I got it open!!!! It's a 128-23 like Verna's but not a centennial. It's got an all gold seal. How do you find out the year? The serial # is AH 616099. I'll try to figure out how to take a pic...

I got excited seeing your post, Verna! Thanks!

I recently got a treadle sewing machine that didn't have a key. It came with a small screwdriver that I took and put into the key slot and very gently turned it. It will unlock or lock the drawers. Maybe you could try this with a small screwdriver. It seems that those old locks could be picked pretty easily. :XD:

Therese - You can go to the Singer Sewing Machine site and check your serial number. They have a great list, it shows the year, the model and where it was made. Just Google "Singer Sewing Machine Serial Number" and the site will pop up first.

Thanks, Patti. I'll do that. I took the picture so far...

How exciting! I never tire of finding those wonderful old machines!

Therese 06-06-2011 09:23 AM

It looks like it's a 1948 model.

Looks just like mine - except yours is a Centennial model - great find.

Therese 06-06-2011 11:10 AM

That's what mine looks like. It looks like you use yours. The bobbins are strange to me.

Great find. You will love it.

Those bobbins are called shuttle bobbins. Very different from the ones we are used to. Someone posted a link to a tutorial on how to load and install them.

Therese, a "Blackside" is a machine that was made with little or no chrome or nickle plating. During WWII, these metals were needed for the war effort, and the cosmetics of the sewing machines were "secondary". The faceplate, and other parts of the machine were black instead of shiny silvery color. There are also blackside attachments...
:)

Thanks for the info! I learned something.
