I've had odd linens (stained embroidered napkins, a couple handkerchiefs) I've used the motifs as appliques on crazy quilt blocks, stitched the lace/tatting along the edges. Like tranum, I say that's better than the charity shop.

I agree with this. Sew first, cut later. I would even sew two or more lines near the proposed cut, in the seam allowance.
