I made a scrap quilt using a variety of fabrics: calico, juvenile, solids, etc. and found out that using too much variety made an ugly quilt. I thought of adding colorful sashing and borders to help solidify the quilt. What do you think might help save this ugly quilt?

It would be easier to comment if we had a picture of it to look at. Would you be able to post a picture?

stephaniequeen 05-08-2011 02:54 PM

I am trying to upload two pictures of this poor ugly duckling.

wishfulthinking 05-08-2011 03:00 PM

I bet it isn't as ugly as you think. Looking forward to the photo.

wishfulthinking 05-08-2011 03:02 PM

We must have been posting at the same time as your photos just popped up. And I don't think it is ugly. Maybe just the right sashing, one of the main fabics perhaps? I don't feel qualified to comment as I am so new at this, but look forward to the comments of others.

That is a true scrappy quilt and it will look super fine when finished. My girlfriend makes these and they are great.
Keep going, it is looking good.

Sadiemae 05-08-2011 03:30 PM

Everyone has their own personal preferences. Depending on the rest of your blocks, there seems to be a red and a blue that are in most of your blocks. I would choose one of these two colors to sash with. I like a lot of color which usually influences my decision, so go with your preferences and it will be right.

Lori S 05-08-2011 03:40 PM

I don' t think I would do a sashing, as it makes each block a focal point. I think these would look best blended into each other, and give it the overall look of just scrappy.

quiltlonger 05-08-2011 03:47 PM

I think it's a beautiful I Spy quilt in the making: a child would be kept very busy learning from it colors, finding big bird, counting the animals, ect...

Fabaddict 05-08-2011 03:50 PM

now that is a true scrap quilt. BEAUTIFUL

sueisallaboutquilts 05-08-2011 03:58 PM

I love it!! Nothing ugly about it! :D:D
Just a great scrappy !!!

WinSumLsSm 05-08-2011 04:03 PM

Honey you are being too hard on yourself... some of us LOVE scrappies... me being one of them...

I agree no sashing. I also see a secondary pattern forming where the blocks join. Keep going I don't think it is ugly either.

yonnikka 05-08-2011 04:17 PM

**How many blocks have you completed?
**Do you have more of the same fabrics already used for these "ugly blocks"?
**Are you willing to take these blocks apart (into the 4 unit squares)?

If your answers are "YES" then re-combine putting 2 of the pink V shape (Chevron) together/pairing with 2 Yellow V shape. Pair the Green Plaid V shapes with the Grey, etc. In other words, SIMPLIFY the blocks by eliminating some colors and giving greater CONTROL over the colors included.

Or try putting all the small blocks 'On Point.'

SuziC 05-08-2011 05:07 PM

I would keep going. You will be surprised how great it looks once it's all together

JUNEC 05-08-2011 05:10 PM

I love it

PJisChaos 05-08-2011 05:12 PM

I agree with everyone else here, it's not ugly at all! The worst word I could possible imagine is "busy". I like it, would be perfect for a toddler or young child as suggested too. I know my DGS would love it, and he's 2. So much to discover in just what ya have shown. Keep going, it's gonna be great and so playful.

scraphq 05-08-2011 05:41 PM

I love scrappies! Love your blocks, very interesting. If I had these blocks, I would make bright scrappy sashing. Nice blocks, I'm sure you will make a very great quilt from them no matter what method you use.

earlylace 05-08-2011 05:43 PM

its great, with lots of interest, it will all blend fine when you are done. Keep going!

Grandma58 05-08-2011 05:47 PM

Use muslin colored sashing and I bet you will love it.

MZStitch 05-08-2011 06:34 PM

Yes, it's busy, but it's certainly not ugly!! I think you will like it alot more once its quilted. I agree with others here, don't use sashing. Perhaps some bold borders or muslin colored borders like Grandma58 recommended!

leiladylei54 05-08-2011 06:37 PM

I don't think it's ugly....and I would probably use a light color beige sashing.

maine ladybug 05-08-2011 07:05 PM

Thanks for posting the picture. I think it would look nice with a quiet, lighter colored sashing amd/or borders. I think a bright or dark border would be too strong for the blocks you have shown.

BETTY62 05-08-2011 09:27 PM

Your blocks are beautiful. The sash and border will really make the colors in the blocks pop.

Janie Q 05-09-2011 01:26 AM

I think its neat. Its not ugly. Its kind of "busy" but thats what I think makes a scrap quilt interesting!

justlooking 05-09-2011 02:23 AM

I would use sashings!

I like this idea.

Mary L Booth 05-09-2011 02:39 AM

Your blocks are nice, if you add a dark narrow sashing around them, they will pop

tmg 05-09-2011 02:50 AM

I would add a neutral color sashing to help break up the blocks.

Rettie V. Grama 05-09-2011 03:03 AM

An Ugly Quilt? No-no-no. I see tulips all over that quilt. It is a work of art. Where your heart leads you, you may cause a masterpiece to happen.

abdconsultant 05-09-2011 03:07 AM

don't stop now.

Krystyna 05-09-2011 03:22 AM

Personally, I like it! I can't wait to see it when you've chosen the sashing. It looks really nice as it is.

Lavada 05-09-2011 03:23 AM

love it keep going

Homespun 05-09-2011 03:42 AM

It will be fine. keep going!

ka9sdn 05-09-2011 03:45 AM

Love the stars!!!!!!!!!! Just keep it going--nothing more than muslin if you sash.

Vat 05-09-2011 03:45 AM

Sometimes sashing makes a BIG difference. Have you auditioned anything for that?

DA Mayer 05-09-2011 03:53 AM

I see stars in the blocks, why don't you audition with sashing? Lay down large piece of fabric using a color from the blocks. I would try the light green or yellow from the gingham, a gray or black, blue or red, tan, taupe, muslin, brown. Next switch it up a little, turn the blocks on point put a narrow border of the darker color and then a sashing. Good luck and I think it will be a fun youth quilt.
Another idea is change the texture for the sashing, use a fleece or minkee or flannel.

Ugly where is ugly I think it looks great a child will love it. No sashing I don't think.

AUQuilter 05-09-2011 04:07 AM

I think it would look great without sashing, as long as you have enough blocks. I am a scrappy quilter at heart.

#1piecemaker 05-09-2011 04:21 AM

I wouldn't sash it at all. I'd sew all the blocks together just the way they are. You'll be amazed at how well it will turn out!!
