I use muslin all the time. I don't know what kind you looked at but there are different grades. Muslin is what the ladies used to use all of the time for backing. It might seem a little thin. But, it makes a great backing.

I bought a really nice muslin at Walmart, if you can believe that. It was on a bolt with the battings, interfacings, etc. One thing to think about . . . If you're not a good machine quilter your mistakes really stand out on muslin as opposed to a print fabric.

I use muslin for backing in my quilts n wall hanging. I wait til I have 60% off coupon from Joann's and order 120" wide bolts. So useful and can get many quilts out of it. I just finish my bolts recently so I have to order more.

I wouldn't use muslin after going to all the work of creating a lovely quilt top! Just my thoughts!

I use LS (Legacy Studio) Premium Muslin Bleached from JoAnn Fabrics for art quilts (painting, printing, gelatin plate monoprinting, etc.). It is a high thread count muslin which comes in 44", 90", 108" and 118" widths. I haven't used it as backing, but it is excellent quality and could be used as backing.

I agree with Moda muslin.

I buy lots and lots of muslin of different weights. Thin is for strip quilts and crazy quilt blocks, heavy is for quilt backs. I usually buy muslin at JoAnn when there is a sale or I have a coupon. I like muslin because the quilting shows. froggyintexas

I have a King sized mystery quilt I started in about 2004, and just recently finished. Since it is so large, I thought I would use muslin as the backing. I was in Hobby Lobby and looked at the 108" wide muslin, and it was SOOO thin it reminded me of cheesecloth. Needless to say, I did not buy it.
What are your thoughts on using muslin? Or does anyone know where I can get better muslin? |
My quilt club buys muslin for backing our donation quilts. We buy the Kona cotton muslin by the bolt. We use a 40 or 50 %off coupon at joanns when we do so, so it's not so expensive. It's very nice quality.

There are all grades of muslin, just like regular fabric. I, personally, buy the very best I can from JoAnn's when I am able to use my 50% off coupon. I buy 10 yds at a time, preshrink it and wrap it on a core board that the store is happy to let me have. It does shrink a lot, even the good stuff, so factor that in your purchase. I use muslin often on my quilts and have never had a problem....The last I bought was "Legacy....96inches wide" from JoAnn's......cost, with coupon....approx. $5 per yard......
