I may join. I'm working on the General's Wife quilt and I am caught up on the BOM but I'm making the quilt kit to make it king size. I have 4 blocks of 20 done so I could work on that. I also have a quilt I want to quilt and it would be a good day to do that. See you tomorrow!!

vickig626 07-14-2012 08:20 AM

I'm hoping to get some of my Bonnie Hunter's Orca Bay worked on a little. My son is home visiting from college this weekend and goes back Sunday after he takes me out for a belated birthday dinner. So not sure how much I'll get done.

kyquiltlover1942 07-14-2012 09:46 AM

I will be joining you. I will be working on my charm quilt. Hope to get it finished and ready for the frame by tomorrow.

nanquilt 07-14-2012 11:25 AM

What a terrific idea. I will be stitching most of the afternoon. Thank you for suggesting such a wonderful event.

Yay!! Always nice to start with a clean room for sure. :)

I am doing some sewing today. I think I needed to in order to finish tomorrow where I want to. Making good progress.
I don't know why telling a bunch of virtual people that I have a sewing goal makes me focus and accomplish stuff but it does. Otherwise, I just caught up in lots of other chores and errands. Thanks so much for thinking of this!

carolaug 07-14-2012 03:07 PM

I have been trying to quilt all day today...on and off all day...tomorrow I hope to be here all day!!! Love you guys...this really helps to modivate me...!!

Vanogay 07-14-2012 03:34 PM

I planned to sew tomorrow right after church, but DH says he wants to go to hobby store first to get something for his model railroad. I really can't say no as he is so good when I buy things for quilting. SO, I'll be a little later starting, but I plan to be with you in spirit ALL day - even if I'm only sewing for half of it. I have two projects started and want to finish them both - both are hand work and both are to be entered in contests coming up soon.

beckyboo1 07-14-2012 03:51 PM

I finished my first wall hanging today and plan to work on the backing for my first quilt tomorrow!

Nelco 07-14-2012 04:14 PM

sounds fun...But I am not at my apt untill the 18th so will not be able to join :( I may check in now-n-then to see what is happening

mcdaniel023 07-14-2012 04:55 PM

Last time, I planned to join in. Sewed all day and then remembered I was supposed to check in. I have plenty of projects going and will spend the day binding, basting and maybe starting a new project. I just have to remember to take the laptop and camera to my studio, too. LOL! See you in the morning.

VivianW 07-14-2012 05:28 PM

Oh my gosh - just reading this and have been wanting to get a RWB rail fence wall hanging done - so I'm in!!! Thanks for doing this! I've got to "jump in bed" so I can get up earlier to get lunch in the crock pot and get everything ready for quilting!

oldcatlady 07-14-2012 05:29 PM

I plan on being there, my first time :) I have so many blocks from swaps that I might try to get sewn together into tops. Have a lap quilt and full quilt to work on too so have plenty to pick from! Will be here mid morning, have the coffee on :)

allie1448 07-14-2012 05:50 PM

I so wish I could join in! I have my husbands daughter and grandchildren visiting! But i will be showing her the fabricsi have in mind for a quilt, ten minute block, i have planned. Does this count?

Everose 07-14-2012 07:08 PM

I'm in. I quilted and bound a Christmas throw today. Now i just need to finish the hand work on it. I can't wait to show you, because this is a UFO that I started 2 years ago. So there have been some "design" changes. First time I have ever made a braided border, but I really like the looks of it.

So will see you all in the morning.

noveltyjunkie 07-14-2012 10:27 PM

I'm in!
In fact, since it is already Sunday afternoon where I live, I am already sewing.....

Thank you so much Rachel for doing this. I am working on a project I started with great enthusiasm but poor preparation (nothing unusual there lol).

I saw a scrappy pattern on one of the those great online sites that has heaps, and I printed it out and, I feel sure, bookmarked it. Now I have lost the printout, AND the bookmark!

No worries, I wasnt going to copy the pattern exactly anyhow. Plus, I made it smaller (and made an error in scaling down, as I accidentally scaled down the seam allowance as well....)

I have had trouble with this one from the start- my usual problem is not understanding value well enough to have enough contrast, without making the eye jump everywhere. So I picked four colours (yellow, green, brown, pink)and then picked fabrics that were too similar in value and did heaps of cutting up and sewing, all to achieve very little by way of an obvious pattern..... so, I decided to space out the rows with plain coloured borders. This also helps disguise the fact that the measurements are not so good! (No idea how wide those borders need to be to make the thing look halfway balanced, but, at this point, am not caring much.)

Note to self: if you are doing a scrappy with a row of tumbler blocks and a double row of squares, etc, you really do need for the total width of the quilt to be evenly divisible by the size of each tumbler and each square- oopsie!!! I am beyond that point now, and it will just have to include some half sized blocks- who cares? I just want it DONE!

We are moving house and I need to tidy out my sewing room- there is no way this project is being packed up as a series of strips that are not even all the right length- out with the fabrics and more HSTs and piano keys to be added......

YAY- I am going to NAIL this thing and then I am NEVER doing a project like this again!!!!!!

I am thinking now that, since the thing is so small, I might use it as a medallion later and make a bed quilt out of it. Or not, lets see what it looks like first!

I hope some of you are up before I go to bed........

good morning...figured I would take a picture and have a cup of coffee before I start....I need to sew more strips, cut and sew on the top and bottom sashing, I also just put my white fabric into the washing machine. I have decided to make the next border/sashing white. So far I am pleased on how its coming out. I have 1/2 hour to cruize the quilt board first. My favorite time of the day!Its 4:34am here. Morning ALL!! Happy quilting!

carolaug 07-15-2012 12:48 AM

Is there a way to have this thread open with the last comments first? that way we would not have to scroll down all the time since we are going to be checking in through out the day.

carolaug 07-15-2012 01:01 AM

Well...its 5am here..so off to get started...so glad we have a time listed to get me off this computer and start cutting my fabrics.

gramajo 07-15-2012 01:41 AM

Good morning all. Off to work now. Enjoy and may all of you make good progress on your chosen project(s). See you later this afternoon.

I know what you're saying. But I just find "being accountable" (even to virtual people) helps me get stuff done. I may be a little late in starting because I seem to have insomnia tonight so will be dragging come morning. But I know exactly what I'll be doing & trust me... I will be doing it! I suppose I could get up & sew now but I'm afraid that would wake me up too much so will just wait & work on my Jelly Roll Race later in the day. It'll be too hot (AGAIN!) to do anything else, so sewing it'll be! Yay! C y'all later!

noveltyjunkie 07-15-2012 02:09 AM

burch- we are not virtual people- I, for one, am all too REAL!
carolaug- your project looks super cute. How are you getting on with it now?
I have stopped for a dinner break.
My sewing room is half tidy, and my annoying little quilt-in-progress is now in two pieces, instead of six.....

I am not sure, but when you are away from the computer for a bit and then come back to the thread, before you go into it, next to the title on the left you will notice a little blue circle with two white arrows pointing down. click this and you will be taken only to the new posts in the thread. This should help you find the new stuff quicker!!

athenagwis 07-15-2012 02:25 AM

Just wanted to let everyone know, the actual thread for Virtual Quilt Day has been posted. You can find it here:

Head on over to tell us your goals for the day!!

Good morning all you cyber friends! I am up; that is about all I can say right now. It is 7:25 AM here. I need to get dressed and eat some breakfast and then I will be hard at it all day. I have my Monopoly quilt ready to bind, and the valentiney quilt almost ready to quilt. Will take some pics in a bit. Then I will start something else, I think. I do have another quilttop to quilt. Will check in again in a bit.

Too keep up with the new posts, I just keep the thread open on my screen, when I check back in I just back up one page and then come back to the current page and all the new posts are there.

I have 34 more of these blocks to square up and then I can start working on the actual quilt. Have to take a break to go to church but after that I should be able to quilt all day!

grann of 6 07-15-2012 04:23 AM

Okay, I am all set up in my basement sewing studio, with the "slow" computer on and ready to go. Now that I am down here, I have to go back up to the quilting room and get the thread I am using to stitch down the binding on the monopoly quilt. There will be lots of exercise going on here (up and down the stairs).:D

I must be in a fog this morning, but I have two questions: Scrap sack 2's? and Biscuit quilt? Both sound interesting.

LOL - you sound like me and my DH.....best time for me to sew is when he's taking his afternoon nap or watching sports...

Love it !! I made one earlier this year for my adult son (he collects Monopoly games). I had a pattern and since I couldn't find the exact fabrics, I improvised on the pattern.

Julie R 07-15-2012 06:30 AM

That is sew cute! Love it!!!

I had seen the pattern that goes with the fabric, but didn't have enough of certain of the fabs. I had the border fabric left from when I had made my DGSs boxer shorts when they were about 5 & 7 years old, oldest is now turning 21.

I am now ready to start on the quilting of the valentiney quilt on the long arm. That shouldn't take too long, as it too is a planned QFK quilt.

These virtual quilt days are fun, and we should plan to hold them monthly, so we can plan ahead. It makes me want to get competitive and see how much I can get done in a day.

carolaug 07-15-2012 06:43 AM

Wow...love that Game quilt!!

Patti25314 07-15-2012 06:58 AM

Is it time to take a break yet?

I FINALLY got the last borders on a quilt top for my daughter and now need to finish cutting the pieces I need for my sister's Xs and Os quilt. I always follow along with you all, but never manage to get much done. This time I am determined to sew along too. I couldn't get a pic of the finished top, but here is one of it before the last borders, just imagine it having a 5" black border.

Oh I wish I could join. I got so much done last time. I am doing laundry. Also I invited my parents and Uncle for dinner. GOing to celebrate my daughters birthday. It was last week but she was working. I am baking a whole chicken with mashed potatoes and carrots and gravy. I made a chocolate praline cake for dessert. I have to pick my parents up as they don't drive to my house any more, it is 30 minutes each way. I will also have to them home later. I might get to join you guys later tonight. Maybe I will hold my own quilt day tomorrow since I wil miss most of this one. Will check in later
