Trash to treasure

I was about to throw away this empty plastic container (4 lbs of plums from Costco) when it dawned on me it was the perfect size to hold my backing, binding and coordinating FQs for a future baby quilt. I wish now I had saved others I threw away in the past.

Great idea, and cute fabrics!

nhweaver 08-29-2012 09:37 AM

great idea, I am going to save mine in the future!!!

Peckish 08-29-2012 09:37 AM

Ha ha! Love it! I use the plastic containers (very similar to yours) that spinach and lettuce come in!

dunster 08-29-2012 09:43 AM

Great idea, but the problem is - with your fabric looking so cute in the container, will your UFO ever become a FO?

ArtsyOne 08-29-2012 10:17 AM

Thanks for a great tip! I do the same thing - it helps to keep fabrics for specific projects separate so that I don't use it by mistake. Love your fabrics too.

quilt addict 08-29-2012 12:53 PM

Great idea. I saved my first one a few weeks ago before I left on travel. Now to put a project in it.

Jingle 08-29-2012 01:24 PM

Great idea.

thimblebug6000 08-29-2012 02:20 PM

I use the lettuce ones as well and keep my different size scrappy squares in them.

GrannieAnnie 08-29-2012 02:29 PM

I seldom buy groceries in such containers, but they are ideal for small amounts of stuff.

Thanks for the great idea!

craftybear 08-29-2012 02:31 PM

great idea, thanks for sharing with all of us

piepatch 08-29-2012 02:36 PM

I love a good recycle success story! Great idea, and you can see at a glance what you have on hand.

joysewer 08-29-2012 07:13 PM

Great idea!! Those fabrics look yummy!!!

mjsylvstr 08-30-2012 03:21 AM

Love the small ones for crumbs.........

Alice Woodhull 08-30-2012 03:29 AM

I've thrown away a slew of them. I have one or two a week that I get strawberries, cherries, etc. in. I wondered if there was something I could use them for. I've got some in my recycle bin now I'll go rescue before I take it to be recycled.

twinkie 08-30-2012 03:36 AM

How very clever.

I like the 2 gallon zip lock bags that I buy at Dollar Tree for my quilting projects. Plenty of room for fabric and project as it progresses.

Good idea to store projects, easy to see what's inside also.

Wanabee Quiltin 08-30-2012 04:36 AM

You wouldn't think it would hold so much, good idea. Thanks.

SallySaidSew 08-30-2012 04:47 AM

Terrific idea for recycling/repurposing within the home! Thanks for sharing.

ShowMama 08-30-2012 06:01 AM

What a genius you are! I just recently threw away two of those containers that I bought grapes in at Sam's. I held onto them for a few days, thinking there must have been something I could do with them. But when nothing came to mind, I tossed them. I actually never thought about using them in the sewing room. Thanks for the idea.

QuiltnLady1 08-30-2012 06:14 AM

Great idea!!! I have used them as mini-greenhouses to start plants in the spring, but this is very neat. Keeps everything together. Thanks for the tip.

I have a lot of containers from fruit from Sams and Costco. They are great for scraps, and future projects. They also
help keep you organized. Thanks for telling everyone.

Scakes 08-30-2012 07:15 AM

Great tip. Love your fabrics. It will be a lovely quilt.

Geri B 08-30-2012 07:51 AM

good and it has holes for ventilation too......

WisWis 08-30-2012 10:35 AM

What a clever idea-easy to see.

sherryt1258 08-30-2012 02:13 PM

Great idea and I think I will try it for some of my smaller kits that I have waiting to be done so they don't get separated.

captlynhall 08-30-2012 05:13 PM

I use the large ones that lettuce and spinach come in. I like that they are clear so you can see what is in them. They stack well too.

lfstamper 08-30-2012 05:36 PM

I use all my spinach containers from Sam's for various scraps. They have lids, are light weight and stack nicely. Good to recycle.

nstitches4u 08-30-2012 06:38 PM

Great way to recycle.

owlvamp 08-30-2012 06:55 PM

Great idea!

Happy Tails 08-31-2012 03:28 AM

Well damn, I work at Costco and never once thought to do that!! Thanks :)

grann of 6 08-31-2012 03:43 AM

I have been using these clear plastic containers for ages. I prefer them to plastic bags, because I can stack them up and see exactly what is in them. One has all the triangles that come from cutting my jelly roll strips at a 45 degree angle for the strippy quilts, one has scraps from kids quilts, etc. I also keep one beside my sewing machine to put my thread trims in. It is so easy to color code them too, don't need labels because you can clearly see what's in them. Another good thing is that many have air slots in them, so the fabric can "breathe".

Tink's Mom 08-31-2012 03:53 AM

I have a couple in the sewing room to stand up my embroidery threads...I can see which colors I need, plus they don't get dusty or dry out as fast...plus they stack.

hperttula123 08-31-2012 04:19 AM

I started saving the ones I get spinach in and they work great. Now, if I can keep my daughter from using them all on me....lol. :)

rj.neihart 08-31-2012 04:22 AM

Agree - this is a great idea!

alfosa421 08-31-2012 04:33 AM

very good idea and the fabrics are soo cute!!!!

nannya54 08-31-2012 04:50 AM

Great idea. Perfect way to recycle.

#1piecemaker 08-31-2012 04:52 AM

Now, there is an idea! I wish I hadn't thrown mine away now. Geez!!! Thanks for the tip.

fayefromfla 08-31-2012 05:36 AM

I also use these plastic containers. I have the smaller size that had salad mix in them...The older I get the more I rely on see thru containers because I can't remember what is in them..LOL
