Two fabric quilts

I'm looking for quilt patters that use just two fabrics. Any suggestions?

Treasureit 05-22-2013 07:19 AM

This website has tons of patterns....I know I have seen some for 2 colors

I did a "Hole in the Barn Door" with Red and Gold once. Looks pretty good. I think "Boxed Squares" would lend itself well to 2 colors as well.

pinwheels and stars look great in two colors.

drunkard's path, storm at sea, winding ways, hunter's star

Here is a Google images search to get the ideas flowing.

My favorite is always the round one called Vortex, but I need about 25 more years experience before I try it!

Thanks for all the suggestions. I'm going to attempt a disappearing 4 patch with a twist. Not sure how well that will go, since you need a steady hand to cut it apart and mine are anything but...........

Dear Jane and Sentimental Stitches did "Just Takes Two". It was a BOM offered not long ago. The blocks were all in the public domain, but they'd resized them a little. But, all the blocks were made with just two colors - in the BOM it was red and white. The blocks are for sale, but you could look at all the completed blocks to get ideas.

Bowtie -

You can easily change the size; makes great baby quilt.

I have a lovely two fabric pattern that I found on a free online site. It is at home of course and I am at the office. It was designed as a mystery quilt and is in four steps. I put it together in one day. It is sitting on my UFO pile waiting for quilting. I will find the pattern and post the link to it tomorrow and also PM the link to you. Not difficult and fun.

It depends on the look you are going for. A simple Irish Chain is always beautiful. The a nine patch with a snowball has become my personal favorite. Easy to do and looks great!!

I love "Drunkards Path," and have always wanted to do it in red and white.

I have found the TWISTERS patterns really look beautiful when you use only two colors................the blocks really POP. I have the larger Twister ruler...........and the first book............and have made 2 baby quilts and a throw with this - all using only two fabrics - one in each of the main colors.

MargeD 05-23-2013 08:26 AM

I love two color quilts, they are so wonderfully graphic and stand the test of time. Irish chain is a great two-color quilt, as well as Jacob's Ladder, but check quilterscache.com, they have any number of blocks that would make great two-color quilts.

snoball is good for baby quilts --with this pattern you can also feature a nice print

I've always wanted to make a 2 color snail's trail. I own a red & white double irish chain. But the ones posted here are all wonderful!

I did as well. It looks relatively easy with snowballs and 9 patches. Two color quilts are so dramatic.

I love this board! I found some beautiful royal blue and white wool while cleaning out my stash and wondered about a quilt pattern for 2 fabrics. I loved that my question was asked, and I got such wonderful ideas. Thanks!!!!

San Luis 05-24-2013 03:47 PM

Oh, my, what beautiful, imaginative quilts on this site--I'm going to need 3 more lifetimes.

OK this is the pattern that I have decided on, and my impulse fabric that I could not live without. (and I know that I have two dangling participle is that sentence.) ;-) It's called a disappearing 4 patch, with a twist. I started with 6 1/2 squares and ended with a 10 1/2 inch block. It's very tricky and takes a steady hand and a lot of precision to dissect the 4 patch. It might take me years to finish it, but I love it. This might be one quilt that I have to keep.

Holy Cow, that site is awesome.

Pepita 05-24-2013 11:34 PM

Stack and wack quilts, you would use a large print for that and add another for the border, or settings. Any of the red/white, blue/white etc. quilts would work well.

I agree that this is a great pattern. I actually bought this pattern and have been looking for a while--for the perfect mini flower print fabric to go with off-white --to make this quilt. My plans are to work at this at a retreat I am going to this Fall.
