I had this very same thing happen to me. I was just thankful I was in the room at the time. Sometimes I leave the sewing room for a minute and leave everything turned on. It burned a hole in my ironing board cover, but thankfully nothing else. Hope you hand is better. Let us know what Rowenta says about this.

quaint4900 05-15-2012 06:30 AM

What a frightening experience !!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! Hope your hands heal fast. Don't know where the burnt part on the quilt is, but is it possible for you to put an applique over it and date the quilt when it was made and what for and have it blend into the quilt somehow? Take care of your hands.

grandme26 05-15-2012 08:18 AM

Hope your hand is healing?

grandme26 05-15-2012 08:20 AM

I hope your hand is healing.

Just for the record it doesn't have to be an electrical appliance that catches on fire. Years ago I was dampening clothing to be ironed ... had a clear glass pop bottle filled with water and fitted with a sprinkler top sitting on the kitchen table and a pile of clothes to be dampened piled on a chair nearby ... all of a sudden I noticed smoke billowing out of the center of the pile of clothes. Called the fire department because I just couldn't figure out what had just happened. Evidently the sun was shining through the 3 large kitchen windows and through the clear glass bottle of water which acted as a prism generating heat which focused on the clothing and caught them on fire. Who would have thought???????????

karate lady 05-15-2012 08:54 AM

so sorry for the burns, but please do not put ointment on burns. Very cold (not ice) water to stop the heat. You can put the ointments on later . The object is to stop the heat from burning more just like a roast from the oven continues to cook. smile.. Ice will just give you frost bite which is as bad as burning. Hope it heals well and you get a monetary refund from the iron folks. Would not want another one. smile...

One needs to be aware of all those sorts of things - that's why clear glass balls/spheres are covered!

I had a Rowenta regular iron start smoking on me. I was just glad I was quilting at the time and smelled something burning! It had one of those auto shut offs and I had at one time or another forgot to shut it off when I did errands so luckily it didn't do it then when I wasn't home. I also have that travel one so please let us know what the Rowenta people said. I will pass this on to my friends that have this travel iron. Thanks..........

labtechkty 05-15-2012 12:44 PM

Not too long ago, I had read another post that essentially said the same thing about the Rowenta Iron...I had thought about buying one but I don't think I will now...so sorry about your hand and fabric...Please post a pict..someone might have it in their stash...

cny_sewer39 05-15-2012 01:21 PM

OMG. I am sooo sorry that this happened to you. Thank you so much for the warning. I believe that I have the same iron, and I will be extra careful. I hope that you were not seriously hurt. <HUGS> <HUGS> to you.

Have a blessed day.

This is terrible. Could you imagine if you had left the house with the iron plugged in. It would have burned your whole house down. I try to always unplug my iron after I use it but sometimes......... Sorry to hear about your hand. Burns Can be so painful. Let us know what transpires from all this okay.

Dawn227 05-15-2012 06:11 PM

Kay,
I hope your hands will be ok. On the burned hole, can that spot happen to line up where you put a quilt lable?

quiltlady1941 05-15-2012 07:30 PM

I don't have a travel version, but I think if I did, I'd put it away to see if there will be a recall. I'd be afraid to use it, even though the one you have is a replacement after the other one failed, and surely Rowenta wouldn't send out another risky one, would they? Hard to say.

I searched for "Rowenta Recall" and found other appliances mentioned but not an iron. They make a lot of irons. It may be the most popular brand of the moment. I have one regular size, but the steam function doesn't work any more. In fact, I have two irons with the same problem, but I don't need steam. I like my Rowenta because it heats up to "cotton" temp very, very fast.

homebody323 05-16-2012 04:49 AM

Only a quilters main concern is the damaged fabric. Is you hand ok?

judykay 05-16-2012 06:49 AM

Did you have any aloe in the house, it is fantastic for burns. It use to be only in plant form but now you can buy it in a bottle, I keep it in the refrigerator so it is nice and cooling. My 10 yr old grandson burnt his finger on the filling from a pop tart and this kept it from blistering. We put it on his finger after we used ice for a while. Keep us posted on you hand and what Rowenta does about this disaster.

SuzyQ 05-16-2012 07:42 AM

That's horrible. Hope your hand is better

Grandma Peg 05-16-2012 07:46 AM

Wow, can't even imagine how that could happen. So sorry that you got burned and also your backing. Probably the only good thing is the fact that it wasn't the quilt. Let us know what the company says. Hope your hand is ok.

nannya54 05-16-2012 12:24 PM

So scarey! Am praying that your hands will be alright.

Normabeth 05-16-2012 05:59 PM

Fire is scary!! when I was a kid, (many moons ago) we have an iron that actually melted. No one got hurt and we just threw it away, as this is what you did years ago. Hope you get a satifactory answer.

This is so scary!! Hope you are feeling better soon and heal quickly - burns can be so finicky! Rowentas have become a popular name and many of us have bought them - I have a regular one and the travel one - Thanks for the info and warning! Please keep us up to date with what you find out and any further info. Do take care!

Ruby the Quilter 05-16-2012 08:17 PM

I can't think of anything I have in the sewing room to smother flames. Like Peckish said we need fire extinguishers in our homes. I will put that on my shopping list.

emlee51 05-17-2012 07:29 AM

Although I'm behind in my QB's may I add my hurry up and get better wishes along with everyine else. Hope you'll post your results with Rowenta.

KyKaren1949 05-17-2012 11:03 AM

Gosh! So sorry this happened to you. I've had the Rowenta travel iron for three years without one problem. I think with the quality of manufacturing today, we can expect problems with any product, no matter the good reputation of the company! It's disgraceful they put out so many inferior products.

Taughtby Grandma 05-22-2012 01:59 PM

I'm glad nothing else was burned, and I'm glad you didn't get severly hurt. Maybe you can put the label over the hole or applique something over it so it won't look bad.

sew1 05-22-2012 08:06 PM

Seems to me the Rowenta irons have a lot of problems. Glad I don't own one. Hope your hand heals Ok and you get results about the iron. I go along with some of the others, maybe good place for label. Good luck.

MimiBug123 05-22-2012 09:04 PM

Goodness! This sort of makes you question "A bad day quilting beats a good day working." I hope your hand gets better soon. Please post pics of the backing. I'd be glad to share if I have it! If not, maybe you can find something that coordinates with it, or put a quilt label over the hole.

Gilly 05-23-2012 03:38 AM

Maybe you can put the label over the hole amy not be the traditional placing but...

mtteach101 10-26-2012 02:59 PM

We had a glass ornament turn window light into a prism type light focused on my husbands brand new (expensive!) work boots and it burned a hole in them!

hperttula123 10-26-2012 03:16 PM

Oh goodness. I hope your hand is ok and that you do find some replacement fabric.
