Virtual quilting weekend—December 17-19, 2022

Welcome to VQW. What will you be working on this weekend? I have works in process, block of the week clues and organizing on my list. We’ll see how much gets done. 😀

I will offer a VQW December 31-January 2 if people are interested. Next regular one will be January 14-17, 2022.

rryder 12-16-2021 04:49 PM

Yay! I’ll be working on quilting my September colorblock quilt. I might also work on my doodle quilt if I finish the colorblock.

And I will be looking forward to the Dec. 31- Jan. 2 VQW- glad you decided to offer one for that time period!

Thanks for hosting.

Rob

pulled out a UFO from ?. What is cut is parralellagrams and hexagons. The fabrics have been narrowed down and a general layout planned.
I'm hoping.

happylab 12-16-2021 05:37 PM

Heather thank-you for hosting this thread and the extra threads too. I plan to do the NYD event too.

I am still working on my BHMQ- 2020 top. My goal to complete that top. And start/work on a dragon top for a gift for a GNephew. It’s not a Christmas gift. Plus finish 3 parts of BHMQ-21. I’m 1/2 or more done an 3 parts. Part 1 needs squaring , part 2 needs sewn and squared. Part 3 needs to be sewn on part 1. And cut out part 4 which will be released tomorrow morning. I will get up tomorrow and start sewing early.

WMUTeach 12-16-2021 05:52 PM

Thank you for hostessing us once again.

I will be working on creating the remaining three blocks for the Alcott Civil War Quilt. I have chosen an on-point setting and have the setting blocks created. If I get the three blocks finished I can begin to make the setting triangles and start putting the rows together.

As always there is a bit of cleaning up to do in my quilting room but that should not take more than.....20 minutes. We shall see which rabbit trails, I end up following.

Railroadersbrat 12-16-2021 06:10 PM

Thank you for hosting again, Heather. Merry Christmas everyone.

I will be making a couple of quilted organizers this weekend, along with a couple of quilted pouches for a 12" x 24" cutting mat and a 14" x 14" rotating mat and if I have time, another organizer that will hang. I decided to take part in Karen Brown's Declutter 2022 challenge, I've got a few things coming this weekend that will help me get organized once we start decluttering in January, including a shoe rack I'm converting into extra storage and a cutting and ironing station, the pouches for the cutting mats and the hanging organizer are going on the rack.

In between that, I'll be checking on my younger sister. She gave us a tremendous scare last Friday and had to have her Sigmoid Colon removed after a bowel perforation. She's doing much, much better and hopefully will be going home tomorrow (Friday) to start healing at home. I've been an absolute wreck this week, I'm exhausted but having some projects to work on will help settle me down. This VQW couldn't have come at a better time.

Rff1010 12-16-2021 06:31 PM

I have pulled out a bunch of pink and grey scraps. I am making stars - working on my flying geese precision. I have 15 made (8") and have cut material for another 12. I will alternate with a 4 patch eventually. Nobody in mind for it but the blocks are coming out super cute.

tallchick 12-17-2021 02:42 AM

Thanks for hosting again Heather! This has been a very hectic month and I am looking forward to this weekend, and I am definitely looking forward to the New Years weekend one as well. I am still working on my Allitare quilt, my goal is to get 4 a day done then I can move onto the final setting triangles. I am looking forward to seeing what everyone is working on.

jmoore 12-17-2021 04:24 AM

Thank you Heather…I am working desperately to get my California Firegfighter son’s tshirt quilt done and off in the mail. I just need to bind the darn thing and put a label on it. I have a dear friend who is coming to help sew the binding on. Will post picture later this weekend. I also have some Christmas placemats I would like to make up for gifts.

donac 12-17-2021 05:26 AM

Thank you for hosting again. I will be machine quilting a baby quilt tomorrow and Sunday morning will be making the last two reading pillows. I made 4 the other day and quilted another baby quilt and mailed them out yesterday.

I will like the end of Dec weekend. I will be starting to hand quilt my son's quilt and starting to piece my other son's quilt.

Iceblossom 12-17-2021 05:26 AM

Thanks for another VQW! I'm just sitting down with my first cup of coffee for the day and updating the Bonnie Hunter Mystery clue for this week -- so that's my project for this weekend. Hubby initially was scheduled to work tomorrow but a machine is down and the parts are stuck in transit/supply chain issues...

Bonnie's clue this week has quite a bit of encouragement for the participants that we can do this and is giving a bit of slack for getting caught up/some of us having a busy week. For all of us, I'd like to offer some encouragement and give you all some slack, too.

I struggle with my mental health, last year at this time I was deep into a major depressive episode. It was bad. This year I am upright and quilting and it is better. We've all been under a lot of external pressures and some of us need to be reminded to take care of ourselves too. For me, this weekend at least that does involve sewing time -- and there are bubble baths in my future :)

SusieQOH 12-17-2021 06:00 AM

Thanks for hosting, Heather!
I just got my next clue in the BH mystery so I expect to work on that. I can't believe I'm caught up so far. That never happens! :D

Karamarie 12-17-2021 06:17 AM

Husband mentioned Christmas Eve is only a week from today so I have to finish a scrapbook of my Grandson's school sports career. He graduated this past spring and is now in college. I am using mostly newspaper articles of his school days and it has become a time consuming task. Why do I get myself into these projects??? Cause I love those Grands. I covered my sewing machine up a couple of weeks ago so am not doing any quilting, but will peak in on how you folks are doing. Merry Christmas to you all!

Gemm 12-17-2021 07:10 AM

I'd like to think I'm going to join in this weekend but am not sure what that will look like. I'm in between projects at present and don't have a clear plan for a new one (lots of ideas - just nothing definite). I think I'd like to find a few minutes somewhere to reorganize my stash - it has grown considerably in the last couple of months and I've got to figure out a system that has room for all of my latest acquisitions. There have been so many great ideas for getting things sorted in Mission:Organization, Scraps? and some of the other threads that I'm actually looking forward to this process (and not just because it means I can play with fabric!).

Good luck with your VQW goals, everyone!

QuiltMom2 12-17-2021 07:15 AM

I've gotten a QOV all ready to load on the longarm, there's an ongoing small scrap piecing project (one of those "OMG! What was I thinking when I started this?") and today I'm delivering a quilt to my friend so she can finish sewing the binding on by hand. Still cutting batik scraps for the same friend.

QuiltingVagabond 12-17-2021 08:00 AM

Merry Christmas VQW buddies! I'm not sure how much sewing I will get done this weekend as we have 2 family celebrations to attend and along with that comes baking, wrapping, etc...
But if I do get into the sewing room, I have Clue 3 of the BH mystery ready to sew - and Clue 4 was just released.
I treated myself to a couple of adorable sewing baskets from Liberty of London, so I would love to fill them up with sewing supplies! I will try to get some pictures to share, they are sweet and nostalgic!

Happy Friday, everyone! I am working on various blocks for a t shirt quilt. I do not have enough t shirts to make a good sized quilt, so I am supplementing it with extra blocks and building on the tshirts to make larger blocks out of them. Here is some of what I finished up yesterday and today using the small sleeve/ front chest logos.

Rainy Friday Update

Woke up just a little while ago to thunder and rain, supposed to be this way for the remainder of the day and into this evening. Nothing severe that I know of, just a good, ol' fashioned chilly fall rain. We were in need of it.

The first organizer is almost done, just have to attach the sides and put the bias binding on. While I love the organizer, how it's made is something I am going to have to fiddle when I make the next one. When I put the binding on, I'm going to be going over spots that has as many as ten layers of fabric, interfacing and the foam stabilizer.

After my wakeup cup of coffee, it's back to the organizer, then I'll be working on the quilted pouches for my cutting mats and sewing 4" x 4" squares together for the next organizers.

Raggiemom 12-17-2021 03:27 PM

happylab--I have a friend who loves dragon stuff, she's made some really cute stuff.

railroadersbrat--perhaps I should check out this declutter challenge :)

Iceblossom--depression has hit many people hard the last year and a half. I'm glad you're taking care of yourself.

I spent much of the day doing some reorganizing of my sewing room. Looks a little messy at the moment! I will be glad when I'm done. Tomorrow I quilt with a couple friends at local shop so that will be fun.

Quiltah Mama 12-17-2021 05:14 PM

Oh yay..... VQW..... I've been thinking this should be coming up soon. I am so in..... I have a quilt to make for Christmas still. I will be working on a picture quilt for my parents. My dad has been requesting for a few years now a picture quilt of his great grandkids, and this is the year it will happen. I am using Bubble Jet for the first time, so excited. My preference for a picture quilt is one that the picture is printed on the fabric and not a sheet you iron onto the fabric.
I'm so grateful for this board and for all of you. I am so inspired by what I read about and see and learn about on here. I look forward to seeing what you all will create this weekend. Thank you Heather for hosting and for keeping VQW going.

I have finished my December monkey from the bom at www.pumpkinpatchbc.com that I have been enjoying this year. I have chosen the sashing fabric and hope to get the top completed this weekend. Enjoy reading what everyone is working on and planning.
LAF2019 great idea of incorporating those smaller tshirt logos into blocks!

Attachment 636874 This is hard to mentally put together in a picture and on the floor of my studio. The large parrellellagrams were cut years ago. I don't know how I determined the size. I'm immitating the pattern Big Blossom Quilt. It has to be flipped from side to side and reshaped from squares.
I've narrowed the fabric choices. It is starting to find permanent places for the pieces. I'll keep rearranging the puzzle pieces and show another pic later.

Organization is an absolutely worthy VQW goal. And devoting some brainpower to scrap management.... Definitely. These might not be the "sexy" part of quilting but it's essential.

LifeLovePassion 12-18-2021 03:33 AM

2 Christmas gatherings will keep me from doing much this weekend. However this morning, I thought of a quick sew project. A phone pouch to snap on a bunk bed rail after hearing my oldest's phone fall in there middle of the night.

I also have a bit of organizing to do as I got some free fabric leftovers from someone on my local FB group. I will keep what I can use and bring the rest to my sewing group.

WMUTeach 12-18-2021 03:52 AM

Reporting in on Saturday morning.....................

I made one more block for the Alcott Civil War Quilt, then spent time staring at the quilt on the design wall and decided to add narrow sashing to break up the large amount of background. I also rearranged the blocks to create a better balance of color and "weight" of the blocks rather than placing the blocks in month by month order.

One block cut and ready for stitching but the final one was missing some directions and I have asked the Facebook group for help.

Ta-Da! Cleaned up most of the messiness of my sewing room. Another 5 minutes and it will be ready to mess up again! ;) Picture of progress later.

SusieQOH 12-18-2021 06:49 AM

I did a lot of cutting for the BH mystery but we watched Christmas movies while I worked. Made it a lot nicer!

Iceblossom 12-18-2021 08:47 AM

Didn't do any sewing yesterday but did some general house organizing stuff. On Thursday I had pulled out my big box of wrapping paper and stuff and decided I was done storing wrapping paper. Then I went through things already determined as going to the Goodwill and pulled a bunch of suitable stocking stuffer type things, Many brand new (goofy seahawk gag gifts, adult coloring books), others slightly worn, some vintage like a couple of wooden Hummel music boxes from the 70s. A lot of holiday tins like you put baked goods in, my gift was Chex mix and I needed the big ones but sometimes they came in sets with smaller ones inside that I didn't use -- but great for those cookie and fudge makers.

Hubby took the two boxes to work on Friday with a free sign and for the first year in decades I don't have to navigate that box in and out of the closet... People had fun and I got rid of stuff it was a win/win :)

I got some of those Mr Clean Erasers last time I went to Costco and used them on my upper kitchen cabinets which look much better. I took off the handles off the door panels so I could get a good scrub and they indeed did a great job. When the hubby came home he asked, "What smells good??" Apparently it was the scent of cleaning products which is sadly not that familiar smell in our household.

Today I need to pull a couple more fabrics and I will start cutting my "garnet" for the Bonnie Hunter mystery. Any good smells are going to come from whatever I'm cooking!

Good afternoon everyone

Heather - I missed last year's declutter challenge by a few weeks, but I was able to do it anyway and when I saw she was going to do it again for 2022, I had to jump on board. Karen is a fabulous coach; I watch her YouTube channel daily and most of her tips and tricks to keep my sewing space clean and tidy has stayed with me. It starts January 1st and runs through January 21st, there's a Facebook group that you can join and she's got a whole playlist of nothing but decluttering tips and tricks on her channel. The link to the declutter challenge is below. I've already been having things pop up in my mind on some storage solutions and how I'm going to organize things, I'm super stoked.

Declutter Challenge | mysite (justgetitdonequilts.com)

Speaking of decluttering, I'm going to need to do some of that when I get done with my coffee, lol. The first organizer ended up in the trash, I'm just not impressed at all with the way that organizer is supposed to go together, but the good thing is that I've figured out some things to make it a thousand times easier and I'll be able to whip up another one. I do have the pouch for my 12 x 24 cutting mat almost done, all that constant rain yesterday put me out of action for a few hours, so all I have to do is finish sewing on the binding and wipe off my quilting marks I made, add some grommets and I can call that finished.

First though, coffee.

Hi,
I’ve been feverishly sewing on my ornaments quilt. Tried to post a picture but no matter how small I tried to make the picture, it wasn’t uploaded. Kept saying the file was too big. Which is a bummer because these hanging ornaments are gorgeous!! The fabrics have some metallic gold and silver. And I was at a retreat when a lady had a box of ribbons she didn’t want. Yes, really. So, I have used an iron on gold 1/4” on the edges of the ornaments. I’m using a free pattern someone suggested when I was in the planning stages. The whole quilt has 22 ornaments. I have 15 done!! The other 7 need the hanging part done. I’m hoping that by next Friday I will be able to hang my finished quilt top up on my living room wall. Plan to get it quilted after the new year. Let me try again on that picture thing.

Iceblossom 12-18-2021 01:21 PM

The file too big message is about the amount of data contained in the picture, cropping or sizing doesn't change that. Depending on how the picture was taken you need to do different things. Often the cell phones have an option for sharing that automatically reduces the file.

With my old school digital camera and desktop computer and browser options, I use this site (no affiliation) because it is quick, easy, free and doesn't set off my various protections and such.
https://www.reduceimages.com/

I plug my camera into my compute and drag the file onto the website. I use their defaults -- one click to do the reduction and then another to download it to your computer. Then I come here and upload.

BTW -- grats to you for getting as far as the "too large" message. I still miss the upload button to the far right of the file select screen about half the time. And I time out at least half the time so I've learned to copy my post before hitting Quick Reply.

edit: The Help section here has some really good help

Woohoo and oooh aaah on both the blocks and getting the picture posted!!

petthefabric 12-18-2021 01:27 PM

This is my method for getting the right size to upload.

Once I get the pictures from camera to laptop and put them into pictures file with a name I can recognize,,, I open the picture I want. Crop it so background clutter is removed. Save that. Then with file open, up on the right corner of the computer or picture screen is a symbol of 3 dots, stacked on top of each other. Click it. Click "resize". Click "2mp". Save with new name, I usually add 2mp to the name of the file. Close everything and go back to posting on QB. Be sure to use the red reply button, not quick reply.

Oh my gosh, that is gorgeous, I can't wait to see it put all together! Where did you get the pattern from - I can see a warm, cozy Christmas quilt for my sisters!

Speaking of sisters, I heard from my little sister and happy to report that she was on the way home a little while ago. She had a really hard fight all week, her white blood count kept going up and down, they couldn't get her pain managed correctly after the surgery and last night, her white blood count was almost through the roof. After a few tests and a CT-Scan to make sure there wasn't any abscesses from the infection (and there wasn't), they figured that her immune system reacted to everything with a cascade event. Her blood and vitals were perfect today and stayed that way, so they cut her loose and when she called me, her husband was taking her home the long way so she could enjoy the Christmas lights. The relief was immediate for me and now I'm energized to get stuff done!

Onto the next organizer after I brew up a pot of coffee. Will post pictures later tonight.

I have not even entered my sewing room this weekend. This is a much needed rest. I have been reading all the busy posts here. So much accomplished among all of you fine quilters. The ornament quilt is beautiful. I have saved the link to make one of these in the future. The next VQW will I will work on the Merry Mayhem mystery quilt.

Yes, yes, please share the source of your Ornament quilt pattern. It is lovely and I would like to see this one hanging in my home for the holidays next year. I would also make charming little gifts, pillows or mug rugs or door hanging or..... So many possibilities.

Looking forward to your finish or even your almost finished, finish. ;)

I just saw you had already posted later on in the thread. Looks like a good challenge for a holiday quilt for next year. Thank you, Thank you, Thank you!

Quick update for Sunday morning. I have not actually managed to touch my fabric or sewing space for organization which is a bit disappointing. However, I have had a few thoughts of where I can start without having to pull everything out and make a huge mess right before Christmas and maybe I can get a little something done before the weekend is over. Rff - I appreciate the encouragement and validation.

I am feeling good about getting 90% of my Christmas wrapping done - thanks to Iceblossom for sticking that idea in my brain! One task ticked off the list means I'm that much closer to having some time to play in fabric. :-)

So much great progress and fun projects going on - way to go, everyone!
