Hopefully a new day will bring better things to you. I hope your hand is feeling better today. Keep us posted!!
I am so sorry about your burns, but glad you were there to deal with the fire while it was small. When my Rowenta travel iron was less than 6 months old, I stepped out of the sewing room for just a minute. I had the iron plugged in, using it all morning, but when I came back into the room I heard a crackling, hissing sound and tons of steam coming from the iron. By the time I got it unplugged, it had scorched a place on my ironing board, but no flames. I was glad I didn't leave the room for more than a minute. The store I had purchased the iron from replaced it and sent the damaged one to Rowenta.
I think Rowenta owes you the cost of replacing your fabric, ironing board cover and iron and any medical bills you may encounter. Let them know you are posting your story on the internet - maybe that will "build a fire" under them to compensate you. Pun intended! After your story and my experience I am thinking about just trashing my replacement Rowenta travel iron. I hope your hand heals up very quickly. God Bless, Linda |
WOW I hope you heal well and quickly. That must have been scarey.
Oh my goodness, Thank goodness you are okay. This could have been a disaster. You can always buy more fabric but injury is a whole other thing. Hopefully Rowenta will have an explanation.
Oh, how awful! I hope three things happen for you: Your hand heals quickly, Rowenta makes this as right as they possibly can, and someone here on the board has the fabric you need! Blessings~
I had a Rowena catch fire, too - it was where the cord attched, i think. Couple that with how the several I've had drip uncontrollably just after the warranty runs out and I will never buy another one. Which is too bad, because I like the weight and steam hole pattern on the rowenta. But I feel like the quality is just too poor to warrant the cost.
ouch, burns really hurt too! So sorry this happened to you, hope you hand heals quickly!

re:Rowenta Iron
First of all, I am very sorry to hear of your burn and the scare with the fire. Having said that, I have more than one Rowenta iron. I have the travel iron, and the steam generator iron. I can't imagine life without either one of these irons. The steam generator iron is quite the work horse. It is on the whole time I am in my sewing room. It is the best iron for craft work that I have ever used. It irons beautifully and can get wrinkles out better than any iron that I have used. Don't recall you saying what iron from Rowenta that caught on fire. Please let us know.
I am a first time poster. This site is awesome! JudyC

Oh - to say I had a bad morning would be an understatement. I was piecing the backing for a very special memorial quilt I designed and pieced - which will be auctioned off for a college schlorship memorial fund. My Rowenta travel iron BURST INTO FLAMES as I was using it. It burnt the cord off - it was laying on the floor still plugged in - blackened my rings - blistered my hand and burned a HOLE bigger than a quarter in my backing fabric - WHICH I HAVE NO MORE OF! I was able to get the fire out by putting my other hand over the burning fabric on the ironing board. WHAT A MESS.................my DH came in the house and said "what happened" - "get the burn ointment and meet me in the kitchen" was all I could come up with.
Can't even think about how I'm going to fix this problem with the backing yet. Tomorrow is another day. Will call Rowenta's customer service in AM to tell them I'm sending this iron to them and will request an explanation of what happened. Have NEVER had anything like this happen - ever. I even have the iron plugged into a timer so that it can't accidently be left on.......but it actually was on fire as I held it. Hope this NEVER happens to anyone else. |
I hope that your hand gets better. This could have been a real disaster. What if you had gone to the other room for a minutes. Your entire house could be gone.
wow...was not expecting to read that....wow....do hope you will heal quickly and will get a nice settlement from Rowenta! Can you post a pix of the iron before you ship it off? I too think a label or an applique on the backing will work fine!
How scary. I don't think I have ever heard of an iron bursting into flames while your're using it. I have heard of them catching fire just being plugged in but nothing like this. Glad you are all right and it didn't set the house on fire. If you can't find more of the fabric could you put an applique over the hole?
Sorry to hear this and hope you heal fast and Rowenta makes real good on the damage.
So sorry for your pain and do pray you heal quickly and painlessly! This seems to reinforce my attitude that the more you pay for something doesn't insure it's the best! Good luck with the way this all pans out for you with luv'n hugs coming your way.
YIKES!!! Hope your hand heals and Rowenta does the right thing !

After about thirty minutes I decided to just let the egg white dry on my hand & go on with what I was doing. About 3 hours later, I dipped my thumb in the egg white again, let it dry on the thumb & went to bed. When I got up the next morning, all the swelling in the thumb had gone down & there was NO evidence of the burn. I was totally amazed. It was like it had never happened. This is one magic, holistic cure that I hope helps someone else. |
eeeeekkkkkkk!!!!!!! that is awful. hopefully they can replace for free and tell you what happened.

Sorry about the burn.. And glad it wasn't worse.. I keep lavender essential oil in the kitchen for burns maybe I need to keep a bottle in the sewing room too. Just in case. I have never had a Rowenta iron I always thought they were a little crazy in price. With all I have been reading about the problems I am glad. I have a T-Fal that I am perfectly happy with.. It is my second since my daughter dropped the first one and dented the point. I left it with her and bought a new one when I moved.. It does have the auto shut off but reheats quickly so I am fine with that. I have an old iron a friend of mine found for me at and estate sale. Cloth cord, no steam/no holes. I use it for fusible and just make sure I unplug when I am done.. Good luck on trying to get anything out of Rowenta.
Sorry to hear of your flaming incident and hope your hand heals quickly. I agree with some of the others about posting the backing fabric picture so that you may fortunately find a match. I have the regular Rowenta iron, but if I were to purchase another iron in the future, it WON'T be a Rowenta and has nothing to do with hearing your experience.
Sorry to hear about your accident and I hope you heal quickly. I alsways thought I wanted a Rowenta but am glad I didn't buy one. I am sure there are other irons that have had problems too, but never heard of one bursting into flames when being used. I'll bet that was really scary and am glad you are ok. Please post pictures of your fabric someone might have some if you need it.
So sorry for your bad day. Sounds like a good reason to not buy Rowenta again. Good advice for all of us to beware of what could happen with our irons.
you should take pictures of your burns; the quilt; backing and the iron - to have for a record . they have gone to producung poor quality irons and you shouldn't have to pay for it. if they don't stand behind their product they should be sued . sometimes they only way to get them to reimburse you is to threaten with a lawsuit. that could have been much worse for you and i hope your hand heals ok . imagine that blowing up in someones face !! that is why i think the only way to have them fix the problem is for people to really complain when something like this happens because it may keep it from happening to someone else.

Several years ago, I had a fairly new Black & Decker iron that caught fire and burned my brand-new ironing board cover. When I contacted the company about it, they didn't want to do anything about it. I took the iron back to Wal Mart and got a Sunbeam--which I love--. I hounded Black & Decker for another ironing board cover, because mine was new (I don't buy new ones very often). They would not even give me a cover. About a month after the constant hounding, they sent me a blender for my trouble. I didn't need a blender. I have alwys wished I had handled it different. I think they should have compensated me a little better. I had left my sewing room several hours earlier, and if I hadn't smelled something hot, my house could have burned down. It was supposed to be automatic off, but it obviously wasn't.
Rowenta should replace either the backing fabric or the cost, not to mention another iron if you even wanted it. That is a very scary scenario. Hope you are ok with the burn.

Please report this to the Consumer Protection Agency or find out what agency tracks safety hazards of appliances. This may not be a unique event and sometimes recalls are appropriate. If it's not reported, these incidents will continue and perhaps become more common.
Sorry this happened to you. It'd be so frightening! My old Rowenta developed an electrical problem and I put it in the trash before it 'caught fire'. Now, I always disconnect the iron when I leave the room and am done sewing. I bought a Sunbeam that works okay--doesn't heat as well as the Rowenta but I do feel safer. |
I agree with the posts about documenting your injuries and the iron, the fabric and ironing board cover with photos. May I also suggest that if you do not get the compensation for the iron, fabric and your injuries you are do, remember there is always facebook. You can post your issue on your wall and on Rowenta's as well (I'm sure they have a facebook page.) No company wants the bad publicity. Also, keep after them. You deserve an immediate reply. I burned my hand with steam from a microwave dish covered in plastic. It took two weeks with my hand bandaged. You really should see a doctor for proper treatment and for documentation. Hope you heal soon and you get the satisfaction from Rowenta you deserve.

Do what the other posters are saying!
Document, Document, Document! Take pictures of the iron, your fabric, your hand. Write down what you were doing at the time. Along with reporting this to Rowenta, laynak's suggestion to report to a Consumer Protection Agency is EXCELLENT! From just reading the posts on here, a lot of irons seem to have issues that could - and have - turned into safety hazards. If 'they' don't know about the problem(s), 'they' can't do anything about them. And I doubt that very many members of that agency are reading this board - or if they are - that they are tracking irons. UL - Underwriters Laboratories - might be another place to tell about your experience. |
Wow! I'm glad you didn't get terrible burns or catch the house on fire. I had an iron cord melt years ago while I was using it. That was scary. Please let us know what the company will do for you in replaceing, refunding or helping you with cost of materials. Big hugs.
OMG I hope your burns will heal quickly and I am so sorry this happened. I would say it is a freak accident but I believe I have read about other quilters having iron issues.
I'm sorry about your quilt too |
The hairdryer coils will glow a low red when the setting is switched to heat and if enough dust gets on the coils or not enough air from a clogged intake, they will get too hot and glow bright red/orange and break from the heat. Be sure your hair dryer has a removable air filter so it can be kept cleaned inside.

I agree with the other posters, take pictures, document document, go to the dr. and keep a lawyer in mind. I would contact the company and they should make restitution, pay your doctor bills and compensate you for your injuries etc. If they take a hard nosed attitude, tell them the next contact will be from your lawyer about the situation and you may be surprised to see how their tune changes. I can't believe (well yes I can) a company such as Black & Decker taking the attitude they had. If nothing else post what happened, their attitude, etc. to face book, Linkedln or any other public place you can get it and get the word out about the iron and the attitude if it is not good and the injuries you suffered. I do hope your hand is healing well, but you definitely should see the doctor about it, you can get infection in burns very easily and that is not something you want for sure. Good luck in whatever path you choose.

Well sorry to hear of that big misfortune, but it's wonderful that all in all your OK and you still have a house to quilt in. fires can be devastating.
I have read a few time on this board that Rowenta irons catch fire. Does anyone know if it is the same model that catches fire or a varity of Rowenta irons? I have a Rowenta, which I really like, but it makes mer nervous to leave it plugged into my power strip when I am in the room. After reading about this recent fire, I think I will just dump the iron. Hope your hand heals quickly.
Dear Kay: so sorry to read of of your bad day. Hope the burns are not to bad. Your Kansas neighbor is sending you a long ranch " HUG ". Hope today is better.
Pictures and a good lawyer sound right to me... It is sure good you were right there, you could have lost your house! Or worst yet... Heaven forbid.
I'm so sorry to read this. I hope your hand heals quickly and that Rowenta compensates you! As for the back of the quilt, I love the look of a row of patchwork across the back of a quilt. Maybe that would work with your design.
Hugs and prayers for a better day. Will watch to see what Rowenta says.
This is not the first time I've heard of the same problem with these irons in particular. Hope your burns aren't too bad and you are able to replace the backing fabric. I sewed a BIG Heart patch over one of my burns.
Don,t send the iron back. They owe you more than an explanation and a new iron. This is a product liability issue. Tkae pictures of everything and write out what happened and keep copies. Forget Customer Service send to corporate headquarters legal department. Go to doctor. Be prepared for what you want when they contact you. use lawyer if they do not want to cooperate (they will though).
I'd be interested to know if it was an older travel iron or a new one.I have one I take to retreats and classes and where ever else I take my sewing machine. The only trouble I've ever had with the travel iron is I was pushing down hard on it and it gave way and broke. I bought another one when Joanne's had them on sale.
