Turn The Fabric Backwards
1 Attachment(s)
Many years ago someone said on television if you don't like the front of the fabric, turn it over. Not too long after that, I was making a wall hanging of a puppy and needed something for the beach sand. I took the fabric I'd used to make the doggie bones, and turned it over, and by gosh, it was perfect.
Have you ever used the other side? |
As the saying goes, you paid for both sides so you get to choose which side you use. That definitely cut down on the scrap factor. Wonder how long you would of searched for mottled brown fabric?
I sure have!!! Just a couple of weeks ago I was using a fabric for back ground of a doggie quilt I am making for my granddaughter and ran out-back to the quilt shop and they were out of the shade I needed. Bought the next shade up and came home and turned it over and it matched pretty good. So I think we have to be inventive with our fabrics (right or wrong side!) BTW-your dog wall hanging is adorable.
I believe someone called it the other side. Maybe Nancy?
I have! and it was just what I needed
Yes, I have many years ago I needed a shade of mauve lighter than what I had already used in a quilt. Happened to look down at a scrap turned to the "wrong side" and it was the shade I needed.

i do it all the time... i was short of some lights to make some HSTs, so just used the backs... i'll bet you can't spot them. And the sky in my avatar quilt has some blues turned over

Yup! And sometimes I have even done it on purpose!

I do use the other side, sometimes by accident. Your doggie is cute and that fabric Is perfect for the sand.
Frequently!
The wrong side of fabric is especially helpful when looking to replace fabric in vintage and antique quilts. I have used the wrong side in quilting projects when it is just the right shade.
I paid for both sides. I do it most often to get more neutrals.
Yes, definitely!
It is so ingrained in me to find and use the right side that I study both sides to make sure it is the right side. I learned to make clothing and made those for years. I need to try and get over that because I only make quilts now. Old habits are hard to break.
I don't do it a lot but sometimes I do. I made a lighter colored baby quilt and I had the cutest patterned print for backing but it was brighter primary colors...so I flipped it and it matched perfectly. I also made a gradation quilt and flipped all the colors over and included the backside in the gradation. Worked perfectly and I didn't struggle with color wheel when purchasing all the fabric..
super cute quilt! |
I've used the wrong side of the fabric for the right side on occasion when it was what I needed.

interestingly, i was pin basting this old, thin, donated top this evening, and there was this one, crooked, backwards block LOL

My sister and I have both (at different times) accidentally sewn double layers of some piece to one of another. Now that is hard to explain. I will have to put it down to my age. :)
Cute! And turning the fabric over gives you just the same texture! Using the other side helps increase the "scrap factor" in some of my multi-fabric projects.

That was Georgia Bonesteel who had a TV show called "Lap Quilting" back in the 1970s. She suggested getting more variety in a scrap quilt that way.

I do that a lot, works great. Glad you discovered it.
I've done it too.
Boston, your doggy quilt is adorable! :) |
Yes I have too.
I've done it by accident too. Sometimes it hard to tell which side is up. Found I'd put one on backwards but had already incorporated it into the quilt so decided to leave it since I hadn't seen it till long afterwards I doubt anyone else would notice it either.
You bet I do.
I often tell my customers that quilters get a double deal - because we use both sides of the fabric!
I cut two red fabric pieces too small for the place in a block. Looking around I spotted some Xmas charms and
found my replacements right away. I turned some snowflakes and flipped to the back and there was "grunge" fabric . Not the first time but the fastest !! |
Yes I do use the backs sometimes. Our officers challenge a couple of years ago involved a piece of ugly fabric. we were to make a wall hanging using it. We had to use at least half of it. I can't remember what the theme was. I was accused of not using enough of the ugly fabric. I had actually used almost all of it. I made a garden and the back was a nice green color. I also fussy cut some of the flowers on the front. I won for the best wall hanging and also the prize for most unique use of the fabric.
Yup...on several occasions when I needed something light(er) and maybe a time or two when I hadn’t plan to use the the other side but didn’t catch it until it was too late to rip it out. LOL
All the time. Sometimes I just want a muted version of the front. I did pay for both sides of the fabric so I'm going to use them both. LOL
Love the Puppy at the Beach. |
I do it fairly frequently with batiks, sometimes the backside is just the perfect tone.
