Urghhhhh big oops, what to do now???

I cut out my squares for a pattern, walked away from it for awhile. When I finally sat down I started to draw diagonal lines across the lighter ones and proceeded to make HST. After doing them all I realized that I was supposed to make 4 patches not HST for the pattern. What swiss cheese I have for brains...bad day!! They are now HST in greens and browns. Any suggestions on what to do with them now? Try not to laugh to hard :D. I have forgiven myself today!! :-)

How about pinwheels? They're still a 4 patch configuration. I feel your pain.

GingerK 08-03-2014 03:20 PM

Okay, time for a design decision. Make the pinwheels and then frame them with a co-ordinating (or contrasting) fabric, to bring them back to the size of the 4 patch. (or set them as a square in square or goodness knows how many other ways they could be put together) If that will not actually work with the original pattern, well, you could recut everything, hoping you have enough fabric, or just totally change the whole thing and make it all your own.

This is an opportunity NOT a mistake.

Sounds like me yesterday - I wanted to make pinwheels so I placed two charms together, sewed around the outside, and down the middle diagonally a couple of times. When I cut them apart I had closed pockets sewn around all three sides. Spent the next hour unsewing. At least you have HST's - just Google image HST quilts and you'll get a bunch of ideas. Happy quilting!

LOL, this story would make anyone feel better.

Surely there must be something in the air! I haven't been able to do much right, either! I do feel your angst and hope you've found something to do with your 'new' HSTs!

I just love Quilter's True Confessions......it makes me feel normal!

Not a big oops, that's just your inner designer firing up your creative mojo! This one's going to be special

When I make mistakes like that they turn into potholders which can be any size.

I agree with GingerK. I am almost always running short on fabric when piecing charity quilts from donated fabrics. When given lemons, make lemonade !!

Sounds like time for Plan B for those pieces.

YES!! I call this a great design opportunity; the universe was obviously telling you not to make something from some old pattern, but to strike out on your own today. :D

You're going to love whatever you come up with, push yourself a bit with pieced borders, too. And be sure to show us the finished project!

Make some more 4 patches to match then combine for Buckeye Beauty

THANK YOU ALL so very much, I do feel so much better reading your comments!!! I have company visiting this week, but as soon as my sewing cabinet can be opened again I will take this as the opportunity you describe and create something!!!

I agree with GingerK. We all make mistakes. That is why the call them accidents not on purposes (don't think that is a word but you get the meaning, I hope)

Creative juices telling you there is something greater for you to make. Don't fight it, go with the flow and post a picture so we can all enjoy it. Happy Quilting

Several of my favorite quilts changed paths in th middle of the project because I goofed...Sometimes plan B is better anyway. Don't be afraid to do your own thing!

This is a very pretty pattern to use up some pinwheels, but be aware that the pinwheels are spinning both ways. One row spins left right and one row spins left. Sure makes a beautiful pattern. With all those HST's, you can make the pinwheels both ways easily. Then another bunch of 16 patches, and you have it.

Thank you for this post! I thought I was having one of those weeks all by myself! I had just gotten my Quiltmaker magazine for September/October, and found a quick pattern (Harvest) that I thought would be PERFECT for a baby quilt I had to do. Great big HST's, it was going together quickly. Two of rows one, two and three. All the pieces cut out, rows one and two put together, and as I'm laying out row three, I remind myself that I'm switching the pattern's light and dark. The other voice in my head says, "Really? Did I miss the memo?". Instead of ripping, I went with it, and it turned out really cute.

farmquilter 08-05-2014 07:06 AM

maviskw, that is a great looking quilt and besides, the wind blows in any number of directions.

Thanks, but if you don't get the pinwheels right, the pattern won't turn out the same. It is the dark pieces on the pinwheels that make the square-on-point pattern. Maybe it would be a cute another way.

donna13350 08-05-2014 02:03 PM

I just did almost the same thing..I misread the directions and ended up with a ton of 1/4 square triangles that are way too small...so I will find a way to incorporate them into the sashing of my quilt...way too many to waste!!!

Stitchit123 08-05-2014 03:03 PM

I call this Divine Intervention. I end up just re-working my original plan with my chosen fabrics and I would say that 9 out of 10 times I like the 'revision' better.
