Air Castle is a great block. I have it in one of my books.

I'm in thanks for hosting.

I'll be happy if I ge a tropical coral reef panel community quilt quilted. I'm doing the water fill pattern fmq'ing and it's giving me some trouble trying to go all the way across the panel on my domestic machine.

cannyquilter 11-12-2016 01:16 AM

Sewbizgirl love that quilt.

NZquilter 11-12-2016 03:03 AM

I couldn't join in yesterday because we got new carpet installed in both the children's room and the living room, so that was an all day project! But for today and tomorrow I'm going to be working on the next clue for the Misty Meadow mystery quilt. Thanks for hosting another VQW!

QuiltMom2 11-12-2016 04:00 AM

After church group sewing, I am going to work on two more machine embroidery/applique blocks and maybe (just maybe!) complete the top. I also have one of the dreaded T-shirt quilts to take a whack at!!

Macybaby 11-12-2016 05:28 AM

Yesterday DH didn't need my help, so I got several hours of sewing in (I work half days on Friday, and also telework so don't have a 75mn drive. I just log off the computer down stairs, and walk upstairs to the sewing room).

I got the one set of blocks complete. This quilt should be about 60" x 60".

What I started with -

http://i31.photobucket.com/albums/c3...ps0ybg32bn.jpg

And the blocks. I used ombre fabric, and the lightest shade of each is on top.

http://i31.photobucket.com/albums/c3...ps6y2hmu4f.jpg

Today I'm working on getting these put together for the 9 patch block. I've already got most of them sewed in pairs, then to sew on the third and I'll have the rows ready to sew together. Goes much faster at this point!

http://i31.photobucket.com/albums/c3...psah3vs5de.jpg

And I really need to get out to the Shed and work on these. Both will be done with black thread and the backing I had was big enough to do them this way.

http://i31.photobucket.com/albums/c3...pss4is20ae.jpg

I'd kind of like to do something custom, but I also want to get them done quickly, so I may go for an allover meander. I think it will look nice either way, and I have over 10 floppies waiting so fast beats fancy at this point.

Beachbaby12 11-12-2016 05:57 AM

Hope to finish some tea towels, travel neck pillow and getting ready to put a border on a quilt. If I get any done, I'll be happy. :)

Beachbaby12 11-12-2016 05:58 AM

All look beautiful, Macy baby!

NZquilter 11-12-2016 06:09 AM

Oh my, Macybaby, those blocks are looking beautiful! That is going to make a stunning quilt. Please post a picture when it's done:)

tkhooper 11-12-2016 06:38 AM

About a quarter of the way done on the tropical seascape quilt. It's coming along and I'm not doing badly on outlining the fish.

Raggiemom 11-12-2016 07:46 AM

Gail, any one of those colors would work I think. Or how about adding a border of the background color, then one of the darker colors. You could do an outer border of half square triangles in the various colors to add more variety. Your quilt looks lovely.

I can't decide where to go with this. Add more brown? Another blue? More green? It's 60"x 80" now and I'm wanting 100" x100".

tkhooper 11-12-2016 08:09 AM

actually I would hate to do anything to interrupt the pattern. Can you do more blocks all the way to the edge? It's such a delicate pattern that just a background fabric binding would suit me to a T on that one. But, I'm a beginner so what do I know.

NZquilter 11-12-2016 08:17 AM

Well, unfortunately, I have to withdraw from participating in this VQW:( I've been having timing issues with my machine for the past three months, but I kept trying to ignore it and limp along. But today some odd scraping sounds were coming from the bobbin case, so at last I will be taking it down to visit the repair shop on Monday. That's okay, I'll watch what everyone else is creating and cross stitch some Christmas ornaments up for the family. There is never nothing to do!

I'm sorry you won't be able to participate. It's not looking as good for me, but I'm hoping to get one good day in of quilting.

Isn't it the the truth that there is never nothing to do. My mother used to complain all the time about being bored. She asked once if I wasn't bored a lot because my husband worked lots of hours. I honestly told her I couldn't remember the last time I was bored. I always have something to do!

Raggiemom 11-12-2016 09:09 AM

Sorry you're having machine issues. My good machine has been out of commission for a couple weeks now and in the shop. Hoping to have it back by Thanksgiving! There is always something to do though :) My sewing room ALWAYS need organizing and cleaning.

Yesterday was a very productive day. My friend and I both managed to get our dahlia tops done (quiltsmart pattern). I was really happy with how smoothly it went together. This morning I put the binding on a charity quilt and am headed upstairs to bind a second one. After that, I hope to finish the blocks for my Judy Niemeyer quilt Ripples (from Geese Migrations). It's a Christmas present for my parents so it kind of needs to get done. I will try to post pictures later. For some reason, the pictures I took on my phone aren't appearing in my OneDrive on the laptop. Something screwy is going!

Keep on quilting, fellow quilters!

PS--I would be glad to start a VQW on Thanksgiving to run over the holiday weekend. I'll pop in and out myself as I may go out shopping Friday. And I'm hoping to put up Christmas decorations if my little demon cat, Kiko, will allow it.

MadQuilter 11-12-2016 09:58 AM

My DH had shoulder surgery so I've been helping out - amazing what that man does on a day-to-day basis. He is feeling much better today so I will have time to go to my room. First I will need to do a thorough cleaning. There are sequins from the Halloween costume EVERYWHERE. Then I'll figure out the next project.

Oh my - all us kids learned very early on to NEVER say "I'm bored" around my Mother -but we lived on a farm so there was always something to do.

Though there is always something to do, some things aren't as interesting as others - and that is how we end up with UFO's.

Have the top finished now on my chevron scrappy lap quilt. My design wall is just a flannel sheet on a curtain rod, so the quilt top looks skewed... it's not really! ;)

Oh I like that Thimblebug, wish my slash blocks were going together as quickly, compared to the 16 patches these slashes are taking forever.

sewbizgirl 11-12-2016 12:44 PM

Macybaby, I love your little shoo-flys with all the tiny pieces. Can't wait to see that quilt all put together.

Thimblebug, your scrappy chevron looks GREAT. So much fun with all those fabrics.

Oops! I knew I should have gone back and verified it was the same block. Oh well, it's a great block and a lovely quilt no matter what the block is called.

Macybaby 11-12-2016 04:17 PM

ohh- love all the pictures!

I've got all the blocks put together. I think this is the layout I'm going with. The nine patch are placed randomly, and I'm not going to worry about them.

My design wall is a pad hung over a projector screen. It's too floppy for things to stick, so I have to pin everything. Still works much better than what I did before - lay it all out on the bed.

I was going to make it square, but I like this better - 50" x 65". I'm considering a border, but not sure if I want to deal with any more little pieces.

sewbizgirl 11-12-2016 04:39 PM

That is a KNOCKOUT, Cathy! Just amazing. It needs to go in a quilt show. I totally understand that feeling of being done with all the small pieces, but if you think it needs a border I'd suggest you take a break and then finish it up the way it deserves. If you think it needs a border, don't skip it! Just my opinion.

Lol, I'm still laying out everything on the bed!

My goodness, Macybaby, that's wonderful!!

Really, I'm loving all the pics!
So, I got a little done last night, and some done today on my LA challenge quilt. There are three blocks that repeat around a center block, with different colorways on each block.
I had made the joke with my group that I was going to "dress up like Judi Madsen" since I started this on Halloween, and "maybe I'll be able to quilt like Judi".

I'm over halfway done... so maybe with a little more time tonight, and some time tomorrow, this will be ready for my LA guild meeting next Saturday. I don't have a robot system, this is all done either FMQ or with rulers. I picked out the blocks from "501 Rotary Cut Blocks" by Judy Hopkins.
My LA only has an 18" throat, so I had to roll it half-way through doing the center block. The finished quilt will be about 42" square.

sewbizgirl 11-12-2016 04:42 PM

Wow, your LA quilting is gorgeous, Leta. Wish I could do that!

Than you very much, Sewbizgirl! I still have a LONG way to go to get where I want to be.

If you have a longarm, my two absolute favorite teachers are Judi Madsen and Lisa Calle. Both of them have iQuilt classes that are wonderful. And while I have only taken "virtual" classes with them, they are both lovely ladies, so friendly and helpful!!
I have two of Lisa's DVD's, and several of her Pro-Line rulers; I have Judi's first book, and her DVD of the iQuilt class, and I am waiting anxiously for her second book, due out any day now.

Three things that I have learned...
one - when you're doing fill work (pebbles, micro-stipples, etc), take your machine OFF of the stitch regulator. Learn to get comfortable with using the manual setting on your machine.
two - double-batting and VERY fine weight thread create AMAZING results
three - practice, practice, PRACTICE!!

I've never had an "in person" class in quilting - not piecing, not longarm, nothing. I even set my longarm up all by myself (I bought it online from Sewing Machines Plus - clear across the country!!)

I have a Viking Mega Quilter 18x8 - same thing as a Tin Lizzie - on a wooden frame.

I'm just one of those weird people who not only read directions that come with a toy/tool/appliance/whatever, I can UNDERSTAND the directions!! :)

I had a boss once who thought I must be an alien, as I can read most anything technical and understand it. (In my "real" job, I'm a computer person)

Love all these pictures!!! Here is what I just started. Need to get it done by Christmas.....LOL

Snooze2978 11-12-2016 07:46 PM

Letawellman, I started out with the Viking MegaQuilt 9" on a Grace Pro frame. Loved the way the viking stitched out and I never seem to have any thread tension issue, no matter what thread I used. Only drawback was the throat depth, 9" didn't give you much to play with so moved up to a stretched Juki 18" on the same frame and now I'm up to a 26" Innova. I use robotics but would love to have your talent with freemotion. Love all the variation you did on your blocks.

Macybaby 11-13-2016 03:42 AM

Leta- that looks so nice! I also love ruler work. I bought the robotics for my HQ about a year after getting it, mostly because my husband decided he'd like to quilt too, and he's only interested in robotics. But he does some pretty neat stuff, and we both took a class on Art & Stitch last fall. With that, one can spend way more time setting up a computer driven pattern than just doing it free hand.

After looking at yours, it makes me want to take my time on the two panels, but I have to remember I've got two tops in the pile that deserve FM design, and I can play with them.

rryder 11-13-2016 04:26 AM

Great pics everyone! My internet's on the fritz so I have been having trouble getting the pics to load to see what everyone is working on. If my connection stays up I'll try to upload a pic of what I'm working on-- finishing up the Fmq/ thread painting on a collaborative project and trying to get some more done on the UFO that I want to get completed this month.

Rob

tkhooper 11-13-2016 04:54 AM

excellent progress, and great quilts. I've been away to pages and I can't remember everything from one page to another. I'm still plugging along. I don't go fast but i keep going.

Okay, if my internet connection will stay up for long enough to upload it, here's a pic of the piece that's on my design wall. I'm getting ready to add texture in the pink areas to reflect the waviness that's there, using invisafil thread. The black area is going to get a few blue pebbles here and there and then some heavy texture using black bottom line. Then thread painting to finish unifying it, and maybe some appliquéd on black silk velvet. Will bind it in black and hang it like a quilt with a sleeve in back.

Rob

sewbizgirl 11-13-2016 07:01 AM

Wow, rryder... what an art piece! Awesome.

Now you LAQers have me looking at long arm machines! Black Friday sales are coming up.

meyert 11-13-2016 07:08 AM

I love this! everyone's pictures are great and the projects are awesome!

I am working on a youth size quilt for a Families Helping Families donation quilt for a 4 year old little boy for Christmas (to give him with some hotwheels :) )

I just finished putting borders on my first crazy scrappy quilt - whew this one is a job :) 87" square. I am going to try to layer everything together today.

I will post pictures if I have the energy to move the furniture to get enough floor space to lay it out :)

Macybaby 11-13-2016 08:36 AM

Got the blocks sewn together. I've got some ideas for borders, I need to see if I can use EQ7 and see how they would look. I'm a novice with the program.

thimblebug6000 11-13-2016 09:04 AM

Macybaby, your quilt top is stunning, love how the colours run on the diagonal like that.
