Trust Issues

I have trust issues -

I do not trust fabric to behave
I do not trust measurements on pre-cuts to be exactly what I expect
I do not trust that there will be at least the number of pins stated in the package
I do not trust the directions on the pattern will be accurate

Anyone else?

Tartan 05-26-2015 11:25 AM

I'm a belt AND suspenders type person myself. I guess I have trust issues also since I like to have a backup plan.:D

Judith1005 05-26-2015 11:37 AM

Isn't that what life is all about....Trust that things will go exactly they way they are meant to be. That their is a greater plan. I believe that in quilting also. That their is always a chance to roll with the challenges that present themselves. It leaves you room to make it your original. In any case, don't sweat the small stuff. :)

k_jupiter 05-26-2015 11:42 AM

I do not trust fabric to behave - I am the master of my fabric.
I do not trust measurements on pre-cuts to be exactly what I expect - I make my own cuts.
I do not trust that there will be at least the number of pins stated in the package. - Never can have too many pins, buy two packages.
I do not trust the directions on the pattern will be accurate. - "First you cut out 2,374 triangles and sew them into HSTs." Throw those directions OUT and figure it out yourself.

Rely upon yourself and see if the trust issues go away. tim in sanjose

I am not untrusting of fabric or patterns. I have awesome trust in my skills and my wits.

Latrinka 05-26-2015 12:09 PM

I just pray!

ManiacQuilter2 05-26-2015 12:14 PM

I am dealing with donated scraps all the time so I always have a backup plan b or c or d....

Onebyone 05-26-2015 01:14 PM

I just dive in and worry about the problem as it occurs. After many dives I know how to avoid them all.

I wash my fabric in hot water and dry in hot dryer. I starch and iron it to death before cutting. That fabric is not stretching.
I solved the inaccurate cut problem by buying a Go and the dies I need for just about any quilt pattern.
If I think a package of something is the exact amount I need, I buy two.
I check online for any corrections to patterns, there is always a correction if the pattern is wrong.

tessagin 05-26-2015 01:18 PM

I go with what I can see, feel, and a free pattern and my own yardage. That's my plan I've learned from my past to trust.

My two basic rules:
1. Don't sweat the small stuff
2. It's all small stuff.

I try to roll with the punches.

Monroe 05-26-2015 03:38 PM

I don't trust fabrics not to bleed- so I wash and dry them before cutting.
I don't trust batiks to be thoroughly washed- so I wash them with Retayne and dry them before cutting.
I don't trust the marks on my cutting mat to be accurate- so I use a ruler.
I don't trust myself not to make mistakes, esp at the end of the day- so I go slowly and enjoy the process of sewing.

Elise1 05-26-2015 03:50 PM

I have never come across a problem I couldn't figure out a solution for.

Trust yourself to work out solutions to your problems.

I have full faith and trust in my own abilities to adapt to any situation at all when it comes to the sport of quilting. That's all that matters as far as I'm concerned.

AnnEliz 05-26-2015 04:07 PM

I agree with you Onebyone---ha ha ha ---that's just about exactly what I do. It has to be perfect or as close as possible.

sewbeadit 05-26-2015 04:23 PM

I never thought about trusting stuff..I never follow the recipe, I always add or take away. I never follow the pattern just get the gist of it and make it my own.
When I cut something wrong ( which is often) there is always a plan B and yes "don't sweat the small stuff". Some mistakes come out beautiful.

Angel Bear 05-26-2015 06:54 PM

I never trust that I'm going to have enough of any fabric, so I always buy extra! ;)

marymay 05-27-2015 02:48 AM

AMEN to this.

I have faith in Murphys Law.."what ever can go wrong, will go wrong". So I just wait for it to happen and if it doesn't, do the happy dance.:)

I have learned to trust in my nearly 74 years of life experience, and transfer it into my quilting. I have had a life changing health issue this past year, so am having trouble with TRUST in the powers that direct our life. But I have learned as others have said, life is short and everything is just small stuff. Quilting is my refuge and my sanity. I just go with the flow, and know that any glitches, whether in life or quilting, make me a better and stronger person. If the fabric bleeds, or there is not enough fabric, or the precut is wonky, I just work it into the plan and march forward. Sew what!?!?!??!

maminstl 05-27-2015 04:27 AM

I don't trust that precuts will be right, so try to remember to NOT pick out a pattern that requires too much precision when I do use them.
I do trust that something will be wrong in most every quilt I make, and also trust that no one will know it except me!

Bubbie 05-27-2015 04:59 AM

TRUST ISSUES - have you been talking to my DD. She says I just "Wing It", everyday. But I know I have a backup plan. So my trust issues must be something else, because most of my backup plans have backup plans.

Yooper32 05-27-2015 05:04 AM

I would rather trust and take my chances, than doubt and be validated, or not.

GingerK 05-27-2015 05:06 AM

I have learned that the only thing I can completely trust is that nothing will ever go 100% according to plan. Whether it is quilting, cooking, traveling, or the Big One--LIFE, I try to plan for the flies in the ointment.

SueSew 05-27-2015 05:17 AM

What a great topic - love the replies! My two faves are 'I trust I will make mistakes and no one will notice it but me' and 'I trust I will never have enough fabric for a project so buy more!'

It's unfortunate that we can't count on purchasing product according to accurate weights and measures, but I am sure it were ever thus...right back to Biblical days there were folks who just couldn't give a buyer 'full measure'.

But those of us who want accuracy in what we ourselves do, do it differently. Analytical measurements using scientific instrumentation are taken in multiples and averaged. Carpenters and quilters measure at least twice before we cut, and we always use the same ruler system or check that they match up exactly.

Just a couple parting thoughts about bad cuts: maybe if they used that GO thing the sellers of pre-cuts could be more accurate :) and maybe if they got a bigger cutting table, a good ruler and a sharp rotary cutter my LQS could actually cut a straight yard of fabric :)

I do not trust that I will have sufficient fabric to finish the quilt pattern and size

I really have enjoyed this topic and the responses this morning, great ones!!

My trust issues lately are around being able to function/ find anything after I move next month -- I've been in this place over 7 years, the longest in one spot for over 25 years.
And in my body -- which has often let me down in the past 6-7 years;
and the things my mother does in my house -----

She's 90 now, so there's an excuse and a reason I suppose, but when I go to a drawer to find my new checks and discover it already packed for the move next month -- after I TOLD her 3x I would need access to the things in it, do NOT pack it yet, and it's the fourth time this week I can't find something I need to still live before the move 5 weeks away, IT MAKES ME CRAZY!!

Yes, I appreciate that she wants to help. Yes I am more than grateful she is still with me. Yes, it's amazing she is able to still drive over from her own apartment to do these things with/for me. Still it's a stressful time and the trust issues are NOT helping!!!:D :D

Maybe I'm a fool, but I don't worry about any of that stuff. It's about a quilt!!!!! That fact that someone took the time to make it for you makes it beautiful no matter what it looks like.

roserips 05-27-2015 09:16 AM

Sounds to me like you have a lot of issues, sit back breath, relax, it will all work out in time. Now throw the patternt out and create your own quilts. Follow the pictures they work great and if they don't use pictures do something else. I have decided that I really enjoy doing my own thing with out patterns or directions and just enjoy the process, if you don't like it rip it out and do something else.

Pennyhal 05-27-2015 09:51 AM

I don't trust that a fabric that I love will still be there the next time I visit the store.

maminstl 05-27-2015 11:06 AM

But I have learned to trust that there will always be more fabric to buy, just as good if not better than the "one that got away"

bj 05-27-2015 02:37 PM

Sometimes I don't trust a fabric to play nicely with others, and sometimes they don't and I have to buy more...poor me. Oh wait! Maybe I just wanted the naughty fabric for my stash...yea me!

Sheilz 05-27-2015 03:19 PM

My cup is half full ....I don't have trust issues.......if things aren't what I hope them to be I just work around it. No point in getting in a tiz over something that in the greater scheme of things isn't really that important .

Lori S 05-27-2015 06:55 PM

I think you and I have been I the "been burnt" maybe once.... maybe more than once , but enough so we proceed with caution, and use our experiences to guide us.

Pretty much what Lori S. said.

I have had enough "bad" experiences with fabric to do "preventive maintenance" before cutting it - and with patterns and templates to know that sometimes they do not fit together "as printed."

I have a lot more confidence in myself now than when I started. Once upon a time - if it did not fit together properly - I thought it was me that had goofed - now - it may or may not be me - I check the patterns now! Sometimes it IS the pattern that is off!

mom-6 05-28-2015 07:20 AM

I trust that eventually I will figure out a way to make it work, no matter how different it is from my original plan!

borntoquilt 05-28-2015 07:25 AM

Nothing to do with Quilting issues but I NEVER trust anybody who says TRUST ME !!!!!
