It has been about 20 or so years since I was at Mary Jo's.

My ex-MIL and I use to drive down there about 3-4 times
a year we lived on Lake Norman (in Sherrills Ford).

Of course I have been gone from NC since August 1998.

How far is Gastonia from Durham? Family living there and perhaps I might just be able to make a visit one time.

About 3 1/2 hours. I live a little bit south of Charlotte and my daughter lives in Durham. Takes us about 3 1/2 hours to make the trip. Gastonia might be a smidge further.

I was just there yesterday... the new Targe is indeed open, and Dicks.. good places to leave the husbands!!! I think there is a New Longhorn Steakhouse & an Olive Garden right there also... fabric seemed to be about 2 to 3$$$ cheaper than quilt shops.. did also go to Sew Much Fun, which is the other store someone was talking about.. very nice ladies & they have wonderful fabrics & Bernina machines if you are looking for something for yours..... Have fun ladies, be careful driving, and show us your bounty when you return!!!

The name of the thread store is Long Creek Mills located off of Exit 14 , I -85 South. Get off exit turn right, go to intersection , Franklin Blvd, turn left, take your next left at light,Webb St, store in on your right hand side, after the florist shop. Its small but has the best selection of serger thread, machine emb. thread, stabilizers, disposable bobbins etc. Worth the trip.

Honeynga 10-08-2011 11:38 PM

I want to go....since you have to come through GA don't know why you can't pick me up ! Sounds like an exciting trip and I'm looking forward to hearing about your trip AND your purchases. Have a great time and know that there are a lot of folks wishing to be with you !

teacherbailey 10-09-2011 03:17 AM

If you go through Atlanta, stop at Intown Quilts in Decatur. It's right off the freeway and easy to find....just google it for directions.

Buttonlady 10-09-2011 05:50 AM

I only have 2 words to say about this . . . . . I'M JEALOUS!!!!!!!!!

Mary Jo's is a very very large fabric store in Gastonia NC. I think its about 30,000 sq feet. Its HUGE. The selection is awesome. Seeing how we are driving about 450 miles from fl to NC you know its worth the trip. check out her website

You ladies have been so knowledgeable. Coming to a strange community if you stop and ask 10 different people who do not sew about MJ's, you get this blank look and the words "never heard of it!" Now I know right where to go!

IrishNY 10-09-2011 07:49 AM

I'm going to MJ's next week. Have to be in Charlotte for something else so carved out some time to acquire some fabric! Can't wait!

Its 430 miles from Florida but we have our movies, magazines and snacks. We will be there 3 yes THREE whole days to shop this fantastic store and also go to Long Creek Mills for threads. We have a BIG VAN and each of us have a long list. Let the fun begin.

Like a kid in a candy store. My dear hubby asked if I wanted to stop there when we went to our daughter's in VA this summer. Dumb question? He is so good about looking for certain colored material with me. Of course, I could spend all day there, but don't think he would be quite as accommodating about that long. I know you will have fun.

Dolly's sister 10-09-2011 01:57 PM

I went by there this morning on my way to Ft. Mill, SC just down the road, staying with my son for a week to spoil by grandbabies. I have a gift certificate I got for my birthday to Mary Jo's so will be headed there one day this week. If I go on Tuesday, would be great to meet some others from the the board. Denise, maybe I will find your group by yelling Marco, lol. I lived in Melbourne, FL for 20 years and Plantation, FL before that.

My sister retired in Plantation Florida. She has been there for about 20 years. The 4th one to move there when it was new. She is still there. I visit here every March. I like it there.

Pat

harvsstuff 10-09-2011 03:17 PM

That would be too funny if you yelled Marco and one of us answered Polo. You know its funny but that system does .work for us when one of us gets lost. We will have laundry carts toting our loot in case your there on Tuesday. Hope to see you Denise

grandma sue 10-09-2011 03:49 PM

think you could stop by Oklahoma on your way and get me! I used to go there when I lived in South Carolina. Had a good friend in Charlotte and we loved to go there. But that was over 20 years ago - I'm sure it's much better now. Have fun!

MISHNJIM 10-09-2011 06:08 PM

Hope everyone get's to meet each other on Tuesday...How fun that will be :0)

Sunnye 10-09-2011 06:42 PM

Why have I never heard of this place before?!!!
We just visited our son in Charlotte this weekend and passed the sign for Gastonia! Of course my husband would not like stopping. I'll just have to go without him next time!

COYOTEMAGIC 10-09-2011 07:37 PM

You don't want to be there on a weekend, too many frantic people. Gotta have this, need to get some of that, Sally get your brother from under the tables. George!! Stop rollin those rolls of fabric down the isle!!

Stick to the weekdays. You can breath in the aura of the place before comencing to the fabric fondlin

Dee 10-09-2011 07:55 PM

Have fun. Show pic's of the stash when you come back.

Pat P 10-10-2011 10:26 AM

Just back from Mary Jo's , oh my sensory overload! they had so many marbles-- blenders and batiks in sooooooooooo many colors. Walked in and totally forgot every color of fabric I had back home!! Saw a pattern on their website that was scrappy bowties with a cheddar cheese color background talk about the yellow popping. Didn't do too much damage (little over 100.00) could have spent 500.00 easy. They had one line of fabrics that looked like tiny honeycomb, got two different colors. Will take pictures when I get home and post. Made it to Long Creek Mills. Drove by it the first time its a gray bldg on Webb St. Very friendly people. DH was fascinated. Gave us free thread and scissors for thread clipping. Embroidery thread heaven as well as long arm thread. Throw in serger and the kitchen sink on everything else! Clerks said Sat. at MJ"S was a madhouse, thru the week probably better. No sales of any kind on fabric, they did have Michael Miller, Kaffee Fassett and Amy Butler to name a few. Many fabrics show in Quilt mags.

harvsstuff 10-12-2011 04:36 PM

We were at Mary Jo's Monday at 3 pm for a couple of hrs and then back tuesday when it opened until around 3 and then to Long Creek Mills. Lets just say I spent boogo bucks 4 figures. We had a great time. My friends found things they didn't even know they needed. We are already planning to go back in the spring.

Dolly's sister 10-12-2011 04:51 PM

The rain kept me away Tuesday. Might make it there tomorrow. Hope I find things I didn't know I needed. Guess I don't have to yell Marco when I'm there. Glad u guys have a safe trip home.

dragonfly south 10-12-2011 04:55 PM

Enjoy ladies! I live in SC and try to make it to Mary Jos at least twice a year... they are so special and helpful and you can get on their website and "shop ahead". First time I went, I forgot to bring a DETAILED list and went into shock... bought stuff I couldn't live without and stuff I forgot until I got home. Oh well, was fantastic fun anyway! Have fun.
