I had 2 quilts that have been pieced for 6 years and just finished the last one this morning. They are both backed with good quality muslin. It works fine and looks good. Here's 2 of the 4 UFO's I have finished this year.

Just a thought, but some LA'ers will not quilt with sheeting for backing. So check with your LA person first.

A few years ago, KQ sold the regular width muslin at different prices according to thread count. It might be worth considering.

Muslin is the only thing I use for backings. I try to find the best available and the widest. I also use sheets for backings.

I also use only muslin for backing. I'm kind of throwback person, that I feel if muslin was okay to use for decades, centuries, then it's okay for me! I usually use Kona muslin and I sew together the pieces for larger quilts. When I learned to quilt I had to do some piecing on the backing. The person I learned from reminded me that most quilts during pioneer days were pieced together anyway.

A place to order is Marshall's dry goods.....nothing like a good quality muslin to back a quilt with.......or a wallhanging. The idea of using printed fabric makes the stores very happy..........although a good quality muslin is not far behind cost wise..... |
I buy wide muslin from fabric.com all the time- in fact those 2 Connecticut quilts I posted a month or so ago were muslin background & muslin backings- good quality, wonderful fabric. I use a lot of muslin- there are a lot of differences in muslins, I always purchase 'Premium Muslin' and always buy it from fabric.com
