Laura, what show is that hanging in? I don't remember going to that one. lol. Happy Mother's day, and stay outside the box, your quilts are always fun.

I am taking a needle turn applique class and the fabrics I have chosen are way out of the box for me. In fact at a class someone said.....that doesn't look like Helen at all. I think it is kind of fun, but I am having a little trouble choosing applique fabrics to go with my focus fabric.

Part of life is taking a chance with new things. Quilt making is no exception.

I have plenty of challenge "in the box". I quilt for enjoyment. Making seams join straight and getting true square corners is plenty of challenge for now.

That is so different! I like it.

I guess I am a design as you go person. I recently tried the tube technique for a lap quilt. I did not have a template or triangle to measure by, so I made one. My squares were not quite square. Anyway, here is a photo of the result of my training quilt.

I occasionally will use someones pattern, but like to use my own colors. My real love is making my own designs. Sometimes I will combine traditional blocks mixing and matching til it gets interesting.

I always like a new adventure.

I love your quilt. I always choose my own colors. Love the idea of buying sale fabrics. I don't have an especially large stash..but like to shop it first. You have a great eye for color!

Go both ways

I've made many quilts from patterns and create some quilts as art quilts. Original designs are challenging but the outcomes are surprising and successful so far. I want to pursue more original plans as time goes on. Here's one that was based on the panel fabric being fussy cut to feature the pictures at their best. Everything else was 'fill in' and 'complement'. The custom quilting by Laura Jansen made this a really special work.
I hope the photo fits in the window to view!

I do a lot experimenting, if it does not work out the way I pictured it, I can always use the material for my scrap box. I love to explore.

I go for anything different. I prefer a one of a kind sort of thing. If I try to go with a certain pattern, I usually change something on it. I like my own thing instead of copying someone else. I would rather someone give me clothing & make up my own pattern with them. I do make a lot of memory quilts & all are one of a kind that I just study the clothing before I start the quilt.

I've always chosen my own color scheme as it seems to come easy for me. I'm kinesetic learner i.e. I feel to learn. so color is quick for me. and I have designed my own quilts by merging two or three patterns together or creating on electric quilt. I find that part of quilting the most fun.

I don't have enough experience to have a comfort zone, lol. But I do like pretty much all fabrics, it's the patterns that I have to watch out for. :-)

cathyvv 05-13-2013 04:14 PM

I like it. A lot. Good for you.

caspharm 05-13-2013 04:30 PM

A little of both.

ILoveToQuilt 05-13-2013 04:41 PM

I guess I am a bit of both - otherwise known as a fence sitter! I love geometric quilts (log cabins, chevrons, braids, Chinese coins), yet I want to make landscape and applique quilts, too. For the past few years my color choices have been brights - really bright, almost neon in intensity (to be truthful, sometimes they are neon colors), paired with black or white. DH loves blue, so of course I've made blue on blue on blue on blue....quilts, too. When I have grandkids (not too soon please, kids - I'm too young! I still play with crayons), I want to make an I-Spy quilt. Best description of me would be: half in the box. :-)
