Trash Bag

I want to make a trash bag for a friends husbands car. Sometimes I think it sounds like a good
idea then sometimes I don't think it would be a good idea. Would you make one for your husband, or man friend?

azwendyg 01-16-2012 03:16 AM

I think it's a great idea! Who doesn't need a trash bag in the car?

wuv2quilt 01-16-2012 03:17 AM

Sure....sounds like a good idea to me

deemail 01-16-2012 03:59 AM

be sure to make it fit a gallon baggie or a grocery store plastic bag so they have a liner ...otherwise they will not ever empty them... the liners make it a snap... just give him a supply and make your bag so that the handles hook onto buttons or something...

TanyaL 01-16-2012 04:33 AM

We have one in our truck which my husband loves. It is about 6x8x2. It hangs right below the right side of the radio. He is very good about emptying it when it gets full. He was very picky about the fabric. I used a masculine dark small check.

Nana2Sew 01-16-2012 05:42 AM

Yes......and they are very useful. I saw one made from men's suit fabric and it was bound with fabric from a tie.

Scraps 01-16-2012 05:44 AM

Great idea! I am putting that on my list for my sons ----will do in University colors!! Thanks!

gemladi 01-16-2012 05:46 AM

I made my husband a cover for his paperback books ... I think the trash bag is a good idea and may use your idea, thanks.

I have a friend that makes them in all different colors and sells them at a craft booth for $10. They sell like hot cakes. She uses a vinyl like from drapes for the liner so it is easy to clean.

Love it! I can picture it hanging in a Beemer :)

athomenow 01-16-2012 08:07 AM

Any pics so we can see what they look like. Sounds like a great idea.

jaciqltznok 01-16-2012 08:17 AM

why not...they make trash too! of course I bet you can't use anything floral, or hello kitty, but dang..they make camo, deer, fish, etc fabric too!

IAmCatOwned 01-16-2012 09:03 AM

This is the only one that has worked for me on long trips (photo is of commercial one). Easy to make in your special fabric. Be sure to attach the bottom to the seat or it can whip around and hit you if you stop fast. I didn't line it, but if he eats food in the car, then you might want to. I don't use it day-to-day. Honestly, I don't think they are all that useful because most people don't empty them until they are so full that trash is falling out. Better would be to get in the habit of emptying the trash out of the car every time you get out. My trash bucket is right next to where the car is parked (a tip from a UK member on another board). Every time I fill gas, before I go in to pay I look around the vehicle for any trash that needs to be thrown. It's just habit.

When I made mine, I used that thick sew-in interfacing to give it shape. With all those new fusibles, you wouldn't need to do that. Just get a heavy weight one with fusible only on one side.

If he is a saleman, always in his car, then a better choice would be a larger 'snap bag'. Those fast-food leftovers would be too big for the behind-the-seat model. Using the 'snap bag' currently popular, but for a larger bag would be perfect then.

Edited to add my link.

After a bit of searching, here's a simple trash container made by someone on Etsy. I can see this smaller one being useful for when you have a cold or something.

QuiltE 01-16-2012 12:19 PM

ITA ... sure why not?

How large it needs to be? and the style of the car? will somewhat determine what design is do-able!

Another way to "install" is to put a chunk of velcro hooks on it ... that is, if it's going to be put next to some carpeting/upholstery that it can latch on to. Or if you have somewhere to put the smooth side.

For me ... I keep an Extra Large Timmie's cup in the saddle bag on the door for my garbage! It works for the small stuff, and easily pitchable without having to worry about laundry or accidentally tossing the bag out!

ewecansew 01-16-2012 01:04 PM

I think a trash bag in the car is a good thing. My biggest question is 'Why don't they design cars with a trash receptacle?' Behind the seat is crazy as most of the garbage is in the front.

pattypurple 01-16-2012 05:47 PM

This is a link to one I made for my car. I like it because it hangs from the glove box. The buttons keep it inside the glove box door. It was quick and easy to make.

Has anyone checked this out, it looks like the commercial one mentioned here but is free?

SandScraps 01-17-2012 02:56 AM

Lovely idea. Check the TipNut site for all kinds of handy car accessories.

Grammy11 01-17-2012 12:14 PM

I found a pattern on site Make It Do some time back. I do not remember what month or when. You would have to check the archives. I may be able to find it at home if you reply as I am at work right now. I did change it some and put a liner in it and make a strap with ribbon and my husband and I hang it on the center stick. It can be thrown into the laundry when dirty. Just love mine.

My son uses the plastic bags that the newspapers arrive in for his trash containers.

jeanneb52 01-18-2012 05:54 AM

I just helped my great niece make one for her daddy We embroidered his football team logo on the fabric first. He is the only kid on the block with anything so nice. He is a neatnik and loves it.

elm 01-18-2012 06:11 AM

Is there a pattern for a car trash bag?

Dande413 01-18-2012 06:15 AM

I have been looking to make a trash can for my husbands truck also. He wants one that will sit on the floor not hang. Thought of putting a rice bag in the bottom but can't figure out how the thing will stand up. I have scoured the internet and they all hang.
I used my old thread catcher for my van. The rice pocket keeps it in the cubby and is just the right length. I put in a small plastic bag so the fabric never gets soiled.

Ohhh... I reallly like that idea Nana2sew!! THANKS!

I would make a fabric MUZZLE for my one friend's husband to be worn in the car as he is the world's WORST backseat driver. He might not appreciate it...but SHE WOULD!....lol

vickig626 01-18-2012 07:51 AM

Great idea, I made one for my son and he actually does use it LOL

pennylynne 01-18-2012 08:20 AM

Hey Dande413, maybe try using corset stays sewn into the sides to get it to stand up.

quilterj, I made trash bags for the cars of my quilting buddies last year for Christmas and they often refer to how much they use them and how glad they are I made them. And my husband wanted one for him too. So go for it as I'm sure it will be appreciated.

Pat ~
Thank-you so much for the link this is perfect for our vehicles as husband would never tolerate something around the gear shift and we're both pretty fussy about the bits and pieces that seem to always find their way into the drink holders.

Thank you quilterj for starting this thread!

I made one for my husbands truck I embroidered on it " Hall n trash" (Our last name being Hall)

luvTooQuilt 01-18-2012 05:02 PM

I love the idea but I asked Hubby and he told me he'd never put it on his truck- too girlie of an idea I guess..

I don't know about a pattern. All I did was adapt a tote pattern and make it smaller. Then just made 1 small strap and attached it closer together than a normal tote strap.

judys 01-19-2012 06:46 AM

What a great idea! My daughter uses plastic grocery bags hung between the front bucket seats of her van and I've done the same on a trip. But to make a cloth bag that the grocery bag will fit in would be fun and look much nicer and would be so easy to just pull the plastic bag out and replace. I love this idea. Hanging the bag between the seats from the arm rests keeps the bag handy but out of the way. Wouldn't work with a bench seat but sure works good with the bucket seats!

Charleen DiSante 01-19-2012 06:49 AM

Great ideas for the car/truck trashbag. I've got some vinyl fabric that would work nicely. Thanks for sharing.

sewlittle 01-19-2012 06:54 AM

I use a piece of tubing around the "mouth" so it is easy to get into.

amandasgramma 01-19-2012 07:05 AM

I found a pattern for one in a Simplicity or McCalls catalogue at the fabric store. I've never made it -----but they CAN be made and would be so handy!

Mousie 01-20-2012 12:26 PM

think I'll make one for my car! thanks!

QuiltnLady1 01-20-2012 12:48 PM

Thanks for the link -- I will try it and see how it works in my car.
