Using Fat Quarters
I am making a quilt pattern that calls for 20 fat quarters. I found a fat quarter stack of 30 FQ's of a pattern I liked and bought if for my pattern. The question I have is this: Is it tackie to use the same fabric pattern but in a different color in a quilt?:p I am going thru this stage were I can't seem to pick the right fabrics for my patterns. I get the stuff home look at the fabric again and decide I need something different. It's costing me an arm and and leg!

do you mean two different color ways in the same design? Its your quilt, if you like it that way, do it.
|
That's how you build your stash! I do that too. It's not tacky at all to you the same patterned fabric in different color ways. I see that all the time.
I also have a hard time picking fabrics for my quilts. I think it just takes practice. Fortunately, with the practice we get to make more quilts. Good luck and show us a picture when your done. Gina |
The Missouri star quilt company has a jelly roll quilt tutorial has fabrics with the same pattern but different colors and it came out beautifully. Do whatever u think looks good.

I've done that before & liked the result. Go for it!

I did a quilt with a black print and every color of Moda Marbles Swirls I could find. It is one of my favorites, so, yes, it's your quilt and do what you'd like. I tell my daughter it will match when it's sewn together - not always true, but true enough to get you started.

I don't think I've ever made a quilt with the same color as the pattern shows. Mainly because I usually can't find those, plus sometime I like the pattern but not the colors.
|
I have never made a quilt from a pattern and used the same colors. I like my creative freedom and I find a lot of the time the fabrics used in the pattern aren't fabrics I would ever buy. You own the pattern and the end product is yours; make it with any color or theme of fabric you want!
|
No rules - your quilt and if it looks right to your "eye" then it will be right.
Please show us a piccie when finished. |
I don't make quilts same colour or same fabric as pattern. Usually can't find same fabric or fabric would be too expensive. The colours are not my scheme or just fancy a green quilt this time. I am very adventurous and frequently start with a pattern and end up doing my own additional patterns or layouts.

If you aren't happy with your colors add more colors and make it a scrappy, lots of colors and patterns. Scrappies always look good, you can add a certain color to tie it together.
|
I start with the patterns basics but often make changes in the quilt as I go. Even with kits! Must admit sometimes its because I made a mistake. But sometimes those turn out the best and most original.

It's definitely not tacky. You have purchased the pattern and it is yours to complete as you wish: different fabrics, different size, different configuration, additional blocks and borders, whatever you like. You can be as creative with the basic pattern as much as you like. Don't forget to post a photo!

One of my projects right now is a chevron quilt made from the same fabric pattern in 10 different colors. So far it looks really sharp. It depends on what you do with it. There are no wrong colors, just colors done wrong. I also have a crazy quilt started using every scrap I have. I think that style of quilt allows for it, though not everyone likes them. Maybe show us a picture of what you're putting together. We give honest opinions.

A lot of times the Fat Quarter bundle is all from the same line of fabric, therefore there will be the same prints in different colors. I love the quilts I've done this with, but I try to not place the same prints (different colors) next to each other. Sometimes that can make me crazy, though. Do what you wish!! It'll be great!

I think that normally when someone says not to use the same print in a different color is when there are only 5 - 6 fabrics in a quilt. I believe that it is quite common when using a large number of fabrics such as a FQ pack, you are going to get the same print in several different colorways.
And it is your quilt, so whatever you like goes - but yes if I have a FQ pack I am using all of the fabrics in it. |
I say GO FOR IT!

Gladys - Board name GV09 - is making her Dear Jane quilt with the same fabric/different colors. Check her weekly progress posts. I think it looks fantastic.

Nothing wrong with using the same fabric in different colors. Sometimes it can actually give a cohesiveness to your project.
|
I do it all the time. Of course, I could be tacky and never know it.
|
I like to pick a pattern and start with what I have in my stash and then if I need to, go shopping for a piece or two to fill in. I don't worry about using the same fabric line for all the pieces in a quilt. I just use what I like.
|
Just look at any magazine lately......many fabrics, a lot the same design in different colorways in them....Don't let that bother you......
|
do what works for you... it's all part of your artistic interpretation.
|
do it all the time go for it as long as you like it. can't wait to see what you are doing. have fun
|
I just bought some fabric with the same patterns and different colors. I plan on using them together.

As long as you are pleased with how it looks, it's perfect!

If using the same print in different colorways is tacky, then I'm tacky... Every jellyroll, layer cake and charm square collection has the same prints in several colorways and I don't think they were made to be used in separate projects.
