Hi all,
Well, here is the quilt with the applique finished and the sashing and border on it...I chose to applique using colors that coordinated with each piece, so some of the stitching doesn't really show up...hindsight says I think I may have liked it if I had gone ahead with my test block, and done it in black or gray...but not taking it all out now!!! Just a lesson learned...The plaid sashing wasn't really too hard to make sure it was straight, the fabric itself was pretty much right on, I starched it before I cut it, and used the actual colored lines as cutting and sewing lines...I know that the stripes don't match up where the sashing intersects..and I considered re-doing it...but, really thinking since the lines are not all "catywampus" that is what I really wanted to be ok.
Now I am wondering whether I should add another border, like red, green, or blue...or leave well enough alone! :?: ..The narrow yellow orange strip will be the binding...thanks again for all the ideas and input!!..
Going to go and see how hard it will be to get the sashing lines to match at intersections now...sigh...argh...lol

Looks great, the plaid looks like roads for the vehicles to follow.

Here is 1 more pic with green fabric as possibility...

dunster 09-05-2011 11:34 AM

I think I have some of that plaid fabric. It's perfect on your quilt. I love that red for an outer border, with maybe a narrow inner border of the gold if you have enough to use for that and the binding. Or if the quilt is already large enough, it's fine as-is. I love your designs, especially that tractor.

kiffie2413 09-05-2011 11:38 AM

Thanks, I can't take credit for the designs..just finding them...some of them are from fatcatpatterns.com from Sindy Rodenmayer. The others are free color book pages I googled and adapted over to the fabrics...

pattypurple 09-05-2011 11:40 AM

What a great quilt. I've never thought of using a plaid for sashing. It really works on this one. I also like the idea of a narrow gold inner border and the red for outer border.
Well done.

sidmona 09-05-2011 11:44 AM

I like the red border with the yellow orange binding.

Greenheron 09-05-2011 11:48 AM

The composition of your quilt, the balance are just right......no more border(s), I think.

Sewfine 09-05-2011 11:53 AM

I like the blue and gold.

blueangel 09-05-2011 12:10 PM

It's darling

MadQuilter 09-05-2011 12:25 PM

I like the green and gold. Funny how our preferences are so different.

I know! That is why I love this board...love the variety, and also gives me ideas I probably never would have thought of!! I at 1st thought leave it with the plaid...then thought, "hey!...what about adding a little red border?"...Then thought of blue...and hubby then piped in with, "or you could use green..." lol...Only thing I am sure of (I think??...) is I will be using the yellowish orange for the binding...

I think the blue is a perfect match to the sashing. It is a darling pattern.....all boy!

kiffie2413 09-05-2011 04:43 PM

Thanks, so thats 3 for red, 1 for green, 2 for blue, and 1 for leave it with the plaid only...I am leaning towards either blue, or leave it with plaid only...binding will be the yellow-orange...thanks again guys...
Now to decide how to quilt it...debated tying it, but know I really should quilt it...hmmm...

QuiltingJaguar 09-05-2011 04:53 PM

Now why don't I think of things like plaids? I am always afraid I can not get the lines running straight. I love the trucks on the white looking background and the plaid is the "pop" in the picture, thanks for telling and sharing this.

Thanks for your kind words! I was worried about the plaids being straight, too...but actually the fabric turned out to be fairly straight, and with some starching, it really was no issue. The other thing was, I measured out a distance that I wanted, and found out which lines I needed to cut to get the right width of sashing, did that the same for each piece of sashing. I then used the line closest to 1/4" for sewing the sashing and squares together...it worked out much better than actual measuring, and wasted very little fabric...it was well worth doing it that way to keep it straight!!

Nice job on the sashing! It adds alot to the quilt. Next time? Consider putting the plaid cornerstones on the bias, IMHO it would have added interest. I think it needs borders and will be one terrific quilt.

snipforfun 09-05-2011 06:49 PM

Turned out great. What a job to do all those thread changes!

Marilynsue 09-05-2011 07:24 PM

Hey! I made a purse out of that plaid. I love it and have had so many compliments. Makes a really cute quilt too!

Joy.lynn 09-05-2011 10:08 PM

Very nice

Bonbonary 09-06-2011 03:39 AM

I like the blue border.

Yooper32 09-06-2011 03:42 AM

Like the red myself. That is one darling quilt and done to perfection, I think.

Dolphyngyrl 09-06-2011 03:51 AM

I like the red, green is nice too. The blue is just too much blue in my opinion like the sashing. I think the red pops more.

I think it needs the red border, but I love red and can never get enough of it in a quilt!
:-D

This is the cutest quilt I have ever seen! You did a fabulous job, I love the plaid sashing. I've been looking for a pattern just like this for months. I'm going to check out the sites you quote. I have a feeling some grandsons will be getting quilts for Christmas! Congratulations on a job very well done.

Homespun 09-06-2011 05:48 AM

It looks great. I think I prefer the blue with the gold.

gigi10 09-06-2011 06:24 AM

I vote for the red and plaids being off make a quilt look aged leave it.

grannypat7925 09-06-2011 06:39 AM

I love it. The plaid sashing really sets it off!

lauriequilts 09-06-2011 06:43 AM

I love the way the blue looks.

joyce888 09-06-2011 07:12 AM

I think the plaid was the perfect choice. If you want the quilt bigger I would use red for the outer border. I also think if the red had multi-color dots or a small design would also look good.

quiltmouse 09-06-2011 07:25 AM

I like the red. I like the blue, too.

What about a 1" red border with the blue, then yellow binding.

If that is too much work, what about red border, then inset a 1/4" blue piping as you add the binding?

...I've seen that done somewhere, but could not find it on youtube. It might be an inset between 2 borders, or between quilt & border. Sorry, not sure.

I love your plaid!!! You did a lovely job lining it all up. (Your kiddo will never notice your intersections.) Your quilt is totally adorable. :)

damaquilts 09-06-2011 07:30 AM

I like the blue and gold.

WMUTeach 09-06-2011 10:27 AM

I think "I" like the blue with the blue plaid and the yellow for the binding is striking. But really, any of the color choices work quite well.

vickimc 09-06-2011 10:48 AM

love it. use the red for the border, yellow binding and use the green on the back. now ya got it all. I do love the plaid.

dphelps 09-06-2011 10:54 AM

Don't worry about your plaid lining up. It looks great. I would prefer the blue sashing with the yellow binding. Greatjob.

Quiltaddict 09-06-2011 11:42 AM

I vote for the blue border.

kathyd 09-06-2011 11:58 AM

If the size is right, I would just put the binding on. Otherwise looks great.

Pam H 09-06-2011 01:37 PM

Your quilt is so cute!
I would use the blue for a border.

lisajane 09-06-2011 01:42 PM

Red and gold, beautiful. The red makes the blue plaid pop.

ube quilting 09-06-2011 02:16 PM

So cute. Love the gold and red!. If there is enough, I would use narrow gold and more of that great plaid!
