traveling foot pedal

Tips needed for a traveling foot pedal. I've tried everything - non-slip drawer liner, rugs, mats sold for this purpose(don't work for me!) My foot pedals are on hardwood floors and I have to chase it around the floor! I've set hubby to thinking of a solution - hope he comes up with something. Any ideas???

Maybe a gel mat would work -- might give enough cushion between the petal and the floor to grip better.

I had the same problem. There is a woodworking man that comes to one of our quilt shows and made some sort of a help for the problem. I'm not sure if the back of the sewing machine doesn't help more than this platform. Needless to say, I have one and use it, but my foot pedal is always up to the corner.

I need an answer to this question, too!

I've done this on rulers, so wonder if it would work on foot pedals? Putting some drops of rubber glue on the bottom, let dry. You wouldn't be gluing it to the floor, just making bottom more "sticky".

I put a box filled with patterns on the floor in front of mine. The foot pedal hasn't moved since then. If you made the wood item like Battle Axe (Marcia?), did with a 1 to 2 inch lip, you would be doing about the same thing. Of course, if you push out with your foot instead of down, then the whole device could move.

I like that wood one. Some more ideas can be found at https://www.quiltingboard.com/main-f...l-t187295.html I like the old mouse pad one. I wonder if something like https://www.harborfreight.com/anti-f...mat-61241.html or https://www.harborfreight.com/4-piec...set-94635.html or other anti-fatique mats could be used. Maybe the mats could be trimmed to fit. I've used yoga mats that I've picked up from thrift stores for mats to set things on. It helps to keep machines from slipping and also protects surfaces from being scratched. If you notice the purple mat under the work stand at https://www.quiltingboard.com/vintag...t270703-5.html you will see that I cut a yoga mat down. Another idea - look at auto floor mats.'

My husband has made a 1/4" plywood template for the floor under my sewing machine that holds my machine pedal in the correct position. The template is a rectangle with a space cut out of the front for my pedal to slide in exactly where I want it. It's a simple and reliable solution. The back of the plywood goes all the way to the wall so it's impossible for my pedal to slide back. I have another one on my Tiara sit-down quilting machine.

I have your solution, because I was plagued with this problem, too. First, measure the space all around your footpedal. For me, it was boxed in by the two sides of the desk and the wall (baseboard) at the back. Go to the Dollar Store and buy a cheap floormat/welcome mat that will completely fill that space. They're around a quarter inch to a half inch thick, and kind of rubbery, something you can easily cut. Once you get it home, trim it if it's too big to fit in there, then place your foot pedal in the most comfortable place for your foot to work it when you are seated correctly to sew. Now trace around the foot pedal onto the mat in that spot, cut that section out (I used my rotary cutter, gasp!), making a hole in the mat exactly the size and shape of your foot pedal. Now plop that pedal down into the hole you made for it and sew to your heart's content, never having to chase it around again!

Another idea is to use some kind of a mat that doesn't slip on your floor, then put a piece of Velcro on the bottom of your pedal and the other piece of the Velcro on the mat and then stick the two pieces of Velcro together. Hope it works.

I have a Martellie non-slip pad for my foot pedal. It seems to do the job better than anything else.

I'm trying to visualize this. Can you put a picture of this up? I would love to see it for the Tiara.

Thanks for all the suggestions. I picked this up at Target today (on sale) and so far so good.

Believe me, I will let you know if my pedal starts traveling again!

Love your idea. Bet I could take this to retreats too since they always seem to have slippery tile floors.

I had the same problem trying to keep the foot pedal in place. Out of sheer frustration one day, I went out to the garage and found a brick. Put it behind the pedal and it's been there for several years now. Works great.

Onebyone 10-15-2018 06:39 AM

I used a bath mat cut to fit under my pedal, the one with the small suction cups. It worked great for slippery laminate flooring.

sewbizgirl 10-15-2018 06:47 AM

There was an old product called "Pedal Stay". It's a mat that you velcro your pedal to and it really does work. I've had mine for years.

I sometimes wrap the foot pedal cord around the table leg and that keeps it from escaping so far and it allows me to retrieve it with my feet.

This is amazing and easy! Thank you

Many in our quilt guild just got the Pedal Mat from Connecting Threads. Slightly tacky on each side, and does a great job holding the pedal in place.

tesspug 10-15-2018 11:24 AM

I wrapped the cord of my petal around the front leg of my sewing table so it was the right length.

Trust me, it won't, especially if your welcome mat completely fills the space and can't move around.

I'm not having a problem now but will save this in case I do. Thanks

So many good solutions here. Here's mine.

I have a slippery hardwood floor. I found a piece of 1 X 3 about four feet long. I put that under the machine with my food pedal attached to it with large rubber band. The far end of the wood bumps into the sofa bottom, so can't go anywhere. My two feet keep the front end where it belongs and I never have to go looking for it.

Maybe instead of a sofa stop, there may be a wall there which would stop it. Two or three feet long might be enough for your situation.

Good luck!

I have always sewn barefoot and have never had a problem with a moving foot control; however, I can understand how that would be annoying.

RedGarnet222 10-16-2018 04:35 PM

I was having knee trouble from sewing so much (arthritis), so I ordered the kneezeaze from Nancy's Notions on line. I am not sure of the spelling of the plastic box like holder that lifts the petal at an angle slightly so my knees are great for much longer periods of sewing. I placed a non skid rug mat under it. You know those rubber mats you cut to size for a room rug? I have had no traveling problem, and I love the Neezease.

Just spotted this one to make. https://so-sew-easy.com/non-slip-sew...oot-pedal-pad/

Well, I tried one brick, then two bricks. Now I have taped two bricks to the floor and it’s better.

I covered a brick with batting, then fabric that matches my ironing board and sewing machine cover!

pocoellie 10-17-2018 04:53 AM

I've heard that 2 rubber bands on the pedal works great, making sort of a funny x. I haven't tried it though, so don't know if it works.
