Have y'all gotten the latest newsletter from the Missouri Star Quilt Co. ?
They've got their Tumbler template on sale for $3.95. I hate to admit it, but when it first came out, just a very short while ago, I watched their tute and sent for one right away. It was $8.95 plus S&H. Grrr. That makes me so mad at myself! But the upside is that, regardless of the price, I love it anyhow. You can zip through a Tumbler quilt very quickly, using any kind of print or other fabrics, even scrappy and it looks great. I've had a lot of fun with it. It makes an adorable quilt or table runner. I don't work for them believe me, I just love their stuff, and their tutorials. 8-)

I saw that today too. But unfortunately, I cannot buy it yet because I am on a very tight budget right now. I have always wanted the tumbler template. Sigh, one day.

You know what you do? Get a spring mix salad container lid or the plastic from a "Tidy Cat" bucket and cut your own.

FREE.

(that's what i did.)

Ahaa! There is always a solution to any dilemma.

Rebecca VLQ 04-15-2011 04:05 PM

^^^The tidy cat...get the one that is the milky-colored plastic that is kinda like a milk jug, not the yellow one. You can TOTALLY see through it.

:D

SundarKoyal 04-15-2011 04:23 PM

That's a really good tip. Thanks!

That means that I would have to go get a cat first

nativetexan 04-15-2011 04:36 PM

That would NOT be cheaper than buying the template. I, myself, have a cat. I should start saving all the sides to send to people.

Totally off topic, but speaking of corkboard - I watched a video the other day where a lady had a tile of cork next to her sewing machine with a clover iron on it to press small seams while she was piecing. Thought it was a great idea!

I'm clueless.... what's a "Tumbler Template"? Is that a template for Tumbling Blocks?

Bev 04-15-2011 05:47 PM

It's just a plastic template in the shape of a "tumbler" you know, a glass that's small at the bottom and wider at the top. Sort of very large thimble shaped.

Bev 04-15-2011 05:54 PM

I knew as soon as I had written my post that a lot of members would talk about making one yourself. And I really have made quite a few templates in my time. But I just love buying the nice thick ones that last for many years and don't get worn at the edges or cut easily by the rotary blade. I'm also a bit of a ruler nut. There's just no hope for me. I collect rulers as though they were going to disappear from the stores any day now. I agree there's nothing more economical than making one yourself. But I still love this tumbler template. Sorry ... I don't mean to be argumentative. 8-)

I love "real" rulers too...but if you can't get one, a stand in is GREAT to feed the need! :D

I actually agree with you, now that I think about it. Because I am not sure that i could make one that is as accurate. I have tried making templates before but they never quite turned out as well as the thicker store bought ones, and usually they did not last as long either. Making my own might be a very temporary fix, but like you... I think I will hold off and buy the template when I can get one cheap and have a few bucks on me.

JanetWall 04-15-2011 06:55 PM

I ordered one today.

sueisallaboutquilts 04-15-2011 06:56 PM

I saw it today but didn't buy it. I'm tired of buying templates and rulers!!
But it doesn't stop me sometimes lol

Love the cat comment, haha, too funny! :D:D

OH OK :D

lovestosew 04-15-2011 07:39 PM

I got their newsletter too, and ordered it and some charm packs. Can't wait to get it.

quilty 69 04-16-2011 05:25 AM

Do they have a web site I could order the tumbler template from?

lovestosew 04-16-2011 06:57 AM

Here it is. Unfortunately it is not on sale anymore. It was one of their daily deals.

Why not use the wide, bottom, edge of a dresden plate template, or one of the other stack and whack type templates. The 30degree simpli-ez works well for a charm square. Just align the bottom line that fits, on mine it is the 8.5 mark and cut the excess. Just remember to cut all patches right side up, you are going to reverse them when you sew. One template, many applications. The stack and whack, 15 degree template works real good for 3" strips just in case you want to make a mini tumbler quilt.

But then I'd have to have the Dresden Plate template, or one of the others you mention. Hmmm, maybe that's not such a bad idea.

Thank you, I was just thinking that. But I think a cat would scare my greyhounds.

Does anyone have the link for the tumbler Template - I tried looking it up but there were hundreds of pages to sort through

Linda - K. 04-16-2011 09:16 AM

I missed the sale but ordered it anyway as I've been looking for this template. There is a 3" template page I found yesterday on quilterscache.com but I like the 5" better--the quilt will go faster and I'm always looking for faster to do anything! I'm lazy!

dotski 04-16-2011 10:49 AM

i buy a sheet of plexy glass from lowes n take it to the glass cutter to make ALL my templates. much cheapr and you get lots from a sheet.

BizyStitches 04-16-2011 11:34 AM

If any of you that are looking for the 'tumbler' and happen to have the Accuquilt GO cutter they have that die in 2 sizes. I loved making a tumbler lap quilt. They are fun and easy to make. Enjoy

Our local Hardware store will also cut templates.

Iamquilter 04-16-2011 11:47 AM

I have an AccuCut tumbler. PM if interested.

I'm not sure because I get confused between Accuquilt and AccuCut, but I think the AccuCut dies are for paper. Is that right? I have the AccuQuilt, I don't do scrapbooking only sewing.

Eliebelle 04-16-2011 02:14 PM

I just ordered one - price was back to $8.95 BUT I have been looking for one FOREVER!!! Unfortunately, I ordered fabric too, so DH will be wondering once again why I need more. Oh well.

Carol W 04-16-2011 02:33 PM

I would like to try the tumbler block. Another project on my to do list!!

Go ahead and try one or two. You'll see how fast you can fly through a whole bunch of them. I use my large scraps and fold them over and just cut two tumblers at a time because I like a scrappy look to my quilts. It helps reduce the scrap pile! Of course you DO end up with smaller scraps, sigh ....
I make the very simplest quilt with them. No sashing, just one simple border and the binding, then tie or you could handquilt. With the handquilting I would do a primitive style using perle cotton. Yum-yum. Beautiful!

Jammin' Jane 04-16-2011 09:58 PM

What a fun, fast quilt! Thanks for sharing!

Chantel41 04-16-2011 10:14 PM

Thanks so much for giving me an idea of what to do with all the cat litter buckets! (I have six persian cats) I used to store my scraps in them. This is better!

brushandthimble 04-17-2011 04:52 AM

I have a small tumbler template and a WIP, charm scrappy tumbler quilt. I need 4" squares so my template must be about 3.5 inches. I layer about 4 -5 fabrics and cut them out. Place a small matt on top of a larger one, and the smaill one will turn, just like a rotating cutting mat.

Speaking of Accuquilt, anyone have the drunkard path 7" template they would like to sell?

I have a couple you can have,(cats,not lids) :)

MissQuilter 04-17-2011 06:16 AM

I traced one out of a magazine before Christmas and made tumbler table runners. Remember when we used cardboard, replaced when worn out, then the template plastic was wonderful, and of course old X-ray film if you could get your hands on it. Lids and plates for circles???? Making up patterns, not buying them all???? Quilting does not HAVE to always be expensive!!!!!

I sure DO remember all of those things and more!! And I still use some of them. I have a whole collection of lids in different sizes that I use for circles. I also used to cut templates out of old oatmeal lids. They lasted longest of all, I think. I tried old exray film, but found it to be too thin. When I first started quilting I did what my mom had always done, and used all the things she used to use. She also used old stuff like towels and worn blankets in place of batting. And she never used a pattern in her life. She'd get a kick out of all the patterns used today.
But I know my mom would also love all the wonderful things we have today to make quilting more pleasurable. Like heavy duty plastic templates and rulers. Things that hardly ever wear out and make your quiltmaking faster and more fun. My mom made quilts just because we needed them to keep us warm. She didn't make them just for the pleasure it gave her. Store bought blankets cost too much for a big family to be able to afford. Now, more often, we make quilts to fill a need that we have, to be creative and to share our creativity with family and friends.
