Virtual Quilting Weekend--10/5-10/8/18

Welcome to Virtual Quilting Weekend! I won't be on here much this weekend but will be with you in thought! Today and tomorrow I am taking workshops on using Marti Mitchell templates (feathered star and kaleidoscope). So I will be quilting :) and will check in at night. Sunday I am going out of town to present a quilt of valor and will be back Monday. My husband gets the joy of catsitting our babies while I'm gone. Hopefully when I return Monday, I will quilt in the afternoon.

So what is everyone working on this weekend? Starting to panic about Christmas presents? Don't worry, there will be two more VQW before Christmas. In fact, the next one will be November 9-11.

QuiltingVagabond 10-05-2018 04:05 AM

Good morning Heather! I won't be sewing this weekend either, because in just a few minutes we are leaving to help with set up at our guild quilt show. I have entered 5 items, we have over 160 entries! Which is a lot for this guild. So the next 3 days will be very busy.

NZquilter 10-05-2018 04:19 AM

I'm in again! Hoping to actually get something done!!

I am working on MSQC star patch pattern. I have all 340 4-patches made up, now onto 300+ hst! I'm also planning to make up a BOM block and work on the Mystery Train Ride once the next step comes out tomorrow.

Okay, dishes first, then sewing!

GingerK 10-05-2018 04:38 AM

I had hoped to finally get my sewing room back in shape after having to move everything to one side, to accommodate the needs of our electrician and plumber, during our kitchen reno. Unfortunately, the electrician is still not finished.

Plus this is Canadian Thanksgiving weekend and the kids and grands are arriving tomorrow. My kitchen is still without proper countertops (surprising what can be cobbled together with plywood and plastic table cloths :)) but the new range is hooked up and we will have a proper turkey dinner tomorrow evening. Happy sewing everyone. Wish I could join you.

luvstoquilt 10-05-2018 04:40 AM

I am going to a quilt show on Sunday in Kankakee, Illinois. So I will not be able to join in on Sunday but I will be there Saturday.

Boston1954 10-05-2018 05:52 AM

I'm in. I have to straighten up the sewing room first though. :)

thimblebug6000 10-05-2018 07:48 AM

In between Cdn. Thanksgiving food prep. I hope to join the scrappy blocks I have worked on for a few years... they are laying on the living room floor, getting rumpled by the dog, so I really need to get this done! However I am heading out at 10 with a friend, and not back until dinner time.... Tomorrow it is my walking group and then hair appt.... and Sunday is Thanksgiving dinner at DD's .... and Monday is our anniversary.... looking forward to everyone's pictures! ;)

My DD and I are going to Kankakee tomorrow.

Today I am going to connect my sailboat quilt top to the Seahawk fleece backing I have for it, I decided to not use any batting in between because I don't have any. It fits but it is very tight, only about an inch left on the selvage sides, couple of inches on the cut sides. I'm going to safety pin it and do a large clam shell all over design tomorrow on my little old machine. It's between crib/twin size and I should be ok but I have gotten spoiled to using my friend's long arm.

I prepared the binding fabric, probably finish cutting/ironing it today. Goal is to have it on the quilted down top by Tuesday small group so I can do the hand work finishing there.

I'm working on quilting the 19th Mystery Train Ride. Doubt I'll get it done as I'm working all weekend, but I'll put a dent in it.

Watson, your quilt is beautiful!

This weekend I am working on hexagon table toppers that I may use for hostess gifts at Christmas. Or maybe gifts throughout the year.

happylab 10-05-2018 12:15 PM

Good day everyone. I'm in again. My 4 day plan on quilting.
(1) Put 2 round of borders on my 9-patch quilt top. Finally. Then on Monday take it to my quilter to get quilted. (2) Make a BOM block (A new project).
(3) Make 35 BHM 2017 blocks
(4) redo 16 blocks of BHMQ 16.
(5) Cut out my new project Nebraska quilt.
(6) Get caught up on Judy's mystery train ride #20.
(7) Enjoy the process.
Expect pics along the way. Happy sewing everyone.

cashs_mom 10-05-2018 01:08 PM

I'm in for this one. I'll be working on FMQ on my little wall hanging and my big string quilt. I'm hoping to get both of them done. I'll be doing the wall hanging first as I know I can get it done and then start working on the string quilt. It's so bold and bright that I'm planning to just do some simple loop-de-loops for the FMQ so it should go pretty fast. It will be the first big quilt that I"ve FMQ'd on the Juki so it will be interesting to see how it goes.

Raggiemom 10-05-2018 02:47 PM

Happy Thanksgiving to our Canadian friends! Cheesehead, love the fabric on your table toppers. They make great gifts.

I got four of the nine blocks done for the feathered star. I will try to upload a picture later if I can. The picture is on my I-hone so we'll see how successful I am!

There are some ambitious projects planned for the weekend; good luck to all :)

Having Thanksgiving dinner with the family & grandkids ...(Canada).

retiredteacher09 10-05-2018 04:05 PM

I will be following along. I hope to sew a few hours tomorrow.

QuiltingVagabond 10-05-2018 04:53 PM

I'm home after a long day helping to set up our quilt show... there was a delay getting started due to some of the rooms being in use for morning activities ( at a senior center) but once we got in, the setup went well. Until one big section fell - domino style!!! A couple of minor injuries, all quilts survived and the first night reception went well.

I entered 4 things to be judged and got a 2nd place ribbon on one of my Bonnie Hunter quilts. But I was shocked and pleased to see a special award on another quilt of mine - a NACQJ Award of Merit rosette - for "outstanding achievement in quiltmaking"! I feel so honored! I will try to get a picture of the quilt tomorrow, don't even have a picture of the finished quilt at this time.

kristakz 10-05-2018 05:14 PM

I'm in! Not sure how much I'll get done since son #2 is home from school for Thanksgiving, and family dinner is planned for Sunday. But I should get able to carve out some time - not sure yet what's on the list, other than working on the mystery I'm writing for one of my guilds (no photo sharing, sorry, it's still a mystery). But maybe I'll get my Summer Sampler put together, and my Escher wall quilt finished.

cashs_mom 10-05-2018 05:51 PM

I got an early start tonight. I set up my Sewezi table that I got for my birthday so I'm ready to go with my new table for FMQ tomorrow!

SillySusan 10-05-2018 06:13 PM

I am delighted to join y'all. I have been slacking off lately, so this is a great way to get myself back in the quilting spirit. I have a bunch of baby quilts that are in need of bindings. Plus, I plan to put together a couple of tops. No other plans for the weekend, so I should accomplish much.

quiltingshorttimer 10-05-2018 07:17 PM

I'm only half in--spending most of tomorrow politicking and then lunch with nephew's oldest daughter who has moved to area, then some shopping on my way home. But I'm in on Sunday--quilting a customer's quilt made from some blocks that her great-grandmother pieced. Very "not flat" so tonight I've been sketching on the computer over the pictures of blocks I took--finally decided on designs--I think!

zozee 10-05-2018 07:39 PM

Maybe I'll get some sewing time, but definitely will be inspired. Going to a local quilt show on Sunday. I really loved it two years ago when I went (this particular guild only holds their every other year).

Grannies G 10-05-2018 08:01 PM

Sure wish I could but highly unlikely. Still have over 100 boxes to unpack. The movers were here last Sunday and my sewing room is totally trashed. Am dying to use my new Sweet 16. Picked it up last week and got it all put together but that was all. I have a lot of ufos to work on. Hope to see lots of pictures from everyone tno.

mrsg730 10-06-2018 12:43 AM

I will be running around all day today but will be home Sunday and Monday so I hope to get some time in my sewing room. I hope to finish my granddaughters quilt that has been on the frame for far too long, finish squaring some double sliced layer cake squares (my layer cake was way off) and hopefully come up with and start a quilt for my grandson who made said “mama I need a new quilt the one you made is too small now”. Fingers crossed that life doesn’t get in the way.

Jane Quilter 10-06-2018 04:18 AM

I'll be making marching on making one or two flamingos for my grandbaby's quilt. (each bird has 75 pieces to individually cut and sew.)

I am longarming a quilt of fussy cut Asian fabric circles appliqued to square. The quilt is destined for a Buddhist teacher so I have chosen lotus blossoms, Ginkgo leaves and Asian Style clouds.

Very cool quilting patterns feline fanatic!

Probably won't get time to do much this weekend except for fusing a couple more t-shirts that my cousin wanted added to her t-shirt quilt. But, I'm having fun checking in to see what everyone else is doing!

I sewed some blocks together today, so VQW has helped motivate me. Thanks for hosting it!

donac 10-06-2018 02:47 PM

I am busy knitting a baby blanket for my soon to be born granddaughter but I did buy fabric for a quilt for her. The shower is in 2 weeks I have so much to do

happylab 10-06-2018 03:08 PM

Today I made my BOM Block. I also cut and sewed together the binding strips for the 9-patch. I hope to get her finished tonight after dinner.

ff, such lovel quilting. I’m sure the teacher will love it as well.

geevee 10-06-2018 03:23 PM

I guess I'm in this one, I just started another handbag, the front and back have a granny square motif that I sewed using strip sets (once I spent a day working out the pattern and math :p), I'll snap a pic later this evening or tomorrow. Love seeing everyone's works in progress!

QuiltingVagabond, your quilts are beautiful and you certainly deserve your wins! Congratulations!!

cashs_mom 10-06-2018 06:45 PM

I love that quilt FelineFanatic and your quilting is setting it off really nicely.

I didn't get off to a very good start. I got upstairs and put the Juki in the new Ezisew table. The panel that holds the machine was too low. I checked and I put it together right. Hmmmmm. . . Then it dawned on me that there were 2 sets of hangers with no explanation of which ones to use. They looked just the same so I just used one set. I got the other set out and sure enough they were about 1/2 inch shorter and that was about how much too low the machine was when it was in the table. Sooooooo . . . I took the table apart, put the shorter hangers in, put it back together turned it over and sat it on the legs, put the Juki in the it was just right!

Then I decided to boot the Bernina up and use it to FMQ my wall hanging. Bernina won't boot up. Turned it off, turned it back on. All I could get was a back background with some yellow and red lines. Dang. My Bernina is my go to machine for garment construction and I really don't want to buy a new one now. I shut it down and go get some laundry. Fold laundry, do a bit of work on my hexies and decide to try it again. It booted up! I did some FMQ practice with some random thread I had around. Then I put the Invisafil on it and had to adjust the tension (which I figured I would). I finally got it adjusted, did some FMQ practice and realized I didn't have enough thread to do the project.

At that point, since things hadn't been going really well, I just worked on hexies for a couple hours until my husband came home. Hopefully, tomorrow I can get some work done on FMQ'ing the string quilt. Wish me luck!
