Virtual Quiling Weekend -- November 11 - 13, 2016
Welcome to the Veteran's Day Virtual Quilting Weekend. Hopefully many of you will be able to join me this weekend in some type of quilt related activity. My plan is to hopefully finish a few projects that just need a little more work to complete. Also, tomorrow a friend and I are working on a dahlia (Quiltsmart version). Hopefully that goes smoothly, I'm not too sure about the middle steps! If you are new to VQW, we post on this thread what we're working on, pictures are welcome. We encourage each other, and often inspire each other for future projects :) Since I'm working on some things today, I decided to go ahead and start the thread a little early. Can't wait to see what all of you are working on.

I've got a lot on my plate. My two daughters are each getting married next summer/fall and I've promised TOPS (at least) by the wedding dates. My younger is first and agreed to a double wedding ring, which I haven't made before. She selected Judy Neimeyer's Flowers for my Wedding Ring with seven 'single color' gradated colorways in batiks. I've finished the color segments and will be attaching the corners and melons starting tomorrow. This daughter also stole my Bernina 150 Virtuoso and I've done all the paper piecing on my featherweight. I can't fight her too much for my Bernia as she's sewing her own wedding gown, based on dissatisfaction with what's commercially available (Like Father, Like Daughter?).
I'll see how curved seams work out on the featherweight, else I might be in the market for a new (or new to me) machine! |
Hello !
If I can find time this weekend I'd like to join in. Need to get started on my daughter's quilt. I have the fabrics (kaffe fassett florals -- not necessarily my favorites but she wants them), and a very rough pattern that I'm going to have to interpret. Hoping to get that done, and to start cutting fabrics ... |
I'll join in ......... since the weather is getting cooler here in AZ. I really need to finish the quilting on my hubby's quilt. Plus my Bonnie Hunter mystery Allietare is still in pieces.

Thank you for hosting this weekend, it is Remembrance Day here in Canada tomorrow so we also have a long weekend. I will try to get my scrappy chevron blocks joined into a lap sized top.
|
My Asian scrappy road gas about one hour left on the binding. Then there are four blocks for $5 quilt club before the meeting tomorrow. Then finish quilting the Christmas wall hanging and bind it. Then back to quilting the Diamond Star Log Cabin for the rest of the weekend.
|
Thanks for another great VQW to come Raggiemom, I'm in the middle of putting blocks together for an Arkansas Crossroads quilt so I'm in.
|
I will join the crowd! I need to make binding and bind a quilt for my great-niece, plus I have a Linus Project quilt that I'm making with random cat prints, plus a few pinwheels, that needs some loving attention. Also I need to clean and reorganize my sewing room. Should be a busy weekend!
|
Having finished my Boomerang swap blocks, I can once again focus on the shadow box quilt for my nephew.
|
I'll be having a root canal Friday morning, but if all goes well, I'd like to work more at piecing the Five EAsy Pieces quilt I'm making for my friend.
|
Love your scrappy chevron, Thimblebug!
Yes, I'll join you all in a big sewing weekend. I have plenty of quilts to work on... Will show progress as I go along. Pictures are more fun than words, no? :p |
My husband went hunting and left the girls (13 and 15) and me home for the weekend. I'll be trying to finish the quilting on an EPP star quilt ( queen sized) and also spray basting 5 quilts that I finished 2 weeks ago at quilting retreat. Today is Sew Club at church. It's going to be a great weekend.
|
Our small quilting group is going on a shop hop Saturday. Only 4-5 going so we can all go in one vehicle. There are 7 quilt shops participating each in a different town in our rural community so there is some driving involved. Maybe Sunday I can finish a spring wall hanging.
|
I too started my quilty sew day late yesterday afternoon. I am working of putting together my Scrappy Hunter Star blocks. I joined jclinganary's block swap the last couple of months. I made and received enough blocks to make a queen size quilt and a lap quilt. The lap quilt is almost done. It just needs to have a final border. I will post photos in a little while. I must get my errands done and a load of laundry done before I can have fun.
|
I'm going to be spending a lot of time helping DH with putting the upper floor in on our grain bin conversion. I'm going to be storing my excess sewing cabinets in there.
In between, I plan on working on my OMG quilt I was working on the last VQW we did. I've got all the 2" squares complete, so now I'll be putting them together to make the 5" 9 patch blocks. At least it's no longer like working with confetti! |
We are using this weekend to autumn clean our home but I'm hoping to make two Christmas stockings and make a start on three cloth "buckets" for Christmas presents. Thanks for organising.

Been working on a paper piecing project called Arcadia. Left it alone most all week till late last night. Now I want to at least the the 12 sections to each block assembled together. Found out I'd stitched a couple sections together wrong so frogged them before I headed for bed. Didn't want that to stare me in the face this morning. My goal is to get all 12 blocks assembled and then if time, cut the triangles that go around them. Don't need to have this project finished for another year but don't want to wait till the last moment either as I still have to decide on quilting patterns. I'm splitting the original pattern into 2 lap size quilts and by adding another section of triangles on either side will make them around 70L x 60W each. I'm using mostly batiks as shown in the photo and will also be using 2 different navy blues for the background.

Thanks Raggiemom for hosting again.
I'm joining in. I enjoy reading everyone's posts and looking at the wonderful projects. 2 great pictures already. Things I will be working on today: cutting up some donated, irregularly-shaped, remnants into squares or strips a donation quilt top cleaning off my cutting tables sewing scrappy 2.5" squares into 4 patches(leader/ender project for donation quilt top) sewing dresdan blades together- I am sewing them side-by-side and not peaking them as they are leftovers from a project where I decided to make bigger blades. :). Time to get them sewn together and into a scrappy quilt. (2nd leader/ender project.) Connie |
I'm going to do another block or two on the Splendid Sampler quilt I'm enjoying so much! And also some hand quilting on my Dresden while watching football. Go Seahawks!
|
Suz - I have that pattern too! I really like how yours is turning out. I bought the fabric and have had it and the pattern in a box for over a year.
I think the part that is holding me back is I don't really like the grey. Maybe I'd prefer it with a pastel or something. |

I'm in! I'm working on a western themed quilt for our Rodeo Queen's banquet raffle in a few weeks. Looking forward to a weekend of sewing. All your projects inspire me! Thanks!

Thank you for again hosting this VQW!! The main thing on my plate is binding a charity quilt that will be displayed at church NEXT Sunday. It's been hanging around for a couple years now. Haven't done much sewing in the last couple weeks as I have had company twice and son and DIL coming in on the 20th for Thanksgiving. Haven't seen them in over a year and a half, so anxious about that. I'll post a pic when I finish the binding and decide what else to work on.

I'm loving all the pics!
Unfortunately, I'm not off today. However, I AM getting to "work from home" (dial in on the computer) so I won't have the commute to deal with, so I may be able to participate a little today, more tomorrow, and some on Sunday. I REALLY have to complete the quilt that is on my frame by Sunday night. It is the "challenge quilt" my longarm group does each year. I'll post pics ASAP once I finish. Fingers crossed for a REALLY productive day tonight and tomorrow. Thanks for hosting this - I'm hoping someone will do another over the "Black Friday" weekend, and I will NOT be fighting the horde of shoppers that day!! |
I'm going to be starting a retirement quilt for the receptionist in our office building. She's retiring mid December and I mostly have weekends to quilt so I need to get moving! Fabrics are ironed and laid out and ready to go and I put most of the stuff from Quilt Festival away this week. I'm ready!

This is my layout of the children's sampler quilt I'm making. I think I'm going to make sashings out of purple and cornerstones of bright green. The quilt is a bit orange-heavy, so I'm hoping the sashings help balance that out.

That's going to be gorgeous, Thimblebug
I'm working on finishing up the first of the collaborative pieces that I started with another artist this past summer. It's taken me a while to figure out how to put it all together into a coherent whole that's ready for hanging, but I think I've got a plan I can work with--lot's of thread painting. Rob |
Suze, that is a gorgeous pattern. Good idea to take your time with this quilt.
|
sewbizgal, love the bright and cheerful colors. I'm working on the quilting of my hubby's quilt and I'm almost ready to roll this section down, then I'll be at the halfway point.

I can't decide where to go with this. Add more brown? Another blue? More green? It's 60"x 80" now and I'm wanting 100" x100".

Here's my quilt sashed... I didn't have enough purple so I alternated the purple and green, and used red for cornerstones instead.
My board friend Givio made two of these blocks for me... the red with the snowman in the center, and one with the 5 sock monkeys! |
Great pictures everyone, thanks! Need to get back in there and keep pulling the paper off my blocks!
|
My quilting weekend includes catching up on this board! I haven't yet figured out how to access from my iPad and can't do it from work, so it always has to wait for a weekend and for too many of those, I've been out of town. I'm grateful for the extra day this weekend because it means time to do some baking, cook a special meal AND spend some time in my quilting room. Today is organization and planning. Hope to have some pictures by Sunday.

Such pretty projects in the works! I have all the 16 patches put together and the slash squares sewn and pressed, I laid them out and arranged them last night and decided to do two more rows to make it longer so just completed the last of them:
I'll post another pic after I get the slashes into blocks and everything arranged in their final layout. |
My plans for the weekend is to complete this month's clue for Misty Meadows mystery :). We be looking forward to seeing what everyone e,she is working on. Thank you for hosting

I like everyone's projects so far.
Since the last VQA, I finished my 72 - 2 1/2" log cabin blocks. So I will sew the blocks together and finish the top. then I will finish quilting a UFO table runner. Then it is time to clear off my quilting machine and set up for working on quilting for practice. I need to sew a block to exchange and mail on Wednesday. In between all of these projects I will be washing and ironing my fabric for Bonnie Hunter's mystery quilt. |

MacyBaby, if you go out into Pinterest or whatever its called and put in "Arcadia" you'll see a lot of variations to this pattern. One that I really liked was made up with only black and white plus one other color. So many different versions of this quilt with choices of colors and how the colors are placed. Makes mine look plain as I'm just going with what the pattern calls for.
Thankfully I like paper piecing or I'd never had started it. Have made so many errors on it but I'm plugging thru them all. |
Does pressing a top count? Check! Found a spot that needed to be taken out and re-stitched, where the fabric had rolled under and into the seam. Fixed that. Tomorrow I've been asked to take notes at a quilt guild budget meeting for someone who has to work. Well... it IS quilt RELATED!

I recognize that folded corner block. I love the quilt. The sashing balances it nicely.
