn't use it if it's in the basement. Of course not. There are spiders in the basement. I don't do spiders.

Today, I finished the setup, and I hope to have no distractions tomorrow and just time to bond more with the machine.

eta: What the ?? It looks like the curtains got mixed up with another set... they're not usually mismatched,.. I think. :D

You have a fantastic set up. I have exactly the same. I have one very small hint which I hope you read before you play. Don't work for more than 30. Mins at a time .then get up walk around. After I put mine up I sat and did a quilt a bit larger than yours it took me about 2 hours none stop except for bobbins. So easy with the juki .
Next day and definately the days to follow I was so stiff I couldn't do anything . Arms neck etc were soooooo bad. Since then only small times. I also when working small projects use a bar stool which can alter it height to sit on.

Thanks for the warning. I have the same problem with FMQ on the DSMs. When I'm at our sewing circle, I tend to get reminded by other ladies that it's time to get up and walk around. ;) When I"m home, I forget. I'm already sore from the weekend's sporting activities though, so I'm hoping my body will limit me naturally tomorrow. All the reading I did said that the Juki was a fantastic machine, so I was thrilled when this one dropped into my lap. Hopefully I will have a sample of some sort tomorrow.

I'm a little green with envy.....but very happy for you. I'd love to have a setup like that but it would have to go to the basement........ have fun...... let us all see your newly done projects.

curtains? who cares about curtains when you have a great new quilting frame to use?

I also have the grace and juki set/up....it has gotten alot of use by both me and DD...they are a good ulturnative to the expensive LA....

I had to go back and look--I didn't even notice that there were curtains in the room--I was too busy drooling over your new machine. Better yet no cash changed hands--a dream come true. Lucky you!!!

Tammi, Lucky You! I'm sure you'll have lots of fun with that. It is so sweet that your DH wanted it put upstairs. I'm happy for you and am looking forward to seeing what you can do with that baby.

Good for you! I have a New Joy Frame and a Janome 1600, but since I bought my Janome 6600P I have been doing FMQ on that.

You will love this set up and especially your Juki machine. I have the same machine and it is the machine I use 90% of the time. I like it even better than my much fancier Husqvarna because it is so powerful and fast. It just sews without tension issues, thread problems or grumbling about thick layers.

I have a Juki TL98QE (QE means no extension table). I have it in a table and I love it. No room for a frame. It is 5 years old and no trips to the shop, yet. Keep it oiled and bobbin area clean. It likes new needles often also.

I was sure this one would have to go into the basement too, but we realised that we really don't use the dining room table like we used to, and when we first moved into this house, the table was in the kitchen. (Of course the baking table and the 2 cupboards weren't there then, but what the heck, there's still enough room to turn sideways and squeak through the kitchen. ;) )

I'm so going to end up on an episode of horders.

:D I was mostly lamenting the fact that I never see something like that until after I post a pic. Our curtains are behind furniture 80% of the time, and not in view the other 20%, so for all I know, they're all mismatched, and I just never noticed.

Yeah, he may just be a keeper. :) I know there's going to be a learning curve, but it felt fairly natural. The lady I got it from (who turns out to be a distant cousin, BTW) says: "Write your name..." I did (I've never even tried it before on a DSM), and it's legible. Then I tried to dot the "I" with a heart, which I have practiced,... and butchered it. I'm claiming that my left hand creates a little drag. :p

Oh! I like the sound of that! To have a machine I don't have to fuss with is definitely a dream come true. Threading the needle on a machine that can move was challenge enough. The first time it moved while I was threading it, I thought I was having a little vertigo.


Thanks for that clarification! I was getting confused about the different letters at the end and gave up. I figured I'd just concentrate on researching the one I was getting.

Any thoughts on the oil? I know there's a little bottle of it with the machine, but I like my tri-flow. Any reason not to use it that you can think of? Which needles are you using? The standard 130/705s or the high speed needles?

On that thought, I should probably oil this big guy. It's probably been 5 years. Wow does it run nicely considering that.

Congrats! my juki is also on the frame. Its a super machine, you will love it.

Curtains? Oh yeah, the things I USED to have time to put up until I 1) Discovered quilting, and 2) Discovered that toppers and window blinds work ever so well together (and you don't have to worry about whether they match or not!). Enjoy your new machine and frame!

Congratulations from another Juki 98Q owner, only mine is not on the frame. I hope you get even half as much enjoyment from yours as I do mine. I quilt sitting down and actually look forward to the quilting part. This machine just goes and goes and goes...I would love to be able to to buy one of their fancy machines...though I have no idea why. I very seldom use my Viking #1...it has all the fancy stitches I would want, but just seem that I stay busy with quilt stuff since I got the Juki a few years ago. I bought mine without ever trying them out...just read and read on the Juki 98 forum at yahoo.

Lucky you. No money, what a fantastic deal. I, too have the Juki 98 but not on a frame & in my humble opinion it is the best machine (especially for the price) that I own & I own a few. The only drawback is that it is just a straight stitch machine BUT that is the only drawback & there are a lot of positives about it. Enjoy !!!

Ooooohhh sweet! Juki's are great and this one is on a frame. You did good because now you do not have to deal with many different people trying to sell your machines and you instantaneously got space again in your home. Ten feet is nice! Is there any way you can keep it set up that way? Stoke the fire a little less in that wood stove. Hahahaha

What a fantastic barter you made. Bartering is a lost art, but in these harsh economic times we need to consider barter instead of cash. Works for me.

Hah! the only reason still bother with curtains is they block a little sound. Our neighbor likes to run his diesel truck all the time (like warming it up for 45 minutes at time. I think he's more scatterbrained than anything, but that bag of hammers isn't fun to listen to. Any amount of dampening is good. ;))

Well, for now, I think I can only commit to mediocre. Soon though. Soon. ;)

That was a huge plus for me. Most of the people who come to buy a machine from me want me to teach them to use it. Surprisingly, or maybe not, it's not just "how do I thread it", it's often "How do I use it", i.e teach me to sew. I spend way too many hours at that. I could be quilting! :)

I've been eyeballing the frame, and wondering if I'd get any more room by angling it into the corner more. I suppose there's a chance I could get the frame to move enough to put DHs chair back in place. That said, for the time being, I don't think I -need- the 10ft, but we'll see what happens come wood stove season. Perhaps by then, I will be making huge quilts. It could happen. :)

I can't even claim it was my idea. :) Someone was sure looking out for me.

Hah! Thanks! I guess the last couple of years trying to slow down and "live right" are catching up with us.

I have 5 charity quilts sitting in my WIP bookcase, so I'm hoping to start working on those in the next few days. First, I want to use up all of my practice fabric (currently loaded). I'm going back to basics to get a feel for the machine.
