I've used ruffled eyelette around a little girl's quilt. When quilting it, l left the outer 1" unquilted. l sewed the eyelette to the edge of top/ batting, then folded the backing edge in by 1/2" and hand sewed.. Another idea l've not tried yet is inserting wide rickrack so just points are visble along edge of binding. I saw an interesting technique at a quilt exhibit, the outer border of wall hanging was a border print, and the sewist had cut along the starfish and shell outlines in their irregular shape through all layers of quilt, then meticulously hand stitched the folded in ( maybe 1/8"?) edges with a tiny buttonhole stitch in metalic thread.
