When you tie a quilt, what do you use to tie with...embroidery thread, crochet thread, yarn or ribbon?
I think it is what ever you want. The tied ones that I have seen are mostly tied with yarn.
I've tied with embroidery floss, crochet thread and yarn. It just depended on what I had on hand at the moment.
There are some warnings about using yarn? on baby quilts. Something about it coming apart and babies eating it. I think it was yarn. Do a "search" on the topic and you will find lots of info.
I don't tie quilts but I prefer the look of embroidery thread. |
yarn stays put. i tried embroidery thread on a king size and had to take them all out and use yarn. others have luck, I didn't.
Pearl cotton is best.
I use crochet thread.
perle cotton
it's strong- 100% cotton- comes in hundredes of colors- has been used for a long long time. |
Granny always used yarn. I use embroidry floss
Most times I use Perle Cotton thread, size 8
I use three strands of embroidery floss. Comes in soooo many colors.
Same here...mostly yarn because it was on hand. Yarn seems to hold very well.

Perle cotton and tie a square knot - the ties will still be there when the quilt is worn out.
I have tied biscuit quilts and comforters using doubled crochet thread and have used six strands of DMC. The only things I tie, don't like my quilts tied.

I use embroidery thread because of the choice of colors and I already have it on hand.
I use the crosheen type of crochet thread. It's a little thicker but tied in a square knot it stays in place. In fact, I saw my nephew dragging around a quilt I tied for him when he was about 4yo. He's 26 now! Says he likes how soft it is and took it with him when he married in May!

I use crochet thread.
I've never tied a quilt, but Hospice gave my dad a tied cheater cloth quilt and as he died of Alzheimers, he loved to feel the knots within the quilt. So tied quilts will always have a special place for me. Sorry to interrupt this thread with emotions, but I was moved

Embroidery thread
I always use six strands of embroidery floss tied in a surgeons knot.
I use yarn as I have a bunch of it and it has always served me well. :-D

Funny you should ask...I just tied a quilt! I 'googled' it, and found many of the same answers you are getting here. I used embroidery thread (because of the color selection) and used the 'surgeons knot'. When all I did was tie quilts I used a square knot, and sometimes they would loosen. I also put a tiny drop of Fray Check on each knot in hopes they will stay put! Good luck...
I used Perle cotton and the 'surgeon' knot on two quilts for my granddaughters. They have been used hard and laundered many times and remain tight.
I still have the first quilt I made and it is tied with yarn. he quit is falling apart from age and use but the yarn is in great shape.
I tie all my quilts here..as I like the feel much better then the others for sleeping under. I have always used yarn as my grandma did. The quilts I have that she has made for me, the one is 40 years old and the yarn is still there (the yarn is lasting much longer then the fabric is). So now the quilt is on display only..not to be used on the beds.
I usually use crochet cotton.
I always tie with yarn because that is what I have lots of.
I learned a long time ago to tie with 2 thin strings of wool yarn - it doesn't come undone and if one breaks you still have the other and it makes a cool knot.
What is a biscuit quilt?
I like using embroidery thread; normally I use the varigated one with the same color scheme as my quilt.
wE USE EMBROIDERY THREAD BUT THE OLD OBES WE HAVE FROM MY SOUSES GRANDMOTHER WERE TIED WITH YARN
I used to tie with yard, then went to embroidery thread, then went to crochet thread. I especially tie when I am giving a quilt to a man, graduation gift, some baby quilts, quilts for camping, quilts that I know will be washed alot and maybe not taken care of - I have some sons and nephews that I have found out are rough on quilts.
i've gone back to yarn or floss. i tried ribbon for the "pretty" factor, but it tends to come untied unless you aggressively knot it-and then it's not so "pretty".
Please help me with tying a quilt with ribbon. What do I do how do I sew it? Any help you can give me will be greatly appreciated. I am using very thin ribbon. Thanks

To tie a quilt with any ribbon will require a needle with a very large eye. The side you want the ends to show on will be up. Put your needle down through the quilt, then up again less then 1/2" away, then down again through the first hole, then up again. Cut the two ends to the length you want, then tie them. This thread describes the surgeon's knot, which I have not used before, but sounds great. If you want the look of ties with ribbon but not to actually tie with ribbon, you can sew the ribbon pieces to the quilt securely by hand or machine, then tie the ends as you wish. Hope this helps. |
