The natural disasters that have occurred in Japan reminded me of the second original quilt design I ever made: the “Tsunami”. I had intended on making it in red on a black background, but never got around to finishing it. The idea of doing it in blues to create a variegated effect occurred to me during my last trip to a quilt shop and had picked out a few blue batiks because I wanted to do “something in blue” for a quilt.
I'm not sure if the varigated idea translates well with these design images. It kind of helps if you step back and look at it. Maybe it just needs to be made into an actual quilt to get the full effect? I ended up making two blue color variations: one in a true blue and the other a more turquoise-ish. I’m kind of conflicted on the fabric choices. I had first thought of doing the blues with watercolor/marble blenders to keep with the water theme, but I already have 3 projects in mind either involving mottled fabrics or some sort of blender fabrics. So I was thinking of maybe stepping outside the box and finding some regular batiks to work with. But then I’m thinking they might not tie in as well with the water aspect I had in mind. |
I really like the way the second one sparkles :D:D:D

SO beautiful. It makes me take second and third looks. Thanks for shareing.

Those are really cool designs, I can't wait to see what ya go with!
They are both beautiful. I think the darker one is more calming, but Amma is right about the second one.
I wouldn't want to choose between them! |
cool design!
They are both so cool looking. Can't wait to see the real thing.
WOW for both quilts. They are amazing, so lovely
i prefer the turquoise also...seems more "watery" to me
and is incomplete opposition to "tsunami" as i think of quiet mediterranean waters... of course it could just be that being native american i prefer turquoise lol |
Very lovely pattern, I was immediately hooked on the turquoise.
Beautiful design and I like the 2nd one too!
I like them both. The blue batiks can represent deep water. Colors get either very dark or very bright in deep water. Just my thoughts.
It is going to be beautiful!! I like them both!
I like the second one best, as I think it looks more like water, also. The first one looks more like whitewater waves, like deep water. Both are really beautiful! Nice work!
I like the coloring in the 2nd better. Just a warning - your snail's trail design is fairly difficult to sew accurately. You may want to paper piece the blocks.
Love your pattern. I like both of them but the second one really catches my eye.
like them both........but would do number 2

No one has really told me if I should go with the watercolor batiks or regular batiks.
What a beautiful design! Why not make a sample block of different fabrics before you decide?
both are lovely
The second one really looks like water to me. Very pretty, either one.
Thank you for sharing. They are absolutely gorgeous.
I love the design. I think you couldn't go wrong any way you chose to interpret it. I really think as long as you had strong contrast between the shapes you would have a winner. I would have a stonger opionion if I could see the actual fabrics, be sure and keep us posted.
Both are beautiful, but the 2nd one calls to me. Your design is fantastic.
I prefer the turquoise.....it seems to work better with the black to me. Please post pics when you finish the quilt...can't wait to see it!

2nd one is really pretty!!!
Both are pretty, but would pick #2. Re Batik's - I think which ever one you choose is going to be right, because your heart is in the right place and that is what I have found...
I like the blues, especially with whitecaps.
I love both quilts
I like them both, but I think the tourquoise one pops a little more.
I think I'm going to go with the watercolor fabrics. So what if I already have a few other projects with watercolor fabrics for blenders? Its going to look fantastic!
I like the second one. Looks more like the actual color of water.

I like the 2nd one, too. Sparkle is a good description. I hope you have or can find fabrics that work like the design!
Beautiful - love the bold colors
Really like that second colorway
